Chocolatey delicious bridesmaid dresses

Awakely"I’m in London and my bridesmaid is in Edinburgh and we’re really struggling
with finding her an outfit. The basic issue is trying to find a simple and elegant, chocolate brown,
full-length evening dress on the high street/off the peg that would be
suitable for a bridesmaid. She is a UK 14/16 and is quite busty, so something with a little support
would be good. Do you have any suggestions?"

I love a challenge (and the opportunity to browse shops online and call it work) so I went in search of some great dresses that will suit your bridesmaid. I hope she realises how lucky she is to have a friend who won’t dress her up in some nasty upholstery cast-off! It did prove to be quite a challenge because even though the dress is big this year, being able to find one that matched all your requirements was tough so I’ve found a variety of different shades and cuts…

I’ve picked this dress it because it is a great shape although I suspect the cappucino shade may be paler than what you are looking for. The dress is made from a heavy duchesse satin – great for bridesmaid dresses – but has pretty lace straps. The bust is slightly ruched, it skims the hips nicely and falls to the ankle. £60 kaleidoscope

This deep chocolate gown is a bit more dramatic and perfect for dancing the night away. It has one shoulder but is fairly high cut so your bridesmaid can easily fit a strapless bra underneath for support. It’s also cut on the bias with an assymetrical hem. Made from silk, it will keep her cool on a hot summers day. £85 Principles at Freemans

I think this georgette dress by Elements Amanda Wakely is a great find. The V-neckline is great for larger busts because it shows cleavage off without looking tacky. The high ribbon band is very now and has a slimming effect as the skirt skims over the tummy area and falls into a gorgeous fishtail hem. And it’s only £89

I’ve added this uber cute knee length dress just to show that chocolatey brown dresses work in this cut (and for our US readers). It’s made from Italian cotton which has a great crisp feel that makes it a great evening cocktail dress. The square neckline and sturdy straps will provide good support and the skirt would look great twirling whilst she dances. ‘Juliette’ $250 at JCrew

This deep chocolate satin dress also falls just below the knee but is overlaid with lace. The cut really suits curvy girls – the cross over V-neck keeps large chests looking classy whislt the side ruching and satin sash help create an hourglass figure. £65 at Kaleidoscope

The last dress is a mocha chiffon dress by Principles at Debenhams. It works on the same principles as the dress above – the high neckline and shoulders means a bra can be worn with ease whilst the sash helps create that hourglass figure. The pleats of the skirt are incredibly pretty and it would work well with all skin tones. £65 at Debenhams

What colour shoes would go with a chocolate brown bridesmaid’s dress? My fiance’s bridesmaids are having a very similar dress (from Monsoon, £135 in case you need any more ideas) but we’re struggling to find shoes that match.

  • Hi Mike,
If you take a look in the shoe section you can find some coffee coloured shoes there (you may have to scroll down a bit).
You could also try taking a look at for some styles there.

Love the above mocha chiffon dress. I’m getting married this fall and my bridesmaid are all different sizes. I can not fins this dress at the above location any longer. If anyone can tell me where I can shop for them that would be great.
