Wedding traditions – Lucky Sixpence

By admin on August 4th, 2006 3 comments

Silver_sixpenceThere are many wedding themed rhymes but this is one line I hadn’t heard until recently from this popular verse – Something old/ Something new/ Something borrowed/ Something Blue/ and a lucky sixpence in her shoe

A lucky sixpence was often found somewhere in the bridal garb and the line appears to have dissapeared when sixpences were no longer made from silver. The Lucky Sixpence Company have a variety of styles that you can incorporate ito your outfit should you wish  to follow the tradition including single coins from 1947-1967 from £2.99

You can also find quite a lot of these coins (genuine) on eBay. I picked up one for my sister and one for myself for about £1.50 each. We’re both getting married next year.

  • Thanks for the tip Erin. Ebay is great for finding things like that!

  • I’ve heard that saying as “..and a penny in your shoe”
