Over the last few years, a new wedding trend has started to emerge. It’s the Best Man Team – quite literally, a team of best men who assist the groom on the wedding day, in much the same way as the team of bridesmaids traditionally help the bride. Well, if we’re allowed more than one attendant, why shouldn’t the groom have more than one too?
We almost had a best man team ourselves: my fiance wanted both his
brother and his best friend to do the job, and then there was that friend who was so good to us when he was ill… He went through the same
kind of dilemma that many brides do, when they don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, and can’t quite decide who should get the "job", and it took a long, long time for him to come to a decision about who to ask.
In the end, he decided to just have one best man (his brother) rather than a best man "team". I’m only having a flower girl and page boy (my fiance’s niece and nephew), and also have a very small family to his cast of thousands. If he’d had a Best Man Team, the wedding would have felt very unbalanced to me, with my fiance surrounded by attendants and family members, and me with just my dad.
All of that said, it does seem unfair that the bride is traditionally married with a host of attendants while the groom has only one. What do you think? Will you be having a best man team, or are you settling for just one?
