At most of the weddings I’ve been to, the newly-married couple have shuffled around in embarrassed fashion to their first dance. Some receptions, however, couldn’t be more different, with bride and groom whirling around the dance floor like something out of Strictly Come Dancing. These are the weddings of the uber-prepared bride: the one who insists on taking dance lessons with her betrothed so that the first dance can look as professional as possible, and actually, this kind of thing seems to be becoming fairly popular – I know quite a few brides to be who’ve added "book dance lessons" to their "to do" list in advance of the big day.
Now, I have to confess that my fiance and I are likely to count ourselves amongst the shufflers, as the idea of putting on a show for our guests seems slightly strange to me, being the shy, retiring type that I am. In fact, I’d probably be happy to skip the first dance altogether, had we not spent such a long time picking the song we’ll be using for it. (The Beatles – ‘In My Life’, in case you’re wondering.) Will you be having a first dance? And if so, are you getting in some practise beforehand?
