During my search for Iconic Brides I have come across several deserving women I’d like to have featured, but either I couldn’t gather enough information together about their wedding, or they just didn’t quite make the shortlist.
So I thought I’d post a little montage of their images as brides, just to let you see how utterly fabulous they look, plus a little bit about each marriage.
Firstly we have Lauren Bacall at her wedding to screen legend Humphrey Bogart on 21st May 1945. She was only 20 and he was 45. They remained married until Bogart’s death in 1957. She later married actor Jason Robards, but his alcoholism meant their union only lasted eight years.
Secondly, a very innocent looking Norma Jeane Baker at her wedding to her 21 year old neighbour Jim Dougherty on 19th June 1942. they were very much in love and lived happily together for two years until Jim was posted off to the South Pacific as a marine in 1944. Norma Jeane started to make it big as a model when she was discovered by a photographer whilst working in a munitions factory, and in 1946 she divorced Jim and became sex goddess Marilyn Monroe. She married twice more before her untimely death in 1962.
Third bride is Elizabeth Taylor at her wedding to Conrad ‘Nicky’ Hilton Jr. (one of Paris Hilton’s relations via the hotel business!) on 6th May 1950. Their wedding only lasted eight months and we all know how many times Ms. Taylor went on to marry after that!
Last, but not least is Queen Elizabeth. It was a toss up between her and her sister Margaret, for Iconic Bride #3 but Maggie won in the end as she’s just much more rock’n’roll in my opinion! Princess Elizabeth married Prince Philippos of Greece on 20th November 1947 at Westminster Abbey. They are second cousins twice removed (eek!). The Queen Mum was reported to be less than pleased with her daughter’s choice of husband, as he was Greek Orthodox and had no money. Seems the two were a good match though, as they’re still going strong. Despite Philip’s numerous faux pas.
Tune in next week to see who will be our next Iconic Bride.
