I would love nothing more than to have pop princess Kylie Minogue here as an iconic bride in her own right, but until she finds a man worthy of her affections (not Olivier Martinez it appears!) we will have to settle for her former alter ego Charlene Mitchell from Aussie TV show Neighbours back in the ’80s instead.
The wedding between her and on-screen boyfriend Scott Robinson (played by Jason Donovan) on 1st July 1987 was watched by millions worldwide. Who can forget the moment the church door opened to reveal the vision in white, on the arm of her big brother Henry?!
The dress she wore was white chantilly and was designed by the Neighbours’ wardrobe department, after they failed to find anything ‘Cinderella’ enough in the stores. It was very ’80s with a high lace collar, puffed sleeves and a huge skirt. She wore a veil with her signature blonde curls piled high underneath.
The wedding took place on location at the Holy Trinity Church in Doncaster, Victoria. Charlene had two bridesmaids, best friend Jane (who could forget those eyebrows) and sister Lucy, who wore peach dresses. Scott’s best man was the delightful Mike (Guy Pearce). It was one of the only episodes to feature the entire cast at one time. The bride walked down the aisle to ‘Suddenly’ a power ballad by Angry Anderson, which later went on to become a huge hit in the UK. The reception was held back at the Robinson’s house on Ramsey Street.
Soap weddings are always a huge hit with fans, and the wedding of Charlene and Scott will remain one of the most famous, not least because of the chemistry between the actors, on and off screen.
