I was inspired by the couple who chose to go the whole hog and take dance lessons and choreograph an original piece for their wedding, so this week I decided to recommend a few classic standards which would lend themselves very well to the Fred and Ginger treatment.
You Do Something to Me (Cole Porter) Has been sung by Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald and more recently KD Lang and Sinead O’Connor.
Fly Me to the Moon (Bart Howard) The most famous: Old blue eyes, Frank Sinatra himself, but this has been sung by hundreds (including me) – check out Astrud Gilberto , Ella F, Nat King Cole.
The Way You Look Tonight (Jerome Kern) OK, a reminder of ‘My Best Friends Wedding’, but a great song! Again, Frank Sinatra sang it, but also Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday.
My Funny Valentine (Richard Rodgers) Sarah Vaughan does a beautiful version of this, or try Carly Simon or Rufus Wainwrights versions for something a bit more contemporary.
Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love (Cole Porter) I think this would be a cheeky little number to shimmy round the floor to! Try Bing Crosby’s version, Ella Fitzgerald (again!), or maybe even Alanis Morrisette…
In general, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin are all composers to look up for this type of classic song. All of these would be easy enough for any half-decent wedding band to do a version of for you too, if you prefer live music.
