Details don’t have to be all about what your eye immediately sees. Look down and you’ll notice hemlines are getting a makeover and becoming very alluring indeed. Not content with matter-of-fact column dresses and classic A-lines, these designers have sought to create dresses that wow right down to the ground.

Amy Kuschel debuted this strappy ruched style with a cloud of tulle hem, left. Vera Wang, right, gives us her take on the mermaid gown with a layered style and a stiff hem. The cabbage rose accent on the shoulder features in a number of Wang’s styles so look out for big blooms next year too.

Vertical pleats are worked into the hem of this fitted gown at Kenneth Pool, left. Right, Carmela Sutera works with layers to create a soft, feminine look with Chantilly lace and organza.
