Chinese couples jumped at the chance to be married on the most auspicious date 8/8/08 which coincided with the Olympic Games. Around 314,224 couples married, setting a record as the highest number of weddings since communist China was created in 1949. Some registry offices stayed open round the clock to perform the marriages. The date was considered especially lucky as ‘eight’ sounds similar to the word for wealth.
