I was chatting with Dave the Shoe Guy for a fashion story this week, and he told me an adorable story about how he proposed to his wife – and met Manolo Blahnik along the way – I just had to share here.
Dave and his wife-to-be met and started dating while working in the shoe department at Nordstrom. One Valentine’s Day as he was getting ready to ask her to marry him, Manolo Blahnik, Dave’s favorite shoe designer, came out with a sparkly silver sandal that was $2,000 with only 36 made in the entire world.
“I thought I was going to get those shoes for her as an engagement present, I put her ring in the travel bag and I said happy Valentine’s Day,” Dave said. “She opened up the box and saw the shoes first and said these are the most beautiful shoes I’ve ever seen. And I said she should see what’s in the bag!”
Naturally, his wife said yes. About the same time, Dave won a trip to London to meet Manolo Blahnik for having sold the most Manolos of anyone in the country.
“I said Manolo, thanks so much for making those shoes and I told him my story,” he said. “And he’s a really sensitive guy and he started tearing up on me and he asked if I’d mind if he signed her shoes.”
Well, when he got home with the signed shoes, his wife burst into tears. Now she felt like she couldn’t wear them for fear of the signature rubbing off!
“Well, Manolo made two size 7-1/2 pairs of those sandals in the whole world,” Dave said. “And now we own both of them.”
What a cute proposal story! Be sure to help Dave answer the question “What is it with ladies and shoes?” at his Web site.
