Remember where you were when your husband-to-be got down on one knee? If it was somewhere overseas rather than in your flat in East London you are not alone. Research by travelmatch.co.uk reveals that Brits are following in the footsteps of celebs like Kate Moss and Lily Allen – hey even Prince William and Catherine Middleton – by getting engaged abroad. Four out of every ten couples have apparently said ‘yes’ to marriage proposals while on holiday.
Perhaps inspired by celebrities, the study also found that 53% of men compete against their peers for the ultimate engagement, which adds to the desire to propose in increasingly impressive locations. So is it all a game?
A healthy dose of competition has never harmed anyone, and it turns out that 2/3 of the men asked say that popping the question was the most nerve wracking thing they have ever done.
However, this added focus on making the engagement moment a memorable event is also pushing up the total cost for weddings. The average holiday engagement adds more than a quarter to the overall marriage costs, which means that the average wedding teamed with a holiday engagement now totals to just over £20,000.
Here at Bridalwave we are always discussing the figures of getting married (both how to fit into that dress before the big day and financially speaking). While some of us would rather splurge on the engagement ring – you will be wearing this every day after all – than a fancy holiday, others do think the logistics of the engagement sets the scene for what is to come.
What do you think Bridalwave readers? Should getting engaged be as lavish as the wedding itself?
