Review: Purifyne cleansing programme

Comments (0)

Juice.jpg

Purifyne.JPG
Last year I underwent a detox and cleansing diet for our fashion site ShinyStyle, to see if it would work for those post Christmas weight shifts, and I thought I'd tell you brides about my experiences, to help you decide if doing a detox before the big day to lose weight is the way to go.

Purifyne is said to improve the physical state of your body and helps to clarify your mind and prices range from £79.00 for a one day programme to £475 for a 14-day programme.

It's not cheap and at first glance the package, which consists of various juices delivered straight to your door, vitamins and an enema kit (I won't put you off your breakfast/lunch, so click here to find out more) looks a little bit like one which, would be more suited in the fridge of a wag or popstar, but then again so does the service.

I met up with the owner, who asked me a range of medical and lifestyle questions to determine what package would suit me. On the first delivery of juices she will also come to you a make you feel comfortable as well as call and text you throughout the programme to make sure you're ok.

It was decided I would have 4 bottles of juice a day alongside a range of supplements.
So instead of gorging on my usual fry ups for the week I was drinking juice and herbal teas, topped up with various vitamins.

In my week long trial I experienced everything from starvation, to mood swings and even sweaty armpits (these are all symptoms of the detox as your body begins to cleanse itself.) However, with the bad came the good and by day three I was alot more alert, the spots, which had come as part of the programme had disappeared, and my stomach was surprisingly flatter. I was also alot calmer.

However the best bit about this programme was how my attitude to food had changed.
I was worried that once I started eating again my weight would go back up and the lethargy would return, but Purifyne claims this is not the case as your mind and attitude changes meaning you'll eat healthier. This is because you have done so much good for your body that you hardly want to return to your old habits and instead want to improve your diet and lifestyle to maintain that feeling of being much healthier than before. It's also because your liver has broken down the fact from all the old foods meaning it'll now be able to process your food more efficiently.

So would I recommend this detox to brides? If you want bright eyes, a clear complexion and to look slightly slimmer for your big day then yes. It may also help with pre wedding stress. However, if you're a bride constantly on the go, then juices may just not be enough to keep all that energy up, especially for the first four days.

1920s-makeup

Yesterday we gave you some hints and tips on how to plan a 1920s themed wedding and gave you a gallery with accessory and bridesmaid ideas. So what better way to continue the theme with a list of hints and tips on how to create that 1920s flapper style make-up for your big day.

Flapper look tip one.
The 1920s make-up look for this era was pale skin complimented by bold lips and eyes.
To begin find a foundation, which gives you creamy complexion with good coverage. You may not find this in normal retailers so we suggest you visit a theatre supply or fancy dress store to get the right look. If you are using a make-up artist for the big day she may be able to source it for you too. As this make-up is thicker than normal foundations apply it thinly so your skin can breathe.

Flapper look tip 2
The flapper look is all about bold eyes and brows so highlight these by using an eyebrow pencil, which is darker than your actual colour. You may also want to visit a beauticians to get your brows shaped into the very thin style the flappers traditionally had.

Flapper look tip 3
You'll need to go back to black on your eyes but before you start with the shadow and eyeliner, you'll need to smooth some primer onto your eyelids to make sure the shadow stays. Take a dark grey eyeshadow and smudge across the eyelid, making sure to blend it in over the brow bone. Once this is done grab your eye pencil and apply on both the top and bottom of the lashes. Add a thick dose of mascara for the ultimate lash look.

Flapper look tip 4
Dark eyes and pale skin were complimented with red lips and cheeks in the 1920s. For the rosy look opt for a cream blush or cheek stain (Body Shop does a good one here). And spread across the apple of your cheek. Add a bright pink lipstick or gloss to finish.

Bridal make up.jpg

Picture the scene; you've had your make up professionally done, but the tears at the ceremony coupled with the numerous kisses you've received from relatives and a little bit of bridal nervous sweating has caused it to come off. You've still got the wedding photos to go, and your make up artist has gone for the day.

We know you're not going to want to carry around huge amounts of make-up on your big day so we spoke to Barry M Cosmetics Celebrity Make-up Artist Amy Sachon to bring you a list of wedding make-up bag must haves to carry in your bag or to give to your maid of honour to look after.

Make-up must have one: Lip gloss.
Lip gloss is a much subtler look and topping it up throughout the day won't leave you with that lip stain some lipsticks can give if they are over applied. "I always keep a handy Barry M Cosmetics Coconut Clear Lip Gloss (RRP £4.25) in my handbag to leave lips looking healthy and hydrated." says Amy.

Make-up must have two: Face Powder
If you've got oily skin or worried about your foundation becoming shiny on a night or day out then face powder is the perfect remedy. "Throughout the day your face goes through various temperature changes so I always dab on some face powder to keep skin looking flawless at all times," says Amy.

Make-up must have three: Mascara

For us, this is the ultimate weapon in make-up but it's even more important on your wedding day when tears of happiness beat even the strongest of waterproof mascaras. Amy says it's also a perfect way to brighten the eyes and leave lashes looking longer and fuller.

Make-up must have four: Cover up
Cover up is definitely a miracle product and we're not sure what we'd do without it, especially on those days where the spots decide to come out and play. Amy says it's also "good for disguising bags under the eyes and general puffiness."

How to choose your wedding day hairstyle

Comments (0)

Hair bride.jpg

Wedding hair is something many brides have a problem with. Some think they have to go down the traditional route of having their hair up, while others struggle to find a style to suit their dress and tiara. We've therefore put together some simple tips to help you find that bridal hairstyle.

Tip One- Look at your dress
If you don't know what hairstyle you want then maybe you should let your wedding dress and venue decide. If you're going for a backless or halterneck style dress then an updo is perfect for showing off that detail. However if you've chosen something more traditional such as a ball gown frock or princess dress and are getting married in a stately home then consider ringlets to tie in with the theme. Long, flowing waves are also perfect for a beach wedding.

Tip Two- Know your hairdresser.
There are many stylists that specialise in wedding hair but you have to feel comfortable with them. This is because communication and not being afraid to say what you like and dislike is very important. If your unsure about who to go for speak to your wedding photographer, who will have his own contacts to suit each venue or get recommendations from friends and family.

Tip Three - Let your hair grow
You should ideally decide what hairstyle you want at least 6 months before your wedding. Scour magazines and websites to find styles you like. This should give you enough time to grow your hair (it grows about half an inch a month) if you want an updo but have a short style.

Tip Four- Be greedy
If you still can't decide what style you want then consider having two. Show off one style during your ceremony (perhaps a formal updo), then another, more relaxed look (think loose, cascading curls) for your reception.

Tip Five - Be comfortable
Many people will give you the same advice as we have but at the end of the day its down to you. Don't go for a hairstyle just because you feel you have to and if you wear your hair loose everyday because you hate it up, then don't feel pressured to have an updo at your wedding. After all, that hairstyle will remain in the wedding pictures for the rest of your life.

How to lose weight properly for your wedding day

Comments (0)

Fit bride.jpgMany brides to be will want to lose weight for their wedding day, and many will hit the gym or embark on diets to ensure they fit perfectly into their wedding dress.
However, there are some myths going around for losing weight and toning up so we spoke to Jenny Evans, Stress/Exercise Physiologist & Founder of PowerHouse Performance Coaching to find out how brides can go about toning up and loosing weight the proper way.

Myth 1: Longer workouts at a lower intensity burn more fat.
Jenny says short and intense interval training sessions can improve whole body fat oxidation by 36% and may offer greater benefits than lengthy bouts of steady-state exercise. Interval training allows you to get more work done in the same amount of time because you can work at greater intensity levels than if you were doing steady state training. Your overall production (calories burned) will be greater despite the frequent breaks because you are able to work at a higher intensity.

Interval training also improves your level of fitness very quickly, typically in a matter of just a few weeks, and this improvement in fitness allows you to perform more work and burn more calories during an exercise session.

Myth 2: I should work out on an empty stomach do my body will burn fat
Jenny says: You must put glucose (food) in the system before you exercise. If you are exercising with no glucose in the system, it sends your body into Emergency Mode. Emergency Mode = hold on to body fat for as long as possible because it is valuable energy and will be necessary to survive. Instead of fat, your body will break down muscle tissue and use that as energy. It does this for two major reasons:

1) Muscle is metabolically active tissue. For this reason it's viewed as costly when there is not enough energy coming in. Your body is "doing you a favor" by getting rid of really needy, high maintenance cells. Emergency Mode is all about energy conservation: Get rid of muscle, hold on to fat.

2) Losing muscle mass slows down your metabolism, which conserves energy. This is your body's goal when you are in Emergency Mode.

If you are working out - or even physically active - and there is no glucose in the system, your primary fuel source is muscle, not fat. Get your body out of Emergency Mode by making sure to keep adequate glucose in the system by eating several small meals and snacks throughout the day.

Myth 3: If I don't have at least 30 minutes to exercise I should just skip it because I won't get any benefit.

Science has shown that you do not have to do long, continuous workouts to get benefit. Studies have taken two groups of exercisers and divided them in to '30 minutes of continuous exercise done in one session' and '30 minutes done in 3 bouts of 10 minutes each, spread throughout the day'. Guess which group got more benefit? The second group that spread out their three 10 minutes sessions reaped more benefit, and here's why: Every time you exercise, your metabolism increases. When you finish exercising, it takes a while for your metabolism to slow back down. This means free extra calories being burned! I like to think of this as the "Afterburner Effect". The group that did 30 consecutive minutes got only one "afterburner effect", whereas the second group got three!

Another benefit to splitting up your workouts is that it may be more do-able from a time management perspective. Finding a big block of time can be very challenging, but finding 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes mid-day and 10 minutes in the evening definitely has possibilities. Instead of bagging a workout because you don't have 45 minutes or an hour, see how much you can accumulate throughout the day or week.

Myth 4: Working my abs all the time will get me a six-pack stomach
Physical activity - including resistance training - will help reduce body fat, but not specifically or exclusively in the isolated muscle group being worked. Current theory shows that a reduction in calorie intake coupled with exercise results in fat reduction throughout the entire body, not in localized spots. You cannot "spot reduce" fat on specific areas of the body. Body fat decreases in an all over body sense - your body genetically decides where the fat goes to or comes from first and unfortunately you can't control it. Reducing body fat is best accomplished through a combination of cardiovascular activity, resistance training, and a healthy diet.

Jemma Kidd Make-Up Launch

We've said before that wedding day make-up can make or break an outfit, leading to photos you would sooner destroy than frame for your mantle.

And don't just take our word for it, after all how many episodes of Don't Tell the Bride have shown the bride panicking over her make over?

While some of you may opt to visit a professional make-up artist, others will prefer to stick to their original looks. For the latter we've got some top tips for you from Jemma Kidd, world famous makeup artist and recent bride, who has provided some simple solutions to ensure obtaining the perfect look is a piece of cake.

Jemma's tip one. Key Considerations
Every woman wants to be beautiful on her wedding day, both in person and in the photos. As result, it is critical to look stunning but still natural and like yourself - you don't want to look dated in a few years.

Jemma's tip two. Flawless Foundation
The key to successful long-lasting makeup is to spend time preparing the skin in advance and creating a flawless base. Beware of powder (it can age you) or foundation in the wrong shade (it will look flat and grey in photos). Stick to mineral foundations that give a soft natural finish and will last through the ceremony and reception. Alternatively, use a liquid or cream foundation and set with a fine dusting of light-reflecting translucent powder.

Jemma's tip three: Blushing Bride
To obtain a dewy finish, be sure to moisturize thoroughly and let the moisturizer sink in completely before putting on any makeup. Use a touch of pinky-cream illuminating cream to highlight the top of the cheekbones. Then, dust the central cross of the face with translucent powder. Finally, for a natural flush, apply a blend of soft peach and sandy beige powder blush to the apples of the cheeks and blend along the cheekbones.

Jemma's tip four: Enchanting Eyes
A neutral palette works well with any skin tone and is the most straightforward option for beautiful and foolproof wedding make up - now is not the time to be experimenting with glitter and bold colored liners! First pat a little concealer over the eyelids to neutralize any redness. Draw a fine line of dark brown eye pencil around the eyes, keeping to the roots of the lashes. Draw along the inner rim of the eyes with a flesh-toned eye pencil for a brightening effect. Apply a wash of cream shadow over the entire lid up to the browbone. Add a touch of darker mocha eyeshadow at the outer corner of the eye, blending it well into the socket crease. Blend a little shimmering beige eyeshadow over the lower part of the lid. Curl the lashes and apply water resistant lengthening dark brown mascara that will stay put through any tears shed during the ceremony.

Jemma's tip five: Loveable Lips
Outline the lips with a neutral pinky-beige pencil and fill in the whole lip area. Then use a sheer lipstick or non-sticky soft rose lipgloss. Be sure to give an extra lipstick or gloss to your maid of honor as all of the kissing wears the color quickly off. Finish with a smile as you head down the aisle.

Winter Wedding must have: Soft Lips lip balm

Comments (0)

SoftlipsVanilla.jpgWe know our next winter product won't just appeal to brides, but we think it's definitely a bridal must have, after all noone wants to kiss their groom with dry chapped lips.

Wedding stress plus the effects of the winter weather and central heating can play havoc with your lips making them dry and chapped.

We know our next winter product won't just appeal to brides, but we think it's definitely a bridal must have, after all luscious soft lips when that all important "you may kiss the bride" phrase comes, are definitely needed.

Softlips has launched a luxury lip balm, which it claims will ensure your lips are soft, smooth and kissable on your big day. It's non-greasy and it can be worn on its own or under your favourite lipstick or gloss. And the £1.79 price tag won't break the bridal budget either.

Softlips is available from Boots and Superdrug stores now.

makeup.jpgSo you've got the dress, the flowers and the groom (we hope he was first on your list) but there's still the niggling worry about the make-up.

We know that every bride wants to look nothing short of fabulous on her big day, and finding the right make-up artist can be hard. But fear not as we think we may have found someone who can help

International make-up artist Kate Hughes, who has worked with Kate Winslet and Heidi Klum has launched It's All About You, a bespoke make-up service for brides.

The company provide professional make-up artists, who can travel to any location across the UK, and create gorgeous wedding looks and hairstyles. Prices start from £100.

Thumbnail image for Hair up.jpgEvery girl wants to glow on their big day, whether it's in a bright white dazzling dress or a subtle facial glow. If you're the kind that wants to go for the latter then Confetti has come up with a range of tips to help you achieve this. It's put together a guide giving brides advice from bronzing to zapping spots and cold sores. There are so many tips, that we can't share them all but we've picked out, what we hope are the best ones, to help you out on your special day.

Get the Bridal Glow
Brides that want to look tanned on their day are given three pieces of advice: Confetti tells you to spend some time on a sun bed (we're not sure we agree with this), invest in a self-tanning formula or go subtle with bronzing powder. It says self tanners are a safe and reliable way to get that golden glow. There are a number of them available, so you might want to test out a few. Unless you're an experienced user, you might want to leave the application to an expert. Most spas have a self-tanning treatment where they'll ensure you are suitably exfoliated, buffed and moisturised to avoid the streaky look.
If you want that lightly sun-kissed look, a bronzing powder is the way to go. Apply it where you'd naturally be browned by the sun -- across your cheekbones, nose and brow. Avoid frosted bronzers, as they can look artificial. Stick to matte formulas and the golden girl look is yours.

Zap the spot
And brides prone to spot can also keep them at bay by cleansing and moisturizing their skin morning and night. Also pay attention to your diet. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables, wholegrain foods such as brown rice and pasta and live natural yoghurt, and try to drink between eight to ten glasses of water per day. When you do get a break out avoid handling, squeezing or picking spots at all costs as this will help to prevent any cross-infection.

Bag up the eyebags

Finally those of us who suffer from the dreaded bags under our eyes are advised to, well bag them up, with a simple tapping massage. With your middle finger, tap the under-eye area lightly but swiftly, moving from the inner corner to the outer corner of your eye and back again. Start as soon as you can: just a minute a day can bring noticeable results.
We have to say we love these little tips from the one stop wedding shop, and we'll be trying out these ourselves too.

tt.jpgIt's a bit of a vicious circle for brides wanting to look tanned on their wedding day, especially those getting married in the winter.

You want a glowing tan, but you can't get away because of the planning, and because your honeymoon is just around the corner (unless of course your blessed with being able to afford two holidays).

So what do you do? Yes you can visit a sun bed but they are bad for you. Or, we could do what every celebrity has been doing and fake it.

Tantruth has been designed to give your body an all over colour in the quickest, easiest, least stressful way. Tantruth's Application Mit is also claimed to have silk satin extracts for an all over, streak free tan.

Now we know fake tan can smell, but Tantruth duo self tanning agents are also claimed to give you a light fresh summer fragrance.

We also love these kit bags, which are a bargain for £23.50 and include a self Tan Lotion with Colour Guide, Tantruth True Smoothing Scrub and Tantruth Bronzing Gel for Body and Face.

We'll be reviewing this product in the near future so we'll let you know how streaky and smelly it actually is.
