How to plan your own Downton Abbey wedding

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on September 19th, 2012

We have finally managed to catch up on the latest episode of Downton Abbey, the hit TV series that follows the Crawley family and their servants as they go through romance, ambition, desire, shocks and heartbreak.

As those who follow the show knew, the third series would start with the planning of the wedding of Lady Mary Crawley and Matthew Crawley (apparently they’re related way down the line), who after an on-off romance in the previous seasons would finally get their fairytale wedding.

As viewers finally got to see Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) walk down the aisle to meet her husband-to-be, played by Dan Stevens, all we could think of: how could you have a Downton Abbey wedding yourself?

The venue

If you’re after a true Downton Abbey wedding this is your first port of call. The home of the Crawley’s is actually the sumptuous Highclere Castle, which is within easy reach of London, Bristol and Southampton. The Castle is licenced to hold civil ceremonies and will provide a out-of-this-world backdrop to your wedding photographs.

Whether you’re after an intimate wedding or a celebration extravaganza, the wedding co-ordinators are on hand to help you plan your perfect day, right through from ceremony to reception.

The only thing that could cast at shadow over your 1920’s style wedding location is the cost.. The venue fee ranges from £12,000 to £15,000 (+VAT) depending on season. But that’s worth it for the ultimate Downton wedding, right?!

 The wedding dress

Lady Mary looked every part the 1920’s bride as she came down the stairs, revealing her wedding gown to her father – and the world. As was the norm in this era, she wore a simple ivory column dress, with a satin sash drawing in below the waist and sheer, long sleeves. The look was completed with a jewelled headband and a cathedral length veil. Gorgeous!

There are a lot of wedding designers who specialise in this style of gowns, but we’d recommend taking a look at The Vintage Wedding Dress Company or Jenny Packham.

The hair and make-up

While Mary sported a rather demure look, for roaring twenties hairstyles think waves and Hollywood Glamour- and a feather or two – or a shiny bejewelled headband. When it comes to make-up it is all about bold lips and dramatic eyes . Take your time to research hair and make-up artists in your area to ensure you find the right person for the job. And look to celebsville for inspiration. More than one beauty has graced the red carpet in a 20’s style.

The groom’s attire

Your husband-to-be needs a morning suit with a matching waistcoat, no doubt about that. Add a top hat to the look for the ultimate 1920’s groom.

The guests

Now this is where it gets tricky. For the perfect replica of the Downton Abbey wedding, you’d need an eccentric American grandmother, a quirky and traditional English grandmother, a sister who married the chauffeur and lots – and we mean LOTS – of servants. Oh and a healthy dose of drama just before the ceremony…

The best solution: simply invite everyone dear to you and your future husband, and it will be a blast!

There you have it, the basic elements of planning your very own Downton Abbey wedding.

Art deco inspired bridal jewellery by Amanda Field

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on April 11th, 2012

You had me at art deco. As one of my favourite eras (although the 50’s are pretty amazing too), any art deco inspired jewellery and gowns will grab my attention. The glamour and elegance of the 20’s and 30’s are definitely present in Amanda Field’s new Eternity Collection.

Each piece has been created with a particular attention to detail, featuring specially selected gems and material:

“The ancient Greeks believed pearls to be Aphrodite’s tears of joy and pearls, symbolic of innocence and purity, and pearls are a stunning feature of the bridal headpieces. Quartz, a stone of protection and care, complements pearls beautifully, and the subtle sparkle offered by the gem quality faceted pieces evokes Art Deco to perfection.”

A selection of jewellery, headpieces, hats, fascinators and headbands, there is something in this collection for both the bride, bridesmaids and wedding guests.

Vintage wonderland with Sabina Motasem Bride and Eltham Palace

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on January 9th, 2012

I do love when a bit of Art Deco lands in my inbox. This time it came from bridal designer Sabina Motasem Bride who has teamed up with one of London’s most sought after wedding venue, Eltham Palace, Greenwich – one of the UK’s finest examples of Art Deco style. The gorgeous venue is the backdrop of the labels’ new collection, which features vintage inspired wedding gowns for the modern bride who has a penchant for the eras past.

The new collection draws inspiration from the style and glamour of iconic performers at the Folies Bergeres in 1900s- 1930s Paris. Think slinky, understated dresses that complement the opulent and decadent Art Deco interior perfectly.

I’ll let you be the judge of the prettiest dress of them all, but these are gorgeous.

Grecian and Swinging 20s with Yolan Cris’ The Three Graces wedding dress collection

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on October 4th, 2011

I can’t help but to think of America’s 1920’s Flapper girls when looking at Yolan Cris’ Le Tre Grazie – The Three Graces. With names like Charleston and Mississippi as well as other well-known American cities I think I’d be excused. But it is the elegant, luxurious and somewhat ethereal look with straight and tight cuts that really makes me think of Art Deco and the Swinging 20s.

But for Le Tre Grazie, the third of four 2012 wedding dress collections, Yolan Cris has been inspired by the three Graces of Greek and Roman mythology: the goddesses of joy, charm and beauty. Draped in gorgeous lines reminiscent of Grecian and Roman dresses any bride would look like she’s stepped out of a Rubens painting. With a sensual designs and delicate fabrics, embellished with feathers and guipure and jewels you will feel like a goddess on your wedding day.
