Flat shoes for the taller bride

By Andrea Petrou on August 18th, 2009

Now we touched on shoes for the taller bride yesterday and promised that we would get together a gallery of flat, yet elegant bridal shoes. So here it is.

These will not only make sure the taller ladies amongst us don’t tower their groom and guests but are also a perfect alternative to brides that don’t want to be dancing in high heels all night.

I have seen many brides have to take off their shoes towards the end of the night due to painful feet, so in fact flats may turn out to be a cheaper and better option in the long run. At least they’ll stay on.

Ballet style shoes for taller brides

By Andrea Petrou on August 17th, 2009

mia.jpg

Taller than average brides that don’t want to tower over their grooms on the big day, think Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman style, will love Rachel Simpson’s new wedding shoe design.

The footwear designer has added a ballet style shoe to her collection, especially for the taller ladies amongst us (keep reading Bridalwave this week for our top ten flat wedding shoes).

Unlike a standard flat, these shoes are gorgeous, covered in ivory satin and scattered with crystals. However, we’d be more than happy to wear these for our day, it would save having to take off the heels after too much dancing and champagne.

The shoes cost £85.

Louis Mariette Alexandra crystal-embellished tiara

By AbiSilvester on July 8th, 2009

louis-mariette-tiara.jpgI’m no tiara fan (you’re still not a Princess, get over it, etc) but I was interested to see that this rather ornate Alexandra crystal headpiece was being sold on Net-a-Porter as a fashion accessory, suggesting that this very weddingy item might soon be creeping into more general eveningwear. Wear it to give a “luminous lift to a simple LBD”, the blurb recommends!

This would certainly fit with the current trend for celebs like Peaches Geldof et al to rock up at events in wedding gear, and perhaps suggests that mere mortals will be claiming their status as regal fashion icons too!

The tiara, if you like it either as a bridal accessory or for dressing up will set you back £210

It’s a wrap: taffeta shirt for super shoulder protection

By AbiSilvester on July 2nd, 2009

coast-wrap.jpgWhether you marry in the sort of scorching weather we’re experiencing at the moment and are likely to burn, or you’re waiting till winter and need an extra layer, finding a pretty wrap to complement your dress can be a challenge. But with the current megatrend for strapless gowns it’s one that many brides-to-be need to take as seriously as choosing the dress itself.

I spotted this lovely gold wrap shirt at Coast which I think would look great with the majority of strapless dresses I’ve seen recetly. Like it? It’s not a bad price at all, for £80.

Charming charms for a handmade touch

By AbiSilvester on June 30th, 2009

Thumbnail image for siany-etsy.jpgIf you’re looking for a special piece of jewellery that you’d never find on the highstreet, then you’ll already know that Etsy is your best friend. I’m currently loving new store Sianyland where you’ll find delightfully quirky pieces, all of which are hand-made.

There are cocktail rings, bracelets and other eye-popping accessories here, and quite a few of the current items are very wedding friendly, particularly this fabulously long pearl and gold charm necklace. It would be a nice touch for a bride going in for the vintage look and is availble here (delivered from the UK) at $66 [Via Bridal Express]

Learn to make fascinators at the Make lounge

By AbiSilvester on June 24th, 2009

make-a-fascinator.jpgThis lovely creation from Sian over at Domestic Sluttery is an example of what you can put together at the ‘Festive Fascinators’ course at The Make Lounge in London. I’d been aware of this course for a while, but now a couple of friends have been and told me what a great time they had sewing and styling their own miniature cocktail hats, I’m itching to get stuck in myself.

The Lounge itself is a stylish haven of craft and creativity and is a great spot for hen parties, so why not organise an event to make accessories you’ll all wear on the day? More information is available on the site on how to book an event.

I think I’m a glamour junkie junkie…

By AbiSilvester on June 24th, 2009

glamor-junkie.jpgI’ve just discovered this site and am now finding myself popping back for a look every time I’m after a new accessory or headwear pick. Glamour Junkie is well-named, because you will find yourself hooked once you’ve gone in for a look, and from this small selection of images, you’ll soon see why.

The beautifully hand-crafted accessories are made using a technique I’ve certainly never heard of before called ‘nuno felting’, which results in an ultra-light yet strong finish. But the icing on the cake is that the company has been accepted by Green Union as an ethical and eco friendly wedding supplier, so it’s ideal for brides who want to ensure their big day is a happy event for everyone involved. The shiniest, silliest clutch bag in the world

By AbiSilvester on June 22nd, 2009

louboutin-shiny-bag.jpgOh my…how impossibly shiny and covetable is this gorgeous clutch bag? It’s just landed at Brides Magazine, where there’s very little information on it at present, other than it’s by Christian Louboutin and is available in silver or gold.

I expect to see the bag go on sale closer to the Christmas period, when it’ll make a fantastic accessory for a winter wedding, based as it so clearly is on a giftwrap rosette. I love the little shoe-motif clasp to bits and can see this being the perfect bridal accessory to be brought out during the festive season for many years to come.

Budget Bride: How to make a floral headdress

By AbiSilvester on June 2nd, 2009

bridalheadpiece_final2.jpgI’ve always thought summer was the perfect time for a wedding. Sunshine, birds singing…all that romantic stuff. For another thing, flowers are in full bloom, which is the key ingredient of this bridal headdress.

Made by Brookelynn Morris at Craftzine this classically beautiful forget-me-not and pearl headband would be the perfect accessory to set off a brides’ wedding dress. The flowers keep that traditional tone, while the strand of pearls brings it up to date.

Make it for your own wedding if you have the time, or it would make great wedding present for a friend who’s getting married. Plus as something blue and new, it would probably bring tonnes of luck! If you want to try making it, a full and very detailed tutorial can be found here. [By Steph Powell]

Luscious lace from Emma Embery

By AbiSilvester on May 28th, 2009

emma-embery.jpgEmma Embery is a new name to the bridalwear industry, and is one you should definitely check out if you want your look to have a handmade touch. She’s particularly brilliant at veils and hairpieces (which knock spots off the mass-produced ones we’re all getting so tired of seeing) but she does a line in dresses too.

Pictured above is her chiffon ‘Grace’ slip, which would be ideal for a summer or beach wedding: romantic vintage vhite lace is set off by embroidery on the front panel, and a splash of French lace on the neckline. There’s loads more on the site that would be ideal for guests and bridesmaids, too.

DIY Bride: ‘something blue’ pin

By AbiSilvester on May 26th, 2009

something-blue-pin.jpgIf you’re superstitious (or have suddenly developed superstition due to wedding-induced insanity) and are suddenly panicking about having not yet picked out ‘something blue’ at the 11th hour, then a good answer could be a discreet splash of the sacred colour courtesy of this little hairpin you can make yourself. It’s so simple to make, you could probably do it at the venue if your last minute search for anything blue has proven fruitless!

Full instructions can be found here.

Unconventional bridal headwear you can ‘try on’ online!

By AbiSilvester on May 21st, 2009

floral-headdress.jpgyvette-hat.jpgOne wedding trend I really hope will never come back is the big hatted look, aka how to age yourself by ten years in ten seconds. Whether you’re the bride or a guest, it’s good to know we now have the choice of various types of veil, no veil, cocktail hat, fascinator or — if you want to really push the envelope — a headdress that’s made entirely from flowers.

Yvette Jelfts has some really original pieces, including this breathtaking gypsophaelia circular ‘halo’. But if you’re not sure a style will suit you, the absolute best thing about Yvette’s site is that you can virtually ‘try on’ individual pieces, but uploading a photo of yourself then playing around with a simple drag-and-drop tool. Here I am giving it a try!

Tuesday Trends: The corsage club

By AbiSilvester on May 12th, 2009

corsage.jpgCorsages have always been very much part of the summer formalwear wardrobe, but they are bigger than ever in bridalwear just now. Of course, we’ve probably got SJP to think for this after she wore that dress in the Sex & the City movie (though it was one of many gorgoues frocks she ultimately didn’t marry in!) but whatever your style, an artfully-placed flower is an attractive and versatile addition to your look.

The best thing about corsages is the amount they add in value to an outfit, meaning you can add one of your own at minimal cost for maximum impact. Read on over the jump for details of the dresses pictured here (all of which come with flowers!) and where you can find your own floral decorations to transform a plainer dress into a stunning summer sensation!

Four folksy fascinators for Friday

By AbiSilvester on May 8th, 2009

folksy-fascinators.jpgNothing sets off a summer dress more prettily than a floral fascinator, so I’ve picked out a few of my favourite hand-made headpieces for you to check out today.

Since fascinators have become a bit ‘generic’ (I remember the days when people who know what they were called would try to show off their ‘new word’ in conversation), it’s become harder to track down really individual ones that aren’t too run-of-the-mill. All of these are hand-made, so you shouldn’t find yourself clashing with too many wedding guests if you choose to don one of these.

Read on over the jump for details of each item
