Bridal hair: Style your hair Valentine’s Day pretty with a Twist of Love

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on February 14th, 2012

How you wear your hair can make such a difference on whether it’ll be a good day or a bad day – this is especially the case when that day is your wedding day. Whichever style you’re thinking about for your big day, make sure you do a couple of test days to ensure everything is the way it is meant to be. And whatever you do, don’t make any drastic changes to style, colour or length in the months leading up to your wedding day…

As today is Valentine’s Day we thought we’d give you a style tip called the Twist of Love, which is certain to send your Prince Charming into a spin. The plaited style is sweet and innocent with a hint of sexy and can be easily created at home by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Starting with damp hair (either towel-dried or misted), use a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair. Then, using a fine-tooth comb, part the hair down the middle of the head. Clip one side up right above the ear.

Step 2: On the other side of the part, use the fine comb to gather a thin section of hair from the crown. This section should measure about 2 inches from the hairline to the top of the head.

Step 3: Divide this section into three, and begin a French braid starting at the crown and curving toward the temple, then toward the  back of the head, like the top lobe of a heart. You will be lifting hair into the braid only from this side of the part. Leave no loose hair in front of the ear.

Step 4: When you reach the centre part at the back of the head, secure the braid with a ponytail holder. If the hair is very long, end the braid about mid ear; the ends will hang down the back.

Step 5: Clip up the hair on the other side of the part and repeat the process. Secure with a ponytail holder.

Step 6: Join the two ends of the braids together in the back with a ponytail holder to form the bottom point of the heart.

Thank you to Tatiana Kareline of Tatiana Hair Extensions for sharing!

And if you’re more visually led, here are some images to help you style your hair Valentine’s Day pretty any day!

After all red carpet events are great for drawing inspiration on as these wonderful ladies will have had the top hairdressers work their magic on their tresses.

Bridal beauty: three modern cat eye looks

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on January 16th, 2012

Many brides usually opt for demure make-up for their wedding day, but if you fancy just adding a touch of je ne sais quoi, yet keeping it classy, the modern cat eye look is for you. I am a big fan of the ‘cat eye’ look when it comes to eye make-up, try to ensure my eyes had a flirty flick as often as possible.

Hot from the SS12 catwalks, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani and Badgley Mischka all embraced the Rock ‘n Roll look which is great for the day as well as the wedding reception. Just make sure you keep your lips neutral to avoid the scary clown look. It’s all about balancing, and why not make the focus on your eyes as well as your wedding dress!

My favourite is the sexy, vintage inspired flick by D&G.

Nail art for your wedding day

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on September 15th, 2011

Most brides spend hours buffing and polishing, waxing and moisturising, trimming and conditioning before their wedding day? The make-up and hair has been deliberated down to the very last detail, but what about your nails? Nothing is nastier than a set of barely there nails, but then again a ‘perfect 10′ of horrible fake nails can be equally ghastly. So what do you do? Well first of all you hope you can grow your own nails to be of a certain standard, if not, go for the fake option but perhaps decorate them with a little bit of nail art.

Will you go for the classic French manicure or au natural, or will you opt for a more ‘daring’ choice and have someone embellish your nails with nail art?

Kim Kardashian’s official wedding photos

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on August 26th, 2011

The official photos of Kim Kardashian have finally appeared in print! We’ve given you a preview Kim and Kris’ celebrity wedding, and here are the official wedding photographs that appear in this week’s People magazine.

Kim actually had no less than THREE wedding gowns designed by Vera Wang for her big day and her hair was inspired by Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor.

When Kim Kardashian married Kris Humphries in a lavish wedding ceremony last weekend she wore her hair in a classic chignon.

Her hair stylist Peter Savic has now revealed he wanted Kim to look like a glamorous film star of yesteryear – well it certainly went very well with the Old Hollywood wedding reception theme.

Savic said: “We wanted to make her an amazing movie star from the 40s, 50s or 60s like Sophia Loren or Ava Gardner or Elizabeth Taylor. She looked very polished. It was classic and tasteful yet exotic.”

Kim’s intricate chignon was also a one off and he had just created it that day. What, Kim had not tried the hairstyle before her actual wedding day?! And she didn’t go all Bridezilla on your ass? Impressive.

The reality TV star’s bridal look was completed by make-up artist Mario Dedivanovic who gave her a fresh-faced look for the evening wedding.

I guess Kim wanted to look like her photoshopped photos…

Vivienne Westwood criticises Kate Middleton’s royal make-up. What do you think?

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on August 10th, 2011

Newlywed Duchess Catherine might have worn an Alexander McQueen on her wedding day and received much acclaim for choosing a slightly ‘edgy’ British brand, but her penchant for heavy black liner is not loved by all.

The latest to speak about the new royal’s make-up choices is grande Dame of British fashion, Vivienne Westwood who told the Sunday Times Magazine: ‘I think she’s got a problem with eye make-up. The sharp line around her eyes make her look hard. Either she should be smudgy or wear none.’

Westwood moved on to call Kate’s image ‘ordinary’. We can’t think of anything worse than to be called ordinary – especially not by someone like Vivienne who certainly knows a thing or two about fashion and style.

It appears that many would like to see Kate wear different make-up and hair, with fashion duo Viktor & Rolf expressing the same sentiments not long ago.

As we’ve said before we’d love to see Kate with a flirty 50’s flick with just a hint of eyeliner on the lower lash line.

Should Kate ditch her strong eyeliner that has become her security blanket and try out different styles to let her natural beauty shine through? Let us know in the comments below what beauty style you think Kate should adopt!

Bridal make-up: Step-by-step guide to get the natural glow on your wedding day

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on July 20th, 2011

Whether you’re getting married in a church or on an Italian hilltop, it is important to get the wedding make-up right. According to make-up artist Jacqui O’Shea the no-make-up look is popular with brides and that healthy glow is all down to the right products. So if you’re looking for tips on how to achieve the natural glamour for your wedding day read on!

1. Start with a make-up base that adds highlights to your skin. Jacqui recommends MAC Strobe Cream of Clarins Instant Complexion Perfector to wear under make-up and to add reflection to the skin.

2. Use a light mineral bronzer for bronzing and contouring. Jane Iredale does mineral make-up that works wonders.

3. Add an eyelid primer to the eyes to hold colour in place without creasing. Again MAC has good products for this.

4. For definition use a gel liner that you place long the lash line to increase the density of lashes and to give a visual effect of changing the shape of the eye.

5. When it comes to lips use an exfoliator, like Laura Mercier Lip Polish, to exfoliate and condition lips. Then use a lip liner to avoid the lipstick to run and finish with a lipstick for long-lasting colour.

Final tip! To look fabulous in your wedding photos use the MAC Fix + Spray to close pores and keep your make-up in place.

We sure want to fill our make-up bags with the products above and test this for ourselves!

Deciding which hair style to go with on your wedding day can be a difficult decision. Depending on the length of the hair and the dress design, do you go with an all down, a bun, a chingon or an up-down do?

Unfortunately us ‘normal’ people don’t get to go to glitzy events and film premiers too often so we’re not lucky enough to have a hair stylist on speed dial who can give us a new look each time. So usually we find a style that works and stick to it.

When it comes to bridal hair, a good source of inspiration is to look at those who do have stylists at their beck and call: the celebrities. We’ve done a little gallery of some of the leading ladies, including the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate – do let us know which one is your favourite by leaving a comment below!

Review: Bridal hair emergency – let Lisa Shepherd London help you. Get 30% off your first visit!

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on June 13th, 2011

Photo: Lisa Shepherd London

Most women will agree that good hair can make or break the day. This is particularly true when it comes to a wedding, more precisely your wedding! It’s never advisable to leave colouring your hair until just a few days before the big day, nor is making a drastic change as you never know what could happen – as I learned the hard way a few weeks ago.

Wanting to update my dip-dye roots to a full blonde look, I booked myself in for a simple colouring appointment at Vannoli Hair, a place near my work. Cheap and cheerful I thought, how wrong could it go…

Having opted for a light ash blonde shade, my Drew Barrymore inspired locks ended up looking like more Madam Mim than Daryl Hannah and had to be stripped for the unsightly grey, leaving a horrible yellowish tint. Needless to say but after sitting through three colours in less than four hours, my scalp was burning – there were even some painful sores – and I was in shock as I left the salon. Now I wasn’t getting married within the next week nor had I anywhere special to go that evening but I was horrified: How can someone who is a trained hairdresser mess up so royally?!

Waking up to a yellow scarecrow look, I sent out a desperate cry for help on Twitter the next morning. Luckily the wonderful Wahanda and Lisa Shepherd London replied within minutes, so in I went for a consultation with Director Jason Cocking and before I knew it I was booked in for a rescue hair colouring session the very next day.

On the sunny Saturday morning, Jason and his team welcomed me with smiles and a calm atmosphere – the salon recently won Salon Interior of the Year – that immediately made me less stressed. After talking me through the process, Jason mixed the Swartzkopf colour and applied it on my already over-treated roots – it offered a wonderful cooling sensation on my still burning scalp.

Photo: Lisa Shepherd London

After 30 minutes of relaxing in the ‘break out’ area with a cold drink and magazines – Jason checked in regularly to see how the colour was coming along – the rinse and blow-dry was skilfully done and the result: sheer perfection!

In between the colour, rise and blow-dry I picked Jason’s brain about what the bridal trends for 2011 are. Jason believes one bridal trend this year will be plaits that incorporate the bride’s dress colour, for example sample material from the dress that is intertwined into the hair to create a romantic side pleat. This adds soft texture and will make an amazing catwalk look for any bride walking down the aisle.

He also thinks a classic look – the French roll – will make a comeback this year, again with a romantic feel that uses hair wavers to create a romantic feel rather than the sleek and shiny looks seen in previous years.

For bridesmaids, Jason thinks a good look is using rope plaits to create a half-up, half-down look, as recently seen on Pippa Middleton. This pulls the hair off the face and is suitable for all face shapes.

So what does Jason make of all the celebrity weddings this year? With Kate Moss, Lily Allen and Mark Ronson tying the knot this summer, he thinks “the hair will be undressed as these celebrities follow vintage trends.” We can’t agree more Jason.

And if you’re interested, here is the result of my colouring rescue!

Sarah Burton’s joy at Kate’s dress

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on May 4th, 2011

Photo: Peter Kramer/AP/Press Association

Sarah Burton has revealed that making Princess Kate’s wedding dress was a “lovely” experience.

The British designer – who is the creative head of Alexander McQueen – had a great time making the one-of-a-kind gown for her wedding to Prince William, which she believes shows a lot of the 29-year-old beauty’s personality. We want to know: is Kate’s style icon Princess Grace of Monaco!

Burton said: “It couldn’t have been more lovely. It was a collaboration. It was made for her and has a lot of her personality in it.”

The identity of Kate’s wedding dress designer was the most guarded secret in the run up to the wedding, and it was almost revealed when Burton “hid” under a big hat and whatnot as she went into the Goring Hotel in London the night before the wedding on 29 April. Some fashionistas, like The Daily Telegraph’s Fashion Director, Hilary Alexander, successfully identified Sarah under her disguise on the grounds of her accessories. That’s what you get for wearing Alexander McQueen accessories Sarah! Should have opted for something different that the things you usually wear – or the label you design for…

While the focus of Kate’s wedding dress, we can now reveal that the Duchess of Cambridge was wearing a little know perfume by British brand Illuminum on her big day.

The scent, entitled White Gardenia Petals, is said to have the smell of a “vase of white flowers quivering in the breeze by an open window”.

Kate Middleton’s Royal Wedding make-up

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on May 3rd, 2011

Photo: Lewis Whyld/PA Wire

Even though she was walking down the aisle in the most expensive wedding this side of the Roman Empire (we’re guessing) in front of billions of viewers, Kate, now officially Catherine, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, decided to do her own make-up.

Kate told aides that she “knows her own face” and didn’t think a professional could do a better job than her, the Daily Mail reported.

OK, so she might have brushed up on her skills with some private lessons, but on the day it was Catherine who traced her eyes with black eyeliner and enhancing her cheekbones with a pink blush colour and matching lipstick shade.

The royal bride was adamant that her Prince William had to recognise her and also opted for a half-up-half-down hairdo done by James Pryce from the Richard Ward salon.

I’m very much in favour for the smokey eye effect, but having one strong line under the eye has never been my thing. Personally I opt for a 1950s flirty flick on the upper lash line in the day and add black eyeliner pencil to the bottom lash wetline for a more dramatic evening look.

What did you think of Kate’s wedding day make-up?
