However gorgeous your dress may be, your wedding ‘do’ will ultimately make or break your look. But what if you don’t want to splash out on an expensive hair makeover prior to the event? I’ve found that (much to my surprise) the key to looking your best could be a good old-fashioned blow dry, and here’s why…
Blow drying is enjoying something of a revival at the moment, providing a bouncy antidote to the bland and rather flat look created by the straightening irons we’ve all sworn by for the past decade. As a GHD devotee with an unruly wave, I was highly sceptical when I first heard this claim, but when I finally agreed to let a stylist near me with a hairdryer, I was delighted by the results. My hair was full of life and body, yet very much ‘tamed’, giving it a filmstar look that instantly said ‘weddings!’ to me. And once you’ve perfected this skill at home, you can have that glamour every day, for free.
Read on for our top blowdrying tips from a styling expert…

Beauty - Hair & Makeup, Pre-Wedding Celebrations
By AbiSilvester on June 9th, 2009
Hordes of hens descend on Brighton every weekend for pre-wedding fun and frolics, and perhaps you’ll soon be one of them! But when the party’s over you need somewhere to chill out and freshen up – and unless you’re very lucky with the weather, the beach just won’t cut it…
A far better option is to pitch up at one of the town’s boutique salons and get some serious looking after; maybe with a glass of restorative pink bubbly in your hand. And having dropped in there on a flying visit last week where they did a great job on my much-neglected nails (see above!), I can to recommend The Lanes Health and Beauty as being very much up to the job.
The salon is tucked away in the North Laines, away from the bustle and madness of Brighton town centre, and it’s the perfect place to chill out, making it very popular with hen parties, either for a pre-celebration girly getting ready session or as a haven for recovery after the main event…

Are you reaching that stage of wanting to jack in this whole ‘big day’ malarky to elope somewhere so far away that even your most loyal friends will just leave you to it? If so, you may be in need of some looking after, and Debenhams have just introduced a new beauty and pampering scheme that I think is just what the doctor ordered for stressed-out brides-to-be.
Their Beauty Club makes those life-saving pampering treats a little bit easier to afford, getting you looking your best with mimimal cost and effort. As with many loyalty cards, you earn points as you spend on goodies from the beauty or fragrance counter, but the fun part is all the in-store beauty events and activities you’ll find out about when you join – all as part of Debenhams 23 Days of Pampering, which should allow you to spend some quality me-time away from it all! You can sign up online for free to become a member, so head here for more info.

Perfume has always been a romantic sort of gift – it’s certainly intimate – and with a name like Ralph Lauren Romance the popular scent seems tailor made for weddings.
Now Ralph Lauren has come out with another version of the signature fragrance – Ralph Lauren Romance Always Yours. It comes in a limited-edition Parfum (at the link above), $225, and also an Elixer de Parfum Spray, $72.
More reasons it would make a lovely wedding gift? Launching 10 years after the original Ralph Lauren Romance and was created by the same perfumer, Harry Fremont, it “celebrates a deeper commitment with a more complex formulation.” It’s limited edition, so only available in this , the year of your marriage. And, the hand-crafted glass dauber is faceted “in the spirit of a diamond, the modern symbol of commitment and love, and the traditional gift for 10 years of marriage.”
So, he would only buy this for you and never some tramp off the street is what they’re saying.

Brides have been wanting to use pink in their weddings as long as weddings have had “colors.” Here’s a modern twist that will keep your reception from looking like a Pepto-Bismol convention. Pair the pretty hue with cheerful mates like yellow and orange.
This slideshow at Martha Stewart Weddings gives you ideas for everything from flowers to favor boxes in these three colors. Our favorite idea is this one – poppy hair combs for your bridesmaids in the three colors.
Your girls can either splash out with one behind the ear, or stay more modest by incorporating the comb into an updo. Plus it will make a lovely momento of the special day they shared with you.

The classic pearl string is, of course, one of the most safe and stylish bets for brides as far as necklaces go. If you’re not really up for decorating your decollétage, but you love the look, this double strand hairband is ideal.
While I’d rather wear it nestled in the hair than across the forehead, like in this picture, it could prove very versatile from anything from traditional to twenties-inspired. It’s made from faux pearls too, so it’s a bit of a bargain at £10.

All the lotions and potions we use can feel extra luxurious to us, but sometimes all those scents can be a bit of a heady potion for men when they just want a bit of a hug. You can’t go wrong, however, with pampering that smells simply fresh and clean.
Burt’s Bees products are always being raved about by my friends, and this cute little gift set is a great idea for gifting a bride, or for buying for yourself. With shower gels and foot spa treatments, all the pampering bases are covered. Plus, if you’re anything like as paranoid as I tend to be, you won’t mind the inclusion of some yummy mints. After that, you can pile on his favourite perfume worry free! Get it from Bath & Unwind for £24.99.

Okay, fellas, bear with me for one moment while I put forward the case for a lipsalve. First of all, there’s nothing less attractive looking, let alone feeling, than some seriously winter-chapped lips. It stands to reason, then, that you’d better make sure they’re looking good on your wedding day, or there might be a mightily peeved bride come photo time!
The best thing of all about this product is that it is scent and colour free, meaning that even your most beady eyed of friends won’t spot that you’re wearing anything on your smackers. Just in case that still hasn’t convinced you, look at that manly packaging… no frills on that, eh? Get some from Sephora online for $12.

As perfectly illustrated by our Iconic Brides column, there’s been many a celebrity wedding over time which inspires us. If you’re a bride who adores the style of Miss Jackie Bouvier when she became Mrs Kennedy, Long Live Marriage have the ideal accessory.
Their reproduction of her classic veil, albeit in a much more wearable waist length, is a great take on the vintage style. If you’re more of a Grace Kelly fan, they also have a recreation of her sublime headgear too. Get more info from the website.

Did anyone see last week’s Miss Naked Beauty on TV? The one where Gok Wan and Myleene Klass sprayed a gaggle of made-up gals with fire hoses?
The only girl left with perfect lippy was the one wearing Lipcote lipstick sealer over hers and if that isn’t a great advertisement for the brand then I don’t know what is! It costs around £3.35 from Boots, Superdrug, supermarkets etc.

I’m admittedly not one for veils with the majority of bridal ensembles, favouring a well crafted updo with some chic hair accessories. For my money, this Accessorize hair clip is an ideal piece for brides.
Just sparkly enough to really make a statement, but by no means tacky, the vintage edge gives it even more appeal. I love the simple leaf design that’s just perfect for Autumn. Even better, it’s just £12 from Accessorize online or in the shops.
