Films featuring weddings to spark your imagination

By Elisabeth on December 16th, 2010

HAPPY BRIDE2.jpgWe don’t blame you if you don’t want to venture outside on cold winter evenings. What better way to spend them than curled up on the sofa with a good film. And if you’re planning a wedding no one will question you if your choice is a film where the plot revolves around tying the knot. Who knows, you might pick up an idea or two!

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
Stars Julia Roberts who finds herself with a HUGE dilemma: her best friend, and the guy she loves, is marring someone else (title is somewhat of a give-away)! The story goes: best friends agree to marry one another if they haven’t found someone to marry before they reach a certain age. The film is what happens (in Hollywood) when one of them actually finds his – or her – other half, played by Cameron Diaz, and jealousy takes control. Do you know anyone who has this kind of deal with a very good friend?

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
The classic Brit flick that made women become infatuated with Hugh Grant. Again the title is a clue to what is to come. A group of British friends find themselves with an abundance of weddings on their social calendars – sound familiar? First there are none then they all come along at once… This is a tale of boy meets girl at wedding, girl leaves the country, boy lives through the heartache of the one that got away, boy and girl meet again (at another wedding!), girl is now engaged, boy goes on a quest to find his ‘the one’, something else happens, and well… watch it and find out if you haven’t already!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
This film tells the story of two star-crossed lovers and the battle to be with each other. Not exactly Romeo and Juliet, but it’s a heart-warming story about Greek 30-something year old Toula who is expected to follow traditions and marry a fellow Greek. Cue handsome non-Greek man (SATC’s Aiden – swoon) and plans turn out to be not so straightforward anymore. Will love conquer tradition?

The Wedding Planner (2001)
Mary Fiore (Jennifer Lopez) is the ambitious and hard-working wedding planner who orchestras other people’s weddings with a precision that even Monica in Friends would be jealous of. After a shoe incident, Mary falls for a handsome doctor (Matthew McConaughey) who turns out to be the groom in her next job! How will this turn out?

27 Dresses (2008)
Katherine Heigl of Grey’s Anatomy fame plays Jane, always the bridesmaid never the bride. No prize for guessing how many times Jane has been a bridesmaid, but this is a fun take on weddings and will have you giggling well into the end credits. Will Jane find a man of her own or is her future filled with puffball arms and horrible dresses?

Muriel’s Wedding (1994)
In the sleepy town of Porpoise Spit, Australia, Muriel spends her days alone in her room listening to Abba and dreaming of her big wedding. The twist is that Muriel has never been on a date. Not one of the popular girls at school, she finds a true friend in carefree Rhonda. They end up moving to Sydney, where Muriel, free from the criticism of her father, can finally embrace life and make herself happy.

Wedding Crashers (2005)
Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play any bride’s worst nightmare: wedding reception crashers! Powered by the idea that weddings is a good place to meet someone – if only for one night – the pair have made it into a second job to sneak into weddings to take advantage of the romantic settings and women looking for love. A funny account of weddings from a male point-of-view.

Four Weddings: will you be tuning in?

By AbiSilvester on July 3rd, 2009

four-weddings-living-tv.pngIf the Big Brother house isn’t providing you with enough in the way of rows, tantrums and ‘real characters’, then Living TV’s Four Weddings; a sort of ‘Come Dine With Me’ for weddings, promises to adequately fill your appetite for drama.

In each episode, four couples who’ve left their shame at the door will invite their rivals to voice their opinions on choices they’ve made in their wedding planning, going head-to-head over dresses, cakes, venues and even the first dance. One will win a dream honeymoon, but we’re guaranteed ten weeks of full-on wedding warfare on the way!

The bitch-fest begins on Monday at 9pm.

Either way, I’m seeing a lot of wedding-related craft ideas pop up at the moment, so I was not at all surprised to hear about Wedding Papercrafts: a new book that’s full of projects to make accessories that will help create a unique and wonderful day.

Do you want to marry a cartoon character?

By admin on January 12th, 2009

It’s a real mind boggle knowing what is going on in the minds of other people. Take this Japanese man, Taichi Takashita, he must have been thinking about the idea of wanting to marry a cartoon character for a while before he began his online petition. Within a week he had gathered 1000 signatures and you just know more than one of them will be fighting it out over the character of their choice.

“I am no longer interested in three dimensions. I would even like to become a resident of the two-dimensional world,” he wrote. “However, that seems impossible with present-day technology. Therefore, at the very least, would it be possible to legally authorise marriage with a two-dimensional character?”

We don’t know whether he’s serious or not but I am perturbed that Superwoman or Mickey Mouse could be married off without their consent. Would you marry a fictional character if you could? [via Manolo for the Brides]

Modern Bride features Bride Wars’ Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson

By admin on December 29th, 2008

Modern Bride.jpgI must admit I’m a big fan of happy-go-lucky-chick-lit style films. There’s enough murder and mayhem in the world without making it into entertainment too, right? So, I’m pretty keen on films that most likely have a happy ending. Anyway, Bride Wars, out next week, looks like it’ll be good fun and I see the stars, Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson, have snagged the Feb/March cover of Modern Bride magazine.

These gorgeous origami cranes are made from colourful printed paper and look amazing together and are said to bring luck so I’m all for that.

The couple, Kim and Brent, posted the pictures of various aspects of their DIY wedding and there are plenty of ideas to inspire you if you’re going the DIY route. Congrats to the couple! [via Craftster]

Black Meringue: no-nonsense tips for alternative brides

By AbiSilvester on December 22nd, 2008

black-meringue.jpgAs an avid reader of Offbeat Bride, I was delighted to see that another resource for those seeking a non-traditional wedding had popped into existence: Black Meringue.

Whether you’re looking for advice on some killer heels you wouldn’t find in John Lewis, tips for holding a Halloween wedding, some exceptionally sexy bridal underwear or or just a nice vintage hat, this magazine and website is a good starting point for planning your day to remember. There’s also a well written ‘pink weddings’ section for same-sex couples. But it’s the site’s attitude that really gets my vote, with articles entitled ‘Sod the Gym’ and ‘let’s get kitsched!’ – and reading the case studies of weird and wonderful weddings certainly warmed my heart.
