"I’m in London and my bridesmaid is in Edinburgh and we’re really struggling
with finding her an outfit. The basic issue is trying to find a simple and elegant, chocolate brown,
full-length evening dress on the high street/off the peg that would be
suitable for a bridesmaid. She is a UK 14/16 and is quite busty, so something with a little support
would be good. Do you have any suggestions?"
I love a challenge (and the opportunity to browse shops online and call it work) so I went in search of some great dresses that will suit your bridesmaid. I hope she realises how lucky she is to have a friend who won’t dress her up in some nasty upholstery cast-off! It did prove to be quite a challenge because even though the dress is big this year, being able to find one that matched all your requirements was tough so I’ve found a variety of different shades and cuts…

We all love to treat our friends to something nice so what better occasion to lay treats on your bridesmaids for their fab job than at your wedding.
I’ve put together a few ideas for a great gift bag stuffed full of treasures that can be mixed and matched to individual tastes. It makes sense to start with a multi functional tote bag or a big straw summer bag like this one from Topshop to cart their haul home and I’ve included options for both our UK and US readers…

I must still have polka dots on the brain (Gemma does too) because I spotted (groan) this dress that would make a fabulous bridesmaid or flower girl dress. The oversized spots are fun and the fluffy tulle underskirt gives the dress the right amount of oomph to be for a special occasion. Polka dot princesses will love it. Around £200 Simonetta

Have your guests turned to you for advice on what they should wear to your wedding? Got a troublesome relative who needs shopping help before you have to airbrush that horrid frock that is more pukey than Pucci out of the picture? Send them over to Net-A-Porter’s style guide for weddings. Featuring classic, beach and modern styles, they’ve put together looks for the bride, her mother, best friend and ex-girlfriends.
The grecian nude silk chiffon dress by Chloe at £1,159 is their pick for the bride’s best friend and it would be equally gorgeous as a bridesmaid dress too.

Following on the theme of seemingly random wedding items jazzed up with a wedding theme, Gemma spotted the bridal emergency flip flop kit. The flip flops fold in half to fit inside a matching plain or logo pouch. Due to the toepost strap they deem them perfect for post pedicures to stop you smudging up your new twinkly toes. Much to my own chagrin, I’m actually starting to think these might be quite useful. Available in white or black, bride or bridesmaid $32 – $30 at Shop Intuition.

Ok, I may have just mentioned (again) about going high street for your bridesmaid apparel but now I’m going to about face and head back to formal bridesmaid attire. Forever Bridals have a huge range of unostentatious but definitely glamorous dresses for all the female party.
The trio to the left are in design #76111. Both the ribbon detail and 3/4 dresses are huge this season plus the colourways come in a dazzling 48 combinations for the dress and bodice trim. And the whole range is available in both the UK and UK.

The rise of glam evening dresses in stores has instigated the move away from the traditional bridesmaid dresses – big, extravagent numbers worn once and sentimentally held on to forever, clogging up vital room in the closet. Savvy brides and their attendants have moved towards the high street – selecting gorgeous gowns that will look fab on the day and can be worn a bazillion times afterwards.

Stumped as to what to give your bridesmaid as a thank you present for all their help, support and for pre-empting any unforseen disasters? The best -and default!- option is a piece of jewellery whether it is costume, precious or bespoke.
We like the idea of building your own charm bracelet from Pure Jewels. Starting with a silver link chain, £25, add on the charms that epitomise your day. We like the enamelled heart charm £15, four leaf clover £8, handbag charm £8 and kissing boy and girl £8 (pictured).

Unique shoe company Absolutely Audrey have a whole range of shoe clips, including a bridal range, that would make great accessories for the bride as well as gifts for the bridemaids. We love the idea of glamming up a pair of shoes (handbags, jeans or anything else for that matter) with the many varied designs. Classic styles include the Greta pearl cluster $25 and satin Cherish bows $35.
Fancy something with a bit more pizazz? The Donna Bella rhinestone clips come in green (pictured), red, taupe or clear $30. They ship worldwide.

Reader Scarlett tipped us off about Jenny Yoo’s gorgeous creations for the bridal party. So we had to show you the stunning assymetrical Penelope dress with the sash shoulder detail. The colour pictured is ‘concord’ silk charmeuse but it also comes in a bazillion other colours.
The only problem is will the bridesmaid out glam you? No… Will she thank you for you not immortalising her forever as a Laura Ashley sofa reject? Without a doubt.
$425 for one or two, $375 for 3+
