Daily Frock: Ana Cristache ‘Emmy’

By AbiSilvester on May 5th, 2009

ana-christache-emmy.jpgI’m breaking all my own rules on Bridalwave today; first it was the cake toppers, now here’s a dress from a designer who insists on displaying all her work in black and white, which I generally disapprove of when I’m looking at something I might be about to spend thousands of pounds on!

But pet rants aside, I’m really rather taken with this fabulously chic French tulle gown by Ana Cristache. It’s a fashionable high-waisted silhouette, spangled with hand-made applique flowers and set off by adorable oversized bow. It’s one of many innovative designs in Cristache’s made-to-measure collection which can be viewed online here. Prices start at £1,500

Daily Frock: Monique Lhuillier roses ballgown

By AbiSilvester on April 30th, 2009

monique-roses.jpgThis full and lavish frock by Monique Lhuillier really takes the ‘romantic roses’ look to another level, as the enitre skirt is constructed from complete, giant-sized, rose-shaped decorations. This innovative approach to creating volume is typical of Lhuillier’s inventive designs, and combines classic themes with a really out-there sense of style.

I can’t help but love this dress, which will really appeal to those who secretly aspire to the ‘meringue’ look but know better – and want something a little classier than most of the puffball styles out there – call it a gourmet meringue perhaps! Monique Lhuillier’s designs are available in the UK from Browns Bride.

Daily Frock: Stewart Parvin ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’

By AbiSilvester on April 22nd, 2009

some-kind-of-wonderful.jpgIt’s not often I indulge my fantasies by saying it, but if I was getting married any time soon I’d totally go with a dress like this one, from Stewart Parvin’s Black Label collection: it’s elegant, classic yet charged with a twist of daring that’s brought by the crimson sash and exquisitely sculpted bodice. Everything about it says ‘I might be about to tie the knot, but I’m in no hurry to stop dressing to impress!’

If you like this style, it’s fairly typical of Parvin’s look, which favours dramatic contrasts and ultra-feminine shapes. You can either browse for stockists online, or visit his showroom at 14 Motcomb Street, London.

Daily Frock: Manuel Mota

By AbiSilvester on April 20th, 2009

manuel-mota.jpgI’m not sure if it was the designer’s intention, but to me this ultra-long dress has a real hippie-chic vibe about it, which adds appeal for brides who want a really special dress that’s light, girlish and not at all stuffy. The fabric has a cut-out lace pattern throughout, and the cut is empire line, creating the illusion of an even longer skirt.

I like the collision of pretty prim bridal and folksy sun dress about this, and can see it going down a storm at a summer wedding. If this dress speaks to your inner flower child, it’s available at Pronovias

Daily Frock: Suzanne Neville Antoinette

By AbiSilvester on April 16th, 2009

suzanne-neville-antoinette.jpgIt must be the time of year getting to me, because I’m not usually a flowery person, but floral motifs on dresses are really speaking to me at the moment – and, it seems, to some of the top designers, too.

This short and kicky little number from Suzanne Neville’s ’09 collection is wonderfully light and playful. You’d have to love your legs (and be prepared to show off a little cleavage) to feel comfortable in it, but for those with the brass to pull it off, Antoinette is a fabulous choice. I was even more impressed when I saw the same dress in black, which makes for a daring and dramatic evening dress. Follow the jump to see for yourself! Suzanne Neville dresses are available at the designers showrooms in Wimslow, Guilford and Knightsbridge.

Daily Frock: 1950s vintage princess gown

By AbiSilvester on April 15th, 2009

1950s-wedding-dress2.jpg’50s wedding dresses are hugely popular at the moment and their ultra feminine silhouettes are a clear influence in many designers’ current collections.

If this is a style you like, why not cut to the chase and buy vintage? I spotted this fine specimen over at Love Miss Daisy, which stocks a steady stream of high quality second-hand wedding gowns from the 50s right through to the 80s. It’s a voluminous, princess-style dress with a stunning illusion lace neckline over a sweetheart style lining. One of the most striking features of the dress is its train, which is neatly pinned into an adorable bow. See over the jump for a back view.

Daily Frock: Stephanie Allin ‘Casablanca’ dress with butterfly clasp

By AbiSilvester on April 14th, 2009

stephanie-allin-cassablanca2.jpgThis ‘Casablanca’ gown by Stephanie Allin has so much going for it I had no trouble picking it out for today’s Daily Frock! The combination of A-line skirt and wrap-style waist has got to be one of the most flattering shapes around and make for a beautiful ensemble that’s set off by a silver butterfly clasp that’s very ‘now’.

If that wasn’t reason enough to fall for the dress, check out that fabulous neckline! The classic sweetheart cut is balanced beautifully by the fan-shaped capped sleeves. If you’re interested in this dress, expect to pay around £1800 or above. It’s available through One and Only.

Daily Frock: David Fielden starburst ballgown

By AbiSilvester on April 7th, 2009

david-fielden.jpgThere’s a lot of buzz forming around David Fielden’s current collection recently showcased in Milan, which has some of the most exciting contemporary dresses available at the moment. But it’s this stunning, full-length ballgown that has really stolen my heart.

The champagne-and-cream frock is a real triumph of tulle and satin, with a fairytale quality that will appeal to any bride’s more romantic side. But far from being overly soppy, it’s restrained enough to be on the right side of meringe and is stamped all over with Fielden’s signature sassy style. Who could resist the dreamy starburst detailing on the skirt?

Daily frock: Simple elegance by Giambattista Valli

By AbiSilvester on April 6th, 2009

GiambattistaValli12_BR_15jan09_b_320x480.jpgThis gorgeous and unusual ivory dress from Giambattista Valli’s debut bride collection is the perfect example of a dress made from really simple components that have been artfully put together to create a stunningly elegant gown.

I love the slightly retro pleat detailing on this dress, and although I’m not convinced by the wisdom of teaming it up with black accessories, can see it being set of nicely by a white lace fascinator or miniature pill-box hat.

Ian Stuart Sevruga for a couture look

By Andrea Thatcher on March 3rd, 2009

Ian Stuart Sevruga.jpg

If you’re looking for a dress with that couture look, you know the one I mean, then Ian Stuart is an excellent option. The dresses range around 1,500 British Pounds and look a lot more expensive than a lot of dresses in the same range, in my opinion. A couture dress is hard to pull of and requires a *couture* wedding to go along with it, but if that matches your style this one is beautiful. You could probably ditch the arm poofs.

Ralph Lauren shows plenty of wedding-ready frocks in Fall 2009 collection

By Andrea Thatcher on February 26th, 2009

Ralph Lauren fall 09 wedding dresses 1.jpg

As most of you know, I was covering New York Fashion Week for ShinyStyle and CatwalkQueen last week, hence the slowdown in coverage here. Your reward for being so patient with me? Straight off the runway wedding dresses! Ralph Lauren may or may not have had weddings in mind when he created the white dresses that floated down his Fall 09 runway last week, but I couldn’t think of anything else.

Wedspiration Gallery: white dresses on the red carpet

By Andrea Thatcher on February 24th, 2009

Hello all! I’m finally back from New York Fashion Week. And, okay, a day or two to recharge and then cover the Oscars! While fashion week saw fewer wedding dresses than usual, the Oscars was a veritable bevy of wedding gown possibilities. The ladies came out in white in droves, droves I tell you! If you include all the oyster and silver options it was like a bridal fashion show. Penelope Cruz in vintage Balmain and Melissa George in Dolce & Gabbana were probably the most obviously bridal. But Marisa Tomei’s Versace Atelier pleated gown was one of my favorites of the night, and my friend is already trying to figure out how to make Tina Fey’s Zac Posen her wedding dress.

Check them all out in the gallery below, and vote for your fave in a poll here.

Voluminous Suzanne Ermann Fantasia dress

By Andrea Thatcher on February 10th, 2009

Suzanne Ermann dress.jpg

Suzanne Ermann’s ready-to-wedd collection is full of these circles created with satin edging on ruffling tulle overskirts, and it works particularly well on this cutaway-front dress. The short-in-front, long-in-back silhouette is straight off the fall 2008 runways of designers like Nina Ricci, Elie Saab and Balmain. It’s terrific for a more adventurous bride who wants to show off the killer stems she busted her butt for pre-wedding.

Green-sash dress by Vera Wang

By admin on January 30th, 2009

Vera Wang 30 Jan.jpg
Vera Wang has taken the sash and turned it this way and that with this softly draping silk chiffon gown. The sash is moss coloured tulle with a corsage on the strapline – wouldn’t it be a fresh look for spring weddings? Prices range from $2500-5000 but you expected that, didn’t you?

Strapless mermaid gown by James Clifford

By admin on January 29th, 2009

James Clifford.jpg
I’ve always found mermaid gowns very appealing and this one looks particularly good with an assymetric dropped waist – it’s a style that adds curves to slimmer girls and looks great on those with hourglass figures. The pleated bodice has a Swarovski crystal band at Empire level which also elongates the body where a matching jewelled motif can be found on the hip. There’s a chapel length train and removable straps are included
