What type of Wedding Dress neckline should you choose?

By Debs Cass on July 18th, 2013

For some of us, the idea of the perfect wedding dress can start well before the big question’s been popped (- and possibly before adulthood?). Regardless, when you get down to it it can be a tricky choice what with so many styles and designs out there: As well as choosing the right dress silhouette for you, there’s also the different types of necklines to decide on.

Necklines can be just as important to consider as they can accentuate your best features, or detract away from those areas you’d rather not draw attention to.

Here’s our top ten bridal necklines you can pick your favourite from, depending on what works best for you.

Strapless Neckline

With no straps attached to the neckline, a strapless dress sits snugly across the bust and under the arms, fastening securely at the back. An elegant look ideal for all shapes, showing off the shoulders and collarbone and accentuating a long neck. Lightly boned to provide both support and flexibility, this style also has nude stretch-jersey lining through the body for a seamless under layer. net-a-porter

Making a limited wedding budget stretch can keep the savviest brides-to-be awake at night, however one option is not to blow the equivalent of the honeymoon on the dress. Not ignoring the fact that the dress plays a key role in the big day – so it still needs to be ‘the one’ for you, and as so many discerning brides are demanding these days, vintage style is ever sought after. With this in mind, here are our top ten vintage style wedding dresses suitable for all silhouettes, to be had for under £750.

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on May 17th, 2012

This has got to be the most exciting piece of news this week. One of our favourite wedding gown designers, Temperley London, is set to open its first ever flagship store in London’s Mayfair in November.

Fit for a queen,  Temperley’s HQ will spread its gorgeous designs in a six-floor Georgian home at 27 Burton street, housing three collections: Temperley Bridal, as well as Temperley London and ALICE by Temperley.

The 2012 Ophelia wedding dress collection is to die for and we’d happily walk down the aisle in one of these beauties.

Temperley Bridal Ophelia 2012 collection

By Andrea Petrou on May 11th, 2012

We’re officially in love. And this time we’re not talking about our hubby to be. Instead it’s Alice Temperley’s Ophelia 2012 bridal collection, which has stolen our hearts.

The range mixes boho, the flapper era and striking silhouettes to make this collection one to lust after.

If you’re a vintage gal at heart, you’ll love the designers Emmeline frock, which emulates the 20s Flapper look with beading and crystals, while the designer’s Kelly frock with its peacock design is great for brides who want to stand out in style.

It’s no wonder Kate Middleton is a fan of this designer.

See the gallery below for our top five frocks.

Get Pippa Middleton’s Alexander McQueen bridesmaid dress at Net-a-porter

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on November 22nd, 2011

The Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding dress that Kate Middleton wore at her royal wedding to Prince Williams has been copied numerous times since the April wedding. And now fans of the gown Pippa Middleton wore as she stepped into the spotlight as chief bridesmaid at the royal shindig seven months ago.

The beautifully cut, elegant and timeless Alexander McQueen silk-crepe gown is an almost identical copy of Pippa’s dress and is now being sold on net-a-porter.com for £1,995.

Despite being designed as a bridesmaid gown, I’m sure many British brides will be rushing to secure this particular gown as it offers a simple silhouette compared to more elaborate designs. And at just shy of £2k it is comes at a fraction of the price! Pippa’s gown is said to have cost around £20,000, but did include bespoke lace panels around the sleeves and neck as well as silk button detailing on the back. Hey, it was a royal wedding after all!

Can’t promise you’ll get a derrière like Pippa by wearing the Sarah Burton design, but it sure is a pretty choice for your wedding day.

New bridal design label Shakespeare in Love has launched their first UK collection of seven wedding dresses that offer brides-to-be high quality, beautiful dresses within an affordable price range.

Designer Samantha Shakespeare said: “I know how important the wedding budget is and I have worked with a lot of brides who have tried so many dresses on but when looking at the price tag was left a little disheartened and that is where the idea of Shakespeare in Love came from. I decided to create a brand which enabled brides to look through the whole collection knowing how much each dress cost and knowing that they wouldn’t have to compromise on style or quality.”

All dresses are available in ivory or white in sizes 6 to 26, and cost between £500-600.

Dylan Lauren dazzles in wedding dress designed by father Ralph Lauren for Vogue photoshoot

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on July 20th, 2011

We’d love to have a well-known fashion designer in our family as we would get them to make all of our pretty dresses. So it comes as no surprise that Dylan Lauren looked to her father Ralph Lauren to design her wedding dress.

Up until now no images have been seen of the 37-year-old’s dress, but as these pictures prove daddy sure did well.

As seen in the August issue of Vogue, the custom-made gown was a delicate creation of duchesse satin, silk tulle, georgette embroidery and had a tiered train. Stunning!

Dylan married hedge fund manager Paul Arrouet at her family’s Bedford Estate in June, where Ralph, 71, had the honour of walking his daughter down the aisle with his wife Ricky. But Ralph didn’t just go his own way, he’s said to have consulted bridal gown extraordinaire Vera Wang on the design of the dress. So it’s really a Wang Lauren creation. Lucky girl!

Bridalwave loves: Alexander McQueen Resort 2012

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on July 15th, 2011

We’ve fallen madly in love with Sarah Burton’s designs for Alexander McQueen. While we know this is not an actual wedding dress this white and gold gown from the Resort 2012 collection is simply amazing. The Resort 2012 is a fusion of military details, Edwardian silhouettes and stays true to classic McQueen elements – the gold-embellished gown – as well as an injection of Burton’s now softer design signature.

We love! We want!

The label is reputed for its designs that reflect the romantic and feminine spirit of the bride, and the 2012 wedding dress collection was no exception.

With a nod to the twenties, stunning a-line cut dresses with intricate lace appliqué and bead embellishment. We also liked the long white silk gloves and the choker necklaces made with silk ribbons and tulle.

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on June 17th, 2011

Photo: Benoît Peverelli for Chanel

Were you as baffled as us when you saw the images of Lily Allen getting married in a wedding dress by French designer Delphine Manive? We thought it was meant to be Karl Lagerfeld!

As it turns out Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld DID make a bridal gown for Lily ahead of her wedding to Sam Cooper, which the newlywed mummy to be wore to the reception. Lily confirmed it via Twitter earlier today and an image of the sketch has been uploaded to Chanel.com.

Guess Lily wanted to keep the beautiful Chanel creation hidden from the world for a bit longer so that her nearest and dearest could see it before everyone else.

Carolina Herrera 2012 spring bridal collection

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on June 16th, 2011

Twilight fans can stop guessing who will design the wedding dress of Bella Swan, the creators of the vampire saga Summit Entertainment have confirmed via Twitter that Carolina Herrera is the woman behind the gown.

We have to wait a few more weeks to see Bella’s dress, but it will perhaps draw inspiration from Carolina Herrera’s 2012 spring collection which offers high necklines and long sleeves – Kate Middleton much?

The collection also features lots of romantic embroidered Chantilly lace, and a couple of dramatic full skirts as well.
