The Wedding Bill: Who should pay for the modern wedding?

By Cecilia Rydberg on March 1st, 2013
Will Kim be copying Kate's dress too?

We’re not all lucky enough to get the groom’s parents (via the tax payer) to pay for the happy day!

By Cecilia Rydberg

Along with being one of the happiest days of your life, a wedding is an occasion for moral dilemmas, financial woes and two or ten tantrums. When a marriage was a matter of economic opportunity and yes, also often a matter of love, it was standard that the family of the bride pay a dowry to the groom and his family – a payment of sorts for the bride’s future habitation with the man in question.

However, in more contemporary times, the dowry has evolved to a responsibility shift in the form of the parents of the bride paying for the wedding and all the costs that go along with it.
Yet, why should the parents of the bride dole out the cash? Well surprisingly, this tradition is no longer in the majority in the UK.

Pass the Buck

In the UK it is found that roughly 52% of couples nowadays pay for the expense of their wedding festivities, and this change, head of commercial at John Lewis Insurance says “may have come about because weddings are getting more expensive, meaning people are less willing to burden the bride’s parents with the whole cost.  It might also be that the increasing age of marrying couples has given them greater financial independence.”

Average Cost of a Wedding

According to the popular go-to website weddingguideuk.com, the average cost of a wedding lands on around £11,000. “My husband and I paid for the wedding ourselves and I’d say the average cost is between 5000 to 7000 for a ‘normal’ wedding,” says Wiveka Eklund, a native of Sweden.  “But in Sweden I think the trend is much the same as in England, it is about financial stability and whether you have the means to fund your own wedding or if you fall back on tradition, and let the parents of the bride (or groom) pay for the party.”

Splurge or Spend

For the couple that do not or cannot rely on their parents to dip into saving for financing their wedding some necessary steps need to be taken to come to a conclusion on how best to save, what to prioritise in terms of dress, venue, catering and so on, and when to spend!

Ways to save can be asking yourself the question of what can you do yourself; is it an option to make the invitations by hand, with a little home-made creative flair, is that something you would as a couple be able to take on in order to save a few hundred pounds?  Do you need a traditional 7-tiered white cake?  “My bridesmaids paid for their own dresses, I do not know if this is unorthodox, but it is something they offered to do and my wallet was grateful,” says Chatz Fernando who had a beach wedding in Sri Lanka.

Priorities vary from couple to couple, the venue and dress may be the most important to some and therefore couples might be more willing to cut back on the material expenses in order to snag their dream location. Having a good plan of action for the wedding, might as unromantic as it sounds, help make the transition into the marriage smoother.

As most celebs – and none celebs – Olivia took to Twitter to thank friends for the ‘congratulatory love’, and added “Thanks for all the sweet congratulatory love, friends! And may I compliment your savvy use of that nifty engagement ring emoticon.”

The couple have been dating since November 2011, meeting shortly after Olivia split from her husband of eight years, Tao Ruspoli.

Celebrity proposal and engagement ring predictions for 2013 and how to pick the perfect one

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on January 7th, 2013

Choosing the engagement ring is as an important a decision as deciding on the name of your first-born. Remember your lucky lady, as your little bundle of joy, will be linked with this decision for the rest of her life (unless she loses it or, worst case scenario, you decide to part ways.

If you get it wrong you might even find her refusing your hand in marriage. OK it mostly happens in films, but I’m sure there’s a lady out there who has declined a marriage proposal because the ring wasn’t right. Not only does it show your commitment but also that you know her. So what to do?

You could always have a look at her current jewellery collection. If it’s all silver, white gold or platinum with a simple feel, chances are she will run for the hills if you pick a massive pink rock set on yellow gold. Remember, she will be wearing this one for a long time so make sure you take your time to find the perfect engagement ring.

So you’ve had a snoop, now why not ask her best friend for advice? This is only recommended if you’re sure they are able to keep the secret.

Still uncertain about which style to go for? Look to the celebrities for inspiration. 2012 was a busy year for the leading ladies of film and fashion as nuptials were announced left right and center. With a little help of celebrity stylist Alex Longmore and the Platinum Guild International (PGI) we’ve put together a little gallery of celebrity engagements we foresee to happen 2013 and their potential engagement rings.

Do you hate your engagement ring? Did you tell him?

True Kim style this will be the wedding of all weddings (remember her last one), and we're sure to see a gigantic rock to seal the deal. All televised of course. Happy Christmas from Bridalwave – and a look at celebrity engagements and weddings of 2012

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on December 20th, 2012

Another year is almost over and what a year it has been. The Queen celebrated 60 years on the throne, London hosted a very successful Olympic Games, a Korean pop star has become the most viewed video on YouTube, a man jumped from the edge of space, Obama was re-elected as the President of the United States and there’s a royal baby on the way!

As we prepare to put our ‘out of office’ on and go spend some quality time with friends and family, we thought we’d look back at which of the more famous people on this earth got engaged or tied the knot in the past twelve months…

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake tied the knot in Italy.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds got married in South Carolina – and Florence (and the Machine) performed three songs for the happy couple.

Drew Barrymore wed Will Kopelman and the bride wore Chanel.

Kate Bosworth found happiness with Michael Polish and tweeted a photo of her ring.

Fashion favourite Grace Woodward wed her man and tweeted her happiness.

True Blood star Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell, of Billy Elliott fame, tied the knot.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux made it official – no news of a wedding date yet though…

Singer Kelly Clarkson got a big yellow rock on her finger.

Anne Hathaway, Holly Valance and Cat Deeley wed their men over the same weekend!

Burberry chief creative officer Christopher Bailey got engaged to actor Simon Woods and is reported to have wed in an intimate ceremony at the Chelsea Register Office.

Bryan McFadden and Vogue Williams said I do.

Model Poppy Delevingne became engaged after adorable and unique proposal.

Singer Adele wed her Simon in secret.

Avril Lavigne got engaged to Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger.

Actor Matthew McConaughey married his long-term partner Camila Alves.

McFly’s Tom Fletcher wed childhood sweetheart Giovanna Falcone in London.

Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied tied the knot in an intimate ceremony.

And Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are set to marry any day now…

Have a wonderful holiday!

Kelly Clarkson sports yellow canary diamond engagement ring – and here’s how to copy the style

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on December 17th, 2012

We’ve previously written about the rise in popularity of coloured precious stones for engagement rings, and now US singer Kelly Clarkson has become the latest to join the brides-to-be sporting a different style on her ring finger.

Kelly (30) announced her engagement to 35-year-old talent manager Brandon Blackstock at the weekend, sharing her joy on Twitter writing: “I’m engaged!!!! I wanted y’all to know!! Happiest night of my life last night! I am so luck and am with the greatest man ever.”

And as all ecstatic newly engaged ladies, Kelly also tweeted a photo of her canary yellow diamond rock:

Poppy Delevingne engaged after adorable and unique proposal

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on October 10th, 2012

THIS is what every girl in love wishes for right? For her love to ask her to marry them in a truly clever, personal and unique way…

Model Poppy Delevingne has certainly hit the jackpot in the boyfriend/fiancé department. The 25 year old model broke the news of her engagement yesterday by tweeting a photo of a bespoke jewellery box by Anya Hindmarch. The photo shows pictures of the happy couple and two small drawers embossed with the words ‘Happy Days’ and ‘Love Me’, with the key question ‘Will You Marry Me’ engraved on the inside of the lid. Move over Tiffany, this is now the box every girl wants!

Her beau since 2007, James Cook had drafted the designer to create this one-of-a-kind piece, which he presented to his fellow blonde girlfriend yesterday. We can only presume that the engagement ring, which Poppy has yet to reveal, was sat in one of the compartments… Congratulations!

Jennifer Aniston flashes her HUGE engagement ring. Is Hollywood going a bit OTT with their diamonds?

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on October 9th, 2012

Known for her low-key style, the sheer size of Jennifer Aniston’s engagement ring has sent shock-waves through the wedding and celebrity press this morning. Is it just too big and too flashy? The ring, which to me looks like a giant sweetie, is one massive eight-carat emerald cut diamond. The ring, seen here in US Weekly, is more the size of a cocktail ring than a traditional engagement ring.

With this Jennifer and Justin Theroux have gone done the route of many fellow Hollywood stars recently, opting for size rather than something that would look good wearing on a day-to-day basis.

Here are some other engagement rings currently on show in celebville: Angelina Jolie (still engaged), Skyfall singer Adele (already married), Jennifer Lopez (unconfirmed), Nicole Richie (married) and Kim Kardashian (famously divorced).

Jenny with the rock: Is Jennifer Lopez engaged?

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on October 8th, 2012

Jennifer “J Lo” Lopez set of engagement rumours after she was snapped wearing a rather large sparkler on her ring finger while attending the Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week.

The singer and actress has been dating her back-up dancer Casper Smart since 2011, after going public only a few months after splitting from her husband of seven years, singer Marc Anthony.

The two are said to be head over heels in love with each other, and despite J Lo fighting off the engagement rumours, we have a feeling a wedding may soon be on the cards for Jenny from the Block. The couple have been enjoying each other’s company in the romantic city of Paris, France recently. Which better place to pop the question?

Worst proposal EVER. Man fakes his own death – only to resurrect. Then proposes

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on September 16th, 2012

I can think of a lot of horrible ways to propose and be proposed to, but this has to be one of the worst proposals in history. Ever.

Russian Alexei wanted to ask his girlfriend Irena to marry him in a way that they would never forget – and to test her love for him. So armed with a script writer, a director, stuntmen and make-up artists, Alexei staged his own death in a car crash.

Having arranged to meet at a certain time at a certain location, Irena arrived at the scene only to be told by the ‘medics’ that her boyfriend had passed away.

Alexei then miraculously came back to life and proposed. What baffles me the most is that Irena ACTUALLY SAID YES. Apparently the couple are happily married today, but Irena did say she ‘could have killed him’ for this stunt.

Engagement rumours after Mischa Barton is spotted wearing a huge diamond ring

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on September 13th, 2012

Could former O.C. actress Mischa Barton be the next celeb to head down the aisle? On Wednesday, Barton was spotted wearing a massive diamond ring on her left hand which of course has sparked engagement rumours.

She has only been going out with her boyfriend Sebastian Knapp for two months, but by the looks of it things could get very serious, very soon. In photos on Mail Online, Barton is seen in Dublin, Ireland, smiling knowingly as she débuts her big rock. Do you have something to tell us?

It’s official: Kate Bosworth tweets photo of engagement ring

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on September 6th, 2012

Actress Kate Bosworth has silenced all rumours surrouding her alleged engagement to Michael Polish by tweeting a photo of herself with a rock on her finger.

The black and white photo of the 29-year-old was accompanied with the tweet: “This photo was taken by my husband-to-be! Thank you all for the wonderful engagement wishes… We feel truly blessed.”

Kate has been dating Michael, 41, since July 2011 and “accidentally” let slip news of the couple’s engagement in an online travel piece about their romantic trip to Seoul, South Korea for Vogue.com in August.

Congrats Kate!

Brad Pitt’s leading ladies: How does ex Jennifer Aniston’s ring compare to the one Brad presented Angelina Jolie with?

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on August 23rd, 2012

While we patiently await to find out the exact details of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s forthcoming nuptials, everyone is currently talking about Brad’s former wife, Jennifer Aniston’s engagement ring from her new beau Justin Theroux. But so far Jen is being very secretive about her ring – and its design. Reportedly it’s a six carat diamond and platinum sparkler worth $150,000.

But there are two engagement rings we can look closer at: The future Mrs Pitt and that of the former Mrs Pitt.

Jennifer’s ring from 1999 was a swirl design diamond and platinum ring. A round brilliant cut diamond ring was encased by a spiral of smaller individual diamonds, said to be reminiscent of a heart and to symbolise eternity. Oh Brad, how wrong were you.

The engagement ring Brad presented Angelina with not so long ago, is also the choice of Mr Pitt, and it is said he worked with the jeweller for over a year to make it perfect. The emerald cut centre stone sits alongside diamond baguettes, with each diamond being of the highest quality.

Personally I’d not choose any of Brad’s choices for myself (Note to my future husband, more Jessica Biel/Kate Moss thank you), but if you like the style you can get very similar rings at QVC.
