Will you iMarry? Man proposes to girlfriend with iPad2

By Elisabeth on March 29th, 2011

We know that the love for gadgets can be strong, especially when the gadget in question comes from the mighty House of Apple. These cult-like devices can also play a part in securing the ever-lasting love of your sweetheart.

Eager to share the happy news of his engagement Californian Jordan C. wrote in to 9to5mac, to let tell them how magical the iPad2 really can be.

Jordan had bought an iPad2 and had it engraved with “Will You Marry Me?” for his then-girlfriend, Jessica. He then took Jessica to the National Redwood Forest in Northern California and got down on one knee under one of the largest trees in the world.

Jessica’s answer? “YES, now give me my iPad!!”

Celebrity inspired holiday engagements increase the price of UK weddings

By Elisabeth on March 22nd, 2011

Remember where you were when your husband-to-be got down on one knee? If it was somewhere overseas rather than in your flat in East London you are not alone. Research by travelmatch.co.uk reveals that Brits are following in the footsteps of celebs like Kate Moss and Lily Allen – hey even Prince William and Catherine Middleton – by getting engaged abroad. Four out of every ten couples have apparently said ‘yes’ to marriage proposals while on holiday.

Perhaps inspired by celebrities, the study also found that 53% of men compete against their peers for the ultimate engagement, which adds to the desire to propose in increasingly impressive locations. So is it all a game?

A healthy dose of competition has never harmed anyone, and it turns out that 2/3 of the men asked say that popping the question was the most nerve wracking thing they have ever done.

However, this added focus on making the engagement moment a memorable event is also pushing up the total cost for weddings. The average holiday engagement adds more than a quarter to the overall marriage costs, which means that the average wedding teamed with a holiday engagement now totals to just over £20,000.

Here at Bridalwave we are always discussing the figures of getting married (both how to fit into that dress before the big day and financially speaking). While some of us would rather splurge on the engagement ring – you will be wearing this every day after all – than a fancy holiday, others do think the logistics of the engagement sets the scene for what is to come.

What do you think Bridalwave readers? Should getting engaged be as lavish as the wedding itself?

Do you tell him you hate your engagement ring?

By Elisabeth on February 18th, 2011

Whether you’ve been together for years or have had a whirlwind romance, you will forever remember the moment when the love of your life pops the question. Everything is perfect: the setting, the words, the ring… Oh yes, the ring… What if the ring isn’t right?

The engagement ring is something you will be wearing from now until forever – it will become part of you – so what if the sight of it repulses you? OK, it will take a lot for a ring to make you turn on your heels and run away, but the burning question is: do you tell your husband-to-be the truth and risk hurting his feelings or do you risk spending the rest of your life looking down at a sparkler you hate?

First of all you should have dropped more hints about what type of jewellery you like and hate early on in the relationship. If you’re not vocal about your preferences, chance is that he’s not going to magically pick the right ring when the time comes. Do you keep a blog and are secretly hoping your boyfriend will get down on one knee without you knowing? Make sure you blog lots about rings! He might head there for inspiration…

Speaking from personal experience, men might also turn to those who would know: the best friend, so make sure she – or he – knows what your taste in diamonds is. Rectangular, round, oval, princess, marquise, pear, and droplet – the cut makes all the difference when it comes to this particular ring.

If not, hope that he proposes with a plastic ring or a hula hoop so that you can head to the jeweller and choose the perfect engagement ring together.

Now, the trickiest situation will be if the ring is a family heirloom – like Kate Middleton recently experienced – yet it is something you would rather not be seen wearing. The solution? Simply say you wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing such a valuable item every day and keep it somewhere safe and only wear it on very special occasions. Then buy a shiny new diamond for everyday wear – clever eh!

Or simply go for the safest choice. Make it known that you want to get married and choose the ring together and forget about the ‘surprise’ element of getting engaged. Picking the ring together can be just as romantic.

Been in this situation? What did you do?

Kate Moss engaged! [Photos]

By Elisabeth on February 9th, 2011

Can’t believe we haven’t mentioned it yet – Kate Moss has been seen sporting a gorgeous sparkler and is reportedly to marry to rocker boyfriend Jamie Hince.

According to MarieClaire the vintage ring is inspired by the one worn by Moss’ idol and twenties icon, Zelda Fitzgerald – wife of novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald.

As Kate is rumoured to be thinking about a roaring ’20s themed wedding we expect to see flapper fever hit the UK wedding scene this year.

Celebrity engagements over the festive season

By Elisabeth on January 6th, 2011

Christmas and New Year is a popular time to get engaged, and celebrities are no exception! During the festive season, when we were busy drinking  mulled wine and eating mince pies, announcements of engagements flooded in from several starlets. Following a year of many celebrity divorces, we are thrilled that so many lucky ladies (and men!) will be tying the knot in 2011.

Joining Kate and Wills in nuptial bliss are Reese Witherspoon, Natalie Portman, Leann Rimes, Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding, Ginnifer Goodwin, David Tennant, and Hugh Hefner. And not to forget, Lily Allen who is to marry “the love of [her] life” Sam Cooper. We’re especially delighted to hear Lily’s news after her very trialling year.

This also means that we get to ‘oooh’ and ‘aaah’ over engagement rings (Reese’s is said to be worth a whopping $250k!), wedding dresses and celebrity wedding bashes in the months ahead. Not to forget the forthcoming royal wedding!

Congratulations to all!

Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr secretly tie the knot and we look at other couples who have done the same

By Andrea Petrou on July 23rd, 2010

A million hearts broke this morning when news began filtering through that Orlando Bloom had secretly wed his model girlfriend Miranda Kerr in a secret ceremony.

The couple, who announced their engagement last month were forced to confirm their wedding rumour after news leaked out that Miranda pulled out of an appearance at Australian department store, David Jones, this week.

She said in a statement: “David Jones very graciously released me during this period so we could celebrate an intimate ceremony and honeymoon together.”

However, they aren’t the only couple who have shied away from the press and surprised us with sudden engagements and marriages.

One engagement, which caught us totally off-guard was the one between Twilight star Jamie Campbell Bower and Harry Potter starlet Bonnie Wright who announced their whirlwind engagement in the spring. And last month Megan Fox surprised everyone when she announced that she had finally tied the knot with her long term fiance Brian Austin Green in Hawaii. She didn’t release any wedding details, but it surprised the media at the time as it was thought the couple had split.

Another couple who shunned Hollywood was Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem who fled to the Bahamas for a quiet intimate wedding. Penelope wore John Galliano but we’re not sure if she invited her best friend Salma Hayek.

And even Katie Price and Alex Reid took some time out from the public eye (although at the time she was being filmed by ITV2) when they shloped off quietly to Vegas to tie the knot. However, their church blessing and UK party was anything but quiet. A media circus entailed and this time around Katie wore a white handmade dress with crystals, which was just as big as the pink frock she chose to wed Peter Andre.

Although it wasn’t a surprise wedding, Piers Morgan opted for privacy when he wed his long term partner Celia Walden in Oxford. However, like Katie and Alex, the couple made it up to friends when they had a huge party to celebrate their vows a month later.

View the gallery below to see all the lucky couples.

Diamondthrills offers brides the chance to hire diamonds for their big day

By Andrea Petrou on October 28th, 2009

diamonds.jpgIt seems that companies are waking up to the fact that we’re in a midst of credit crunch and that we have to tighten our corsets when it comes to our bridal budget.

Following on from our news about a designer shoe hiring service, we’ve just been told about the UK’s first diamond jewellery rental website.

Diamondthrills is aimed at women who want to wear that expensive piece of jewellery for a special occasion but can’t afford it, especially brides who want to be adorned with genuine diamonds on their wedding day (unfortunately we’re not talking about the engagement ring here.)

It offers a range of diamond earrings, pendants, necklaces, bangles, bracelets and tiaras, all available for hire at prices that start at £50 per week.

In addition, you’ll also have the peace of mind of knowing that loaned jewellery is insured whilst in their possession, and delivery to and from the customer is secure and free.

Visit the website now for that extra bridal bling.

Cred Jewellery launches ethical engagement rings

By Andrea Petrou on October 22nd, 2009

Cred ring.jpgIf you’re a green goddess whose boyfriend has proposed without a ring, then you’ll love these engagement rings by Cred Jewellery.

The jeweller has designed a range of eco friendly engagement rings, which are certified as socially and environmentally responsible.

All the engagement rings in the range are made of platinum and 18ct fair trade gold sourced by Oro Verde, a supplier of ethically sourced precious metals. CRED also says its gold is produced without mercury or cyanide and their precious stones are traceable from mine to retail.

We’ve had a look at some of their rings, and they are ethically gorgeous, especially the 18ct white gold Princess ring (pictured).

The range doesn’t come cheap with prices starting at £1,010, but at least you can tell your other half its for the good of the environment.

Footballer Jermaine Jenas and fiancee Ellie Penfold celebrate their engagement with an extravagant party

By Andrea Petrou on October 7th, 2009

jermaine_jenas.jpgWe couldn’t have planned this announcement for a better time considering our new wag wedding series. This time it’s a true wag style engagement party.

Tottenham Hotspur and England midfielder Jermaine Jenas hosted an extravagant ceremony to celebrate his engagement to fiancee Ellie Penfold.

The 25-year-old football star invited his Tottenham team-mates to the party in London, which included an appearance by rapper Nelly, 34, who serenaded the couple with his singing.

With an engagement as extravagant as this, we dread to see the wedding but we’ll have to wait a good few years as the couple say they are not planning to wed until 2011.

Wedding rings to make your friends sparkle with envy

By Andrea Petrou on August 24th, 2009

Bespoke wedding ringIf your struggling to find an engagement/wedding ring with a little bit of a difference, then you may be pleased to hear about these new designs by Kimberley Selwood.

The British designer has come up with a range of creations that will help your ring stand out in a crowd, especially if your other friends have decided to get married/engaged at around the same time as you.

We love the bespoke trilogy diamond wedding and engagement set (pictured), which has a beautiful platinum ring, with three diamonds. Underneath it sits a band with tiny diamonds.

Brides that want something that little bit more special can also ask this lovely designer to help them create their own ring including selecting your diamonds or gemstones and setting.

And to the ladies out there who are waiting in anticipation for that special question, we suggest you leave the website open for him when he gets home (yes I will be guilty of doing this). After all we’re only showing him what it is we like.

How long will your engagement last?

By AbiSilvester on July 14th, 2009

engagement-ring.jpgFor many people, being engaged is more important than actually getting married. It shoes a certain amount of willing from both partners, costs nothing, doesn’t involve any fancy clothing and shuts people up when they ask about when he’s going to ‘pop the question’. And for some, the arrangement never goes beyond that.

A campaign by Scottish tipple Glavya is currently searching for the couple with the most long-standing engagement in the UK, in a bid to give them the final nudge needed to propell them down the aisle. If you think you might qualify, email them at glayva@dada.co.uk and tell them how long you’ve been ‘putting it off’. And if you’re revealed to be the nationa’s longest-affianced couple, they’ll reward you with some free drinks at your reception. Marvelous!

In the meantime, I want to know how long you’re planning your engagement period to last. Vote in the box below:

I can haz wedding? Marriage proposal lolcat

By AbiSilvester on May 13th, 2009

i-can-has-marriage.jpgGeeks sometimes have a hard time communicating their feelings, and what could be scarier for the socially awkward than proposing marriage?

Lucky for them, the internet is here to save the day. I’ve seen some guys resort to popping the question on YouTube (hard to get out of that one once it’s gone viral!) and have heard tales of Twitter proposals, too. But an even whackier solution is to adopt the current vernacular of ‘lolcats’ and say it with an image macro – just like this one. For the uninitiated, the charming sentiment expressed in the image can be roughly translated as ‘Dear Loretta. I would be honoured to take your hand in marriage – John. Look, here’s the ring (I’m sorry it isn’t a mouse).
