Have weddings been affected by the credit crunch?

By admin on June 24th, 2008

pounds.JPGEverywhere we turn we’re confronted by news of the credit crunch affecting yet another area of our lives. So, it’s hardly surprising that the wedding market is taking a good, hard look at itself. A survey conducted by the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) has found that there is no increase in wedding cancellations due to the economic climate but a little less than half of respondents did find that wedding spending was decreasing. More than half said that couples were avoiding Saturday premiums by getting married on Friday or Sunday which sounds like an easy money-saving tactic to me!

Debenhams offers 70k wedding insurance plan

By admin on February 8th, 2008

pounds1.JPGWedding insurance is probably one of the least romantic parts of wedding planning but if you’re forking out the cash, you should make sure your deposits and final payments are fully refundable in case of any unforeseen circumstances. Debenhams have raised their insurance cover to a whopping £70,000, making it the highest level of cover available in the UK. The Diamond Plus policy costs £330 online and £354 over the phone, in comparison to Gold cover for £55 for cover up to £30,000.

So who’s spending all the money then? Debenhams say ‘many enquiries are from the Asian community, where elaborate ceremonies with many guests – often flown in from overseas – push the costs up way above that of more modest ceremonies.’

Celeb weddings for less with MoneyMagpie.com

By admin on January 28th, 2008

moneymagpie.JPGThough the average wedding may cost around £17,000, that figure is eclipsed by the staggering amounts spent on a WAG* wedding where costs regularly spiral into six figure sums – Steven Gerrard and Alex Curren were reported to have spent £200,000 on theirs. Does that mean you have to spend the same? Of course not! After all, a wedding is essentially a party where you sign a certificate and celebrate your love and you shouldn’t have to pay a premium for that.

Gadget E-Nups at PIXmania – non-enforceable prenups for the techno generation

By admin on December 6th, 2007

Pixmania.JPGHow much is your new phone worth to you? Do you reckon you’ll be arguing over that widescreen TV if you split? Gadget retailer Pixmania.com has been researching and suggests there is a new record number of divorces and splits over gadgets – enough to warrant a special pre-nup to protect your gadgetry. With couples owning more than £1043 of electricals and one in ten spending more than £1500 every year on gadgets, they’re aiming to offer couples emotional and financial protection.

“Together with the house and car, gadgets are the new battleground,” says Vanessa Lloyd Platt, leading matrimonial divorce lawyer from Lloyd Platt & Co. Solicitors. “English courts do not like deciding how people should divide their gadgets, but where they do, evidence of who bought the item or a document outlining who will get what, will be very strong evidence. I believe written agreements like the E-Nup will stop the increase in gadget wars once and for all.”

present.jpgAs you’re haemorrhaging money on the biggest day of your life and getting to the point where you just don’t ever click on that ‘view balance’ button, you can be happy that apparently Britons are big spenders when it comes to wedding gifts. An article from Sky News today says the average spend on a wedding present in the UK is £43, bearing in mind your close friends and rellies will probably go up to around the £70 mark, you do the math. For what you are about to receive, may the Lord/Buddha/higher spiritual force make you truly thankful.

British Tory party propose tax incentives to encourage couples to wed

By admin on July 12th, 2007

pounds1.JPGThe Tory party have got their eyes on marriage as a key party of tax relief benefits should they ever get in power again. The tax break is a whopping £20 a week (that’s roughly £1000 a year) and might help couples who have one partner stay at home to care for children or other relatives.

The report states that the tax breaks would “indicate that marriage is valued because of its benefits to children and wider society”. £20 must go quite a long way in some parts of the country if they think that’s an incentive… However, as marriage is in constant decline, according to national statistics, it seems of little importance to many of today’s couples. Plus with the average cost of a wedding coming in at £17,000, it’ll take 16 years to break even. [via BBC]

Would you get wed to take advantage of an extra £20 a weeK? Thought not…
