Frock Horror #111: the puffa dress

By admin on April 18th, 2008

FH111.JPG
The bodice is quite nice and fitted but the designer has unleashed the madness on that skirt. I can only imagine that this dress comes with its own air pump – rather like a wearable air bed – a quick shot of air and voila! Volume! The plumped up underskirt is bad enough but the quilted, ruched flounces are likely to be found with a sleeping flowergirl esconced in the folds by the end of the day. You can get it at St Pucchi.

80% of voters weren’t keen on last week’s Wicked Witch ruffle dress. I wonder what you’ll make of the puffa?!

Frock Horror #110: Wicked Witch ruffle dress

By admin on April 11th, 2008

Frock horror110.JPG
I suppose in the eighties this would have been understated. As it is the Disney style Wicked Witch ruffled collar is a tad OTT and the bow largely unnecessary. Let’s just be grateful it doesn’t have shoulder pads. The skirt meanwhile is rather unoffensive and would probably look pretty good with a strapless bodice. Alas, that just didn’t happen and this is what we’re left with.

Last week’s poppy dress got a massive 83% nay. Commenter Heleonie sums up it up with ‘ridiculous’. What do you think of this week’s offering?

Frock Horror #109: the red poppy dress

Frock Horror 109.JPG

We can thank Orla for this find. Doesn’t it just make you want to run through fields of flowers disguised as a basket of poppies? What do you mean, no? It’s perfect for picnics though, after all, everyone will think you’ve come as the tablecloth.

78% weren’t keen on last week’s coffee and lace dress. If you want to vote on this week’s style, you can do so now.

Frock Horror #108 – coffee and lace gown

By admin on March 28th, 2008

Frock Horror 108.JPGEven though I’m not a fan of cut away ruching, the shape of this dress isn’t particulaly offensive. What isn’t ok however is the heavy black lace on both the bodice and skirt that further competes with the coffee coloured froth. It’s just too much, Romantica!

Do you think it’s deserving of Frock Horrordom or would you save it? Cast your vote!

Frock Horror #107 – the fur tail wedding dress

By admin on March 21st, 2008

Frock Horror 107.JPG
Well, isn’t this, er, exotic. And by exotic, I mean ugh! And also: aargh! Made from fake mink fur, it’s a backless number that closely resembles sewn pelts tacked together with what is either a matching wrap or a tail. It costs $800 if you really, really must.

Last week 87% of our stylish readers agreed the mini dress was a horror. You can cast your votes on this week’s outfit below.

Frock Horror #106 – the uber mini dress

By admin on March 14th, 2008

Frock Horror 106.JPG
Any kind of dress that flashes the tops of your stockings has to be met with a resounding no. Especially a wedding dress. What kind of message would this send out? I actually think the bodice is quite pretty but I’m still distracted by the mountain of tulle at the waist and, if you wore this, presumably you’d have to have a collection of pageboys dressed like this. Where does the madness end?

When I asked you to vote on last week’s red dress, 61% of agreed it was a frock horror. What do you think of this week’s offering?

Frock Horror #105 – the red dress

By admin on March 7th, 2008

Frock Horror 105.JPG
Occasionally I get a dress for this section that I don’t find spectactularly offensive, but still not exactly all that pleasing and I feel like I have to come up with a solution to make the dress better. I’m all for coloured dressed so I have no problem with the raspberry shade but I do find the bodice a little too raspberry ripple for my tastes. So, here’s what I suggest, Veromia, make it either raspberry or white, but not both. Easy!

Take a vote on it below! Last week, just 64% thought the embroidered dress was a frock horror with 36% thinking it was pretty – that was a close one!

Frock Horror #104 – the embroidered within an inch of its life dress

By admin on February 29th, 2008

Frock%20Horror%20104.JPG
Golly, this is a busy dress isn’t it? All that red embroidery (sorry, ‘ruby’) on the ‘spun gold’ tulle is rather an eye sore but not nearly as awful as that skirt which appears to stop at the knee then has another one growing beneath. Fortunately it looks a whole lot better in white (see pics at Sophia Tolli here)

By the way, last week 96% of you agreed that the shiny dress was wrong. I’m glad to have such stylish company! You can vote on this week’s frock below.

Frock Horror #103 – retro goes wrong

By admin on February 22nd, 2008

Frock%20Horror%20103.JPG
Whilst trawling eBay for our dress of the week I happened across this gown. The more charitable amongst us would call it ‘vintage’ or ‘retro’. Fortunately, I’m not that person. It’s listed as a Pronovias dress. I’m not sure if that is a lie or it’s just really old and long before the days when they started producing stunning bridalwear. Still, it’s only £4.99 and you’d probably be doing a public service by buying it.

93% of you thought that last week’s Angel Sanchez dress was horrid too. Vote on this week’s dress below – it’s easy, just check a button and press vote!

Frock Horror #102 – the roman blinds dress

By admin on February 15th, 2008

Frock%20Horror%20102.JPG
Really this dress is great. if it were roman blinds. If the bottom half had been chopped off, strung on a nice pole and hung vertically. Wouldn’t it be so chic? Unfortunately it’s the bottom half of a wedding dress, tacked on haphazardly with gaping holes and in triplicate. Angel Sanchez is the designer, fingers crossed for a range of window coverings soon.

Give this dress your vote!

Frock Horror #101 – the ultimate ugly dresses

Frock%20Horror%20101.JPG
Readers, after 100 dresses of the foulest order, it should come as no suprise to you that there will be some true horrors waiting for you as you take those first steps towards finding The One. No, not him, the dress. So, I’ve put together a little 101 for you, with some of our ‘unfavourites’ of the past two years in the hope that your style can be saved and you don’t have to look back with regret.

1. Looking to the catwalk for inspiration? You might want to think again after eyeing some creations by fashion luminaries
The rules: Let the catwalk inspire you but don’t even think about wearing these creations. If they make the models look bad, it isn’t a good sign.

Frock Horror #100 – who ate my skirt?

By admin on February 1st, 2008

Frock%20Horror%20100.JPG
You know how it is… you get dressed, you’re looking good, you look in the mirror and you realise, oh my gosh, someone or something ate my dress! Doesn’t that always happen at the worst time, like your wedding?

Last week, 77% of you loathed that split-to-the-navel dress. You can vote on this week’s dress by checking a button here:

Frock Horror #99 – the split-to-the-navel dress

By admin on January 25th, 2008

Frock%20Horror%2099.JPG
Underwear as outerwear may have been vaguely fashonable once (slip dresses mid-nineties, anyone?) but the lingerie look on a wedding dress should never have made the cut. And oh what a cut this dress has with its split-to-the-navel front, padded cups and see-through lace. I’ve seen more material on a basque. Still, at least it has a skirt, not that I like that either but at least it’s there. You can let me know what you think of it by voting.

Last week’s saddlebag dress got a high score for the ick factor – 95% of you agreed it was a true horror.

Frock Horror #98 – the saddlebag dress

By admin on January 18th, 2008

Frock%20Horror%2098.JPG
Pronovias, as well all know, are usually so on the ball with their stylish, slinky dresses so it’s a suprise really that the ball ran away with them on this one. It’s stiff, puffy in all the wrong places (hello! Hips like saddlebags, anyone?) and drowning in that print. Mostly, it is, too use a wonderfully non-technical phrase, a bit ick.

In case you were wondering, last week’s ‘sexy’ dress scored 94% of the vote firmly esconcing it in the Frock Horror hall of shame forever. 6% of you, however, are terrifically kind…
