Get the look: Jane Austen wedding style

By AbiSilvester on April 7th, 2009

jane-austen-wedding.jpgWeddings and Jane Austen have always been inextricably linked, but there’s a definite trend for all-things-Austen going on right now, so if you’re getting married soon, why not play up to the theme? You might not want to go all-out with horse-drawn carriages to the reception (if you do, that can of course be arranged!) but if you like the style, there are plenty of ways you can introduce a regency style into your event.

You can do this in the smallest ways, with Regency accessories such as lace parasols and gloves, and I rather like this Austen-themed stationery like this ‘engaged woman’ card by Etsy seller letterarypress.

Wedding Dress Gallery: High-waisted wedding dresses

By AbiSilvester on April 3rd, 2009

If I was asked to name one feature that really stands out in this season’s collections – from the catwalk right down to the smallest designers – I’d have to go with the trend for high-waisted dresses. Grecian, empire-line and contemporary styles with raised waistlines are all making a big comeback in bridal fashion, and whether you prefer a full, slimline or shorter skirt, this style is an option for you. Ideal for the more petite bride, it elongates your silhouette, drawing the gaze upwards.

Get The Look: Carrie Bradshaw style for (a bit) less

By AbiSilvester on April 1st, 2009

carrie-bradshaw-wedding-dresses.jpgGiven what actually happened on her ill-fated ‘wedding’ day I can’t help being surprised at how many brides-to-be want to emulate Carrie Bradshaw’s look! But putting aside all that romantic stuff for a minute it’s not difficult to see why so many of us fell for the frock.

So many, in fact, that it’s still impossible to buy the Vivienne Westwood dress which sold out yesterday. Until now, we’d only clocked high-end designer styles similar to Carrie’s dress, but fear not: you can get a very reasonable homage to the style for $1125. It’s by Sarah Danielle Bridal and it’s remarkably similar to the dress worn by SJP in the film. Follow the jump for a back view of the dress.

Missed the ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ dress on Net-a-Porter?

By AbiSilvester on March 30th, 2009

carrieVivienneWestwoodGoldLabel.jpgIf you were hoping to pick up a copy of Carrie Bradshaw’s ill-fated (but damned pretty) champagne silk wedding dress on Net-a-Porter today I’m afraid you’re going to have to look for an alternative: the Vivienne Westwood Gold Label gown featured in the recent Sex and the City movie sold out in minutes, costing each buyer a punishing £4,530.

But don’t fret: you need not head down to the thrift shop for a vintage effort just yet; many designers are going in for an equally extravagant, gathered silk look if you can afford their prices.

Follow the jump to see which designers have got ‘Carried away’ this season!

Pick your period with Circa Vintage Bride

By AbiSilvester on March 25th, 2009

period-bride.jpgI’m quite into the idea of ‘weddings through the ages’ at the moment, and think it’s fascinating to see how what was considered the height of fashion one decade was often completely out of favour the next.

If I had my pick of any period in history to get married in,I think I’d have to choose the 1930s, as the silver-screen glamour and decadence of the age lends itself so well to a special occasion. But others are keen to evoke the blooming, voluminous styles of the ’50s, or adopt the intricate splendour of Victorian brides.

Get the look: simple silhouettes

By AbiSilvester on March 11th, 2009

brides2 copy.jpgGetting married doesn’t have to mean buying into a world of frills and lace; if it’s simple elegance you’re looking for in a dress, there’s plenty of choice out there if you’re willing to look for it. You’ll need to dig through a lot of fluff and meringue before you find the ideal style for you, but whether you’re going for a high end designer dress or an off-the-peg number, simpler dresses can be flattering, stylish and cool.

So here’s my pick of this season’s off-the-peg dresses that use time-honoured tailoring techniqus to enhance your silhouette with minimal fuss and not a scrap of lace or chiffon in sight.

Follow the jump for details on the dresses.

Want to have a hip wedding? Get yourself a ‘tache…

By AbiSilvester on November 10th, 2008

wedding moustaches.jpgOnly a week ago I was boggling at the fact that some brides are choosing to wear fairy wings for their big day, but having since learnt that the latest craze for weddings is moustaches, I’m getting the distinct impression that “silly” is becoming the watchword for more and more couples. That is, at least, if you believe Offbeat Bride, who insists that moustachioed wedding parties are all the rage. And if you don’t believe her, you can check out the evidence in her Flickr pool.

Sophisticated bridal suit outfit from Principles

By admin on July 4th, 2008

wedding suit principles.jpg
I used to think that bridal suits were a little bit frumpy, but I was very very wrong. Whether you’re a mature bride or just looking for something that doesn’t involve a skirt then this simply stunning suit from Principles is a great way to get sophisticated style without a huge budget.

Part of the gorgeous Nouveau collection, this ivory suit is streamlined to create a great looking silhouette. The high waisted wide leg trousers are great for creating a touch of Old Hollywood glamour to a garment that’s often dull. I’ve teamed the suit with a pretty 1920s inspired top from the collection to add some sparkle to the sleek look.

Royal Ascot is back in full swing this week and if you’re lucky enough to be whisked away to such a prestigious event by your prospective new beau then you’ll want to dress to impress. Everyone knows that the ladies’ fashion of the races is big business, so I’ve put together an outfit that’s sophisticated, appropriate and still flattering.

Get the Look: Stylish suits

By admin on December 11th, 2007

GTL%20suit.JPG
If you aren’t the kind of bride who wants to wear a white dress, or any dress for that matter, then this elegant suited look might be for you. This pure white Oscar de la Renta suit is fitted without being clinging, has a flattering semi A-line skirt, three large buttons on the jacket and an oversized collar for a hint of glamour and firmly ensuriring it won’t be mistaken as summer workwear. Pair it with ivory silk satin slingbacks with Swarovski crystals details for a touch of glamour, white wrist length gloves in leather and finish with a sterling silver bead necklace as an updated take on pearls.

Get the Look: Art deco

By admin on December 7th, 2007

GTL%20artdeco.JPG
Flappers may have been making waves with new fashions in the 20s but weddings cut an altogether more elegant affair with dropped waists, pleats and bands of pearls all popular features in wedding fashions. For an Art Deco inspired wedding outfit, start off with this gown with a dropped beaded waist, cowl neck and puddle train, it’s slinky, sexy and stylish. Hair jewellery reconstructed from vintage pieces adds a touch of sparkle to hairstyles. Make pearls the basis for a chunky bracelet – this one has stunning crystal detailing too. Shoes should have a bar for that vintage look and these white satin t-bars should work well. Product info after the jump…

Get the Look: Tropicana

By admin on November 20th, 2007

GTL%20Tropicana.JPG
Though we may have a long dreary winter ahead of us, let’s look a bit further ahead with a tropical theme for a summer wedding or as the antithesis to that archetypal winter wedding of holly, frosty leaves and faux fur wraps. For this style to work, you’ve got to think hot, hot, hot! Kick off with a bright wedding dress in an uncompromising shade of reddish-orange. This is a classic A-line but it’s the colour that makes it special. Go for an island feel with a big flower in a dual shade for your hair. If you’re going to add in accessories, be careful not to overdo it – amber ties in the trend, silver cools it down but the shape of this necklace paired with the long earrings keeps it fresh. It will be hard to find a shoe to match this shade so either get a pair specially dyed or get searching now!

Get the Look: Swan Lake

By admin on November 2nd, 2007

GTL%20swan%20lake.JPG

One of the most famous of all ballets and with more white tull than you can shake a stick at, Swan Lake is full of inspiration for a winter wedding. I’ve picked out this gown, incidentally named ‘Swan Lake’, for its pretty fitted bodice and circle-cut layered skirt to give that ballerina look. Soft leather ballet slippers will give you comfort all day long and are perfect for dancing all night too. Add a graceful tiara with crystals for wow factor and finish with a smart little satin bag for your emergency tissues and lippy. Just make sure you have four of your own little cygnets in ballet shoes and puffy dresses to set off your own swan like gown. Product info after the cut…

Get the Look: Halloween wedding

By admin on October 30th, 2007

GTL%20Halloween.JPG
There are a surprising number of couples who get wed at Halloween and despite what you might think, no, they aren’t all Goths. No, they are pumpkin fanatics, spook chasers and those who like to indulge in fancy dress. Here’s what the bride should wear.

Don’t fall for the idea of wearing black to a Halloween wedding. Opt for a rich red velvet with a slight touch of orange instead like this corseted gown with a draped skirt in silk dupion. Suede is just as tactile as silk or satin, so pick up a pair of two-strap shoes with a four inch chunky heel. Cool and quirky clutch bags are a great addition to any wardrobe and you should definitely have one of these vintage-inspired styles. This clutch is made from red velvet and embroidered with orange and old gold sequins and seed beads. These earrings may be too OTT for your average wedding outfit but the purple and orange stones look great with this ensemble. Find out where to get them all after the cut.
