Wedding style from Net-A-Porter

By admin on June 1st, 2006

NetaporterchloeHave your guests turned to you for advice on what they should wear to your wedding? Got a troublesome relative who needs shopping help before you have to airbrush that horrid frock that is more pukey than Pucci out of the picture? Send them over to Net-A-Porter’s style guide for weddings. Featuring classic, beach and modern styles, they’ve put together looks for the bride, her mother, best friend and ex-girlfriends.

The grecian nude silk chiffon dress by Chloe at £1,159 is their pick for the bride’s best friend and it would be equally gorgeous as a bridesmaid dress too.

Pick of the Week – Manuel Mota

By admin on May 30th, 2006

Potw_manuelI love this dress by Manuel Mota. He began working with Pronovias forty years ago and now concentrates on more avant-garde styles. What drew me to this style was the tremendous amount of detail that has gone into its creation. Mota stops short of going over the top and leaves the dress both graceful and feminine. This cut is brilliant for wedding dresses too – the bodice flatters and the fishtail skirt allows the bride to actually move.

Shiromaku – Traditional wedding kimono

By admin on May 25th, 2006

Kimonowedding_whiteWeddings don’t necessarily mean big whte dresses and I’m always on the look out for styles from different cultures or cultural cross overs (hints are more than welcome too!) I thought I’d take a look at traditional Japanese weddings this time exploring the design of the kimono.

The wedding kimono is called the shiromaku meaning ‘white’ (shiro) and ‘pure’ (maku). The bride wears the white kimono during the marriage ceremony and at the reception adds a new colourful kimono called the uchikake. The uchikako is made from silk brocade. The most popular colour is red and it is finely embroidered with nature scenes such as flowers and cranes (the bird kind!)

Pick of the week – Vera Wang

By admin on May 23rd, 2006

PotwverawangIt seems that I’ve spent so much time bringing you the Frock Horrors or the Yay or Nay dresses which can swing to either love or hate that I’ve neglected to introduce the really fabulous gowns.

I’m going to start off with  a designer whose name has become synonymous with bridalwear – Vera Wang. Effortlessly elegant and timelessly glamorous, Wang’s gowns are lusted after by brides around the world. The pictured gown comes from her Luxe collection. It’s Vee front neck compliments the form fitted silk organdy gown and flows into a chantilly lace hem accented withpearl and crystal.

Get the Look – Informal

By admin on May 18th, 2006

Gtlinformal_1Every week I bring you a new theme for your wedding look. From a beach wedding to bows or feathers, I’m constantly on the search for fab ideas. This week I’m turning to an informal look that is ultra cool, feminine and picture perfect.

I’ve rejected floor length gowns and gone for a simply stylish three quarter length dress by Watters and Watters. The ivory satin layered dress is style 4062B and is $531 from House of Brides.com

Wednesday’s Yay or Nay

By admin on May 17th, 2006

YaynayflowersSpring is turning to summer and the blooms are starting to sprout… but does that mean you should plaster them all over your dress? Is this dress a Yay or Nay and why?

Last week’s gown was well received – you loved it’s drama – and one of you even correctly guessed the designer (well done Mai!). I didn’t want to sway your decisions by mentioing top names but yes, it was by Elie Saab.

Check out all the other Shiny Yay or Nays over at Trashionista, The Bag Lady, Catwalk Queen and Shoewawa.

Get the Look – pretty in pink

By admin on May 11th, 2006

Gtlpink6Pink is a great alternative to white and it presents such a huge variety of options. You can start off with the palest blush pink for a feminine, romantic picture postcard bride. Or you could go right up to full on hot pink to create a real statement.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match and hues but don’t go overboard with sequins and glitz – Barbara Cartland was never a style icon!

Dress ‘Aseel’ from a selection at Maggie Sottero.

Wednesday’s Yay or Nay

By admin on May 10th, 2006

YaynayeliesaabIt seems I may just have found a winner with last weeks Yay or Nay dress. You all gave the halterneck column Jessica McClintock dress a firm thumbs up!

Do excuse the frankly awful headdress, it’s completely unnecessary. Focus on the dress itself if you can! This week I’m bringing you a gown that says ‘Romance’. I feel the off white hue will flatter most skin types and the slight, almost silvery sheen will be perfect all hours of the day. The dress is full, floaty and has fine workmanship in the petals strewn all over the skirt and packed onto the strapless bodice. This time I’m going to hold back on the designer – I’ll let you know next week! Is it a yay or nay and why?

Don’t forget to check out our other Shiny Yay or Nays over at Trashionista, Shoewawa, Catwalk Queen and The Bag Lady. All our past Yay or Nays are here.

Get the Look – princess

By admin on May 4th, 2006

GtlprincessA few of you have mentioned the archetypal wedding dream in your comments – if you’re going to get married only once, you want to do it in a big way. And that means big dress, fairytale, prince charming – the works. So I’m turning this week’s Get the Look to dressing up princess stylie. We’re talking full skirts and crowns, glamour twinned with fun but absolutely no purple thrones or pumpkin carriages.

Yay or Nay Wednesday

By admin on May 3rd, 2006

Yaynay7Gosh you weren’t too keen on last week’s very shiny Pronovias gown though I have seen a pic of the dress in matte satin which does like a lot nicer. Still, it transpires you do like to see a firm distinction between business and wedding attire.

There isn’t anything big or clever about this week’s Yay or Nay. Instead the column dress is the picture of simplicity. I love the halter neck line and the ruched midriff with the long bias cut skirt. It would be ideal for a beach wedding. But I can’t help but think – dye it another colour and it could be any other evening dress. The designer is after the turn. So is it a yay or nay for you and why?

Wednesday is Shiny Media’s Yay or Nay day so check out Trashionista, Shoewawa, The Bag Lady and Catwalk Queen to see what they have to offer.
