Wedspiration Gallery: white dresses on the red carpet

By Andrea Thatcher on February 24th, 2009

Hello all! I’m finally back from New York Fashion Week. And, okay, a day or two to recharge and then cover the Oscars! While fashion week saw fewer wedding dresses than usual, the Oscars was a veritable bevy of wedding gown possibilities. The ladies came out in white in droves, droves I tell you! If you include all the oyster and silver options it was like a bridal fashion show. Penelope Cruz in vintage Balmain and Melissa George in Dolce & Gabbana were probably the most obviously bridal. But Marisa Tomei’s Versace Atelier pleated gown was one of my favorites of the night, and my friend is already trying to figure out how to make Tina Fey’s Zac Posen her wedding dress.

Check them all out in the gallery below, and vote for your fave in a poll here.

Every colour of the rainbow (and loads more too!) with the Alfred Angelo “Dream in Color” collection

By Hannah Kane on February 16th, 2009

alfred angelo dream in colour 1516.jpgI have to confess, love the Alfred Angelo website, I could literally spend hours looking at their “Dream in Color” collection. There’s twenty five gorgeous styles of wedding dress, each with different colour accents available- everything from trains to sashes to necklines can be personalised. You select your prefered dress style and then choose from the adjacent palette up to 55 colours and like magic the image changes to show you a representation. I’m particularly enamoured with this style, number 1516 (less than $999) which is made from lustre satin and features embroidered pearl and crystal beading, sequins and a lace-up corset back. The real focus is the stunning semi-cathedral train which looks fantastic in various colours. The best bit is you then get the bridesmaid’s dresses from the “Dream in Color” collection and everything matches perfectly!

Click after the jump to see the train in different colours!

Fairytale frock: dusky pink and ivory dress by Venus Bridals

By Hannah Kane on February 12th, 2009

853012 VII Venus.jpgFor the “more is more” bride (you know who you are and we salute you) have a look at this fabulous confection from the VII collection by Venus Bridals. It’s pure theatre with dusky pink organza and Royal taffetta, a scalloped ivory lace hem on the cathedral length train and a brooch embellishment. Phew! It’s the sort of dress that you could get married in in an Italian castle and not feel overshadowed by the architecture. Accessorize Italian style with big hair, big shoes and a big smile.

Style 853012 from the VII collection by Venus Bridals. Also available in French blue and ivory, ivory on ivory and white on white.

Voluminous Suzanne Ermann Fantasia dress

By Andrea Thatcher on February 10th, 2009

Suzanne Ermann dress.jpg

Suzanne Ermann’s ready-to-wedd collection is full of these circles created with satin edging on ruffling tulle overskirts, and it works particularly well on this cutaway-front dress. The short-in-front, long-in-back silhouette is straight off the fall 2008 runways of designers like Nina Ricci, Elie Saab and Balmain. It’s terrific for a more adventurous bride who wants to show off the killer stems she busted her butt for pre-wedding.

“Pravia” by San Patrick

By Hannah Kane on February 9th, 2009

Pravia by San Patrick cropped.jpg
If you’re not au fait with Spanish bridal gown designer San Patrick then I beg you to have a look at their website – the 2009 collection is absolutely gorgeous! This one, “Pravia” is an elegant strapless column, a small sweep train and a lovely modern corsage detail on the waist. On the website they show the dress styled on its own as well as layered over a lace chemise – a good idea for the ceremony, then you could whip it off for the party.

Take the plunge: Style 6778 from Alfred Sung

By Hannah Kane on February 6th, 2009

6778 front Alfred Sung cropped.jpgThis is a real gem of a dress – style 6778 from the Alfred Sung Signature Collection - and one that’s likely to get the groom feeling hot under the collar! The neckline plunges down into a deep ‘V’, all the better for showing off your jubblies, and there’s plenty of skin on show from behind too as it’s cut down to the small of the back. The pretty beading on the empire line and straps add a romantic touch.

Bargain Dress of the Week: J. Crew silk goddess dress – under $350

By Andrea Thatcher on February 6th, 2009

Bargain Dress of the Week J.jpg

I thought I’d bring a little feature from one of the other sites I edit, ShinyStyle, over here to Bridalwave – the Bargain Pick of the Week. Unlike the Ebay Bargain of the Week, these dresses will be brand new from a regular retailer. I’ll try to keep them under $1,000 because as well all know when it comes to wedding gowns, that qualifies as a bargain.

For our first Bargain Dress of the Week, I give you the J. Crew silk tricotine goddes long dress for a whopping full price of $325. It’s not even on sale! And it’s made of silk, when there are a *lot* of dresses over $1,000 out there posing as silk when they are not. Not, not, not.

This gown is fully lined and the skirt has that extra fabric look that is so romantic and graceful. I really can’t see anywhere they really skimped except possibly the straps, but if you’re looking for spaghetti straps one is the same as the next.

If you’re looking for a simple, elegant gown as so many brides are, then J. Crew has a whole selection fo these dresses for under $500 at their everyday prices. I may just have to mine their site again for another Bargain Dress of the Week!

“Eleora” by Amelia Classics

By Hannah Kane on February 5th, 2009

Eleora cropped.jpg Ladies just have a look at this frock by Amelia Classics – wow! I love the elegance of the straight neckline and delicate beading on the hip, and then just have a look at that split! Sexy but not slutty. I’m thinking it would look great for a summer or destination wedding with tanned legs and minimal styling. Perfect if you’ve got a cracking pair of pins and don’t want to hide them on your big day!

Fashion forward but definitely bridal – Vera Wang spring 09

By Andrea Thatcher on February 5th, 2009

Vera Wang spring 09.jpg

This wedding gown says “runway couture” without looking like the bride got lost on her way to the Oscars (and oh, dyed her dress white). Of course it’s from Vera Wang, who almost always gets it right. This is a lot more detailed than many of Vera’s dresses, and I love it in all its feminine glory. Fan pleating at the neckline, a bow and soft waves at the fishtail hem all work together for a stunning effect. Not for the fiance who’s faint of heart or likes things simple, this is for the fashion crowd.

Oriental collar detail dress by Johanna Hehir

By Hannah Kane on February 4th, 2009

oriental collar resized.jpgThe Oriental collar detail on this gorgeous French Chantilly lace gown by Johannah Hehir is really unusual, definitely a winner if you want to go for something memorable on your wedding day. Proof that you can cover up and still be super sexy! The shoulders have a cutaway detail, the fishtail cut accentuates your curves and the skirt falls into a pretty puddle train. Made to measure (including 3 fittings) costs £2526 and a standard size 8-12 is priced £2226.

Style 2124 from Johannah Hehir.

Style 13033 by Victoria Jayne

By Hannah Kane on February 3rd, 2009

victoria_jayne_cropped.jpgI’m a big fan of unstructured gowns. This one, style 13033 by Victoria Jayne, available from The Wedding Shop, is covered in lovely vintage-style detailed embroidery, has a flattering crossover bust detail and falls gently over the hips into a chapel train. The spaghetti straps are perfect if you’re worried about the ‘girls’ popping out in a strapless number!

Lacroix sweedie: Paris Couture Fashion Week

By Hannah Kane on February 2nd, 2009

LaCroix couture bridal dress.jpg
For those of us who didn’t get a ticket to last week’s Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, here is Lacroix’s bridal offering for Spring Summer 2009. I’m thinking Frock Horror! Silver sleeves that look like tin foil, unflattering teepee silhouette, random pink corsages on the shoulders and a lace overlay that probably costs more than my flat. And just have a look at that veil! It’s over the top, no doubt horrifically expensive and almost unwearable. Fashion at it’s most extreme. God bless Lacroix and Couture Week!

Frock Horror #152: Chanel

By admin on January 30th, 2009

FH152.jpg
To be fair, Chanel’s Spring/Summer show featured entirely white clothing so it was a bit hard to tell if any of it was supposed to be bridal or not. I think this is supposed to be bridalwear though, why else would it have a train? I’ve been trying to like the slim leg/ tunic combo but the dead albatross on the model’s head and that odd train is putting me right off.
