Guestwear: Hot young Mum

By admin on December 17th, 2007

Dressing your age whilst keeping stylish and practical is challenge enough to anyone then throw in looking after young children too and where do you start? Make sure your clothes can deal with the challenges of the day, after all, when junior has darted off into the bushes, you don’t want to be bent over retrieving him as a gust of wind blows your skirt skywards. A trouser suit is stylish and practical – not only will you avoid any flashing accidents but you can wear a funky top and still be able to cover it with a jacket if the little miss/master finger paints you during dinner. Recreate a similar style with separates teaming together smart trousers and a tailored jacket if you don’t fancy a suit or try out a glam tuxedo for an evening do.

Wedding Guest Fashion: More outerwear

jacquard-coat.jpgThis jacquard coat from Littlewoods isn’t quite as posh as the LK Bennet one we featured last week , but then, it isn’t quite as expensive, either, and if you agree with me that a good opera-style coat is a sound investment for wedding guests, you might just think it’s worth the £120 Littlewoods are charging for it. Wear to the church and for the photos (if you’re in them) and then ditch for the meal and evening reception: and, like its more expensive counterpart, at least you know that the colour will work with almost anything.

Wedding Guest Fashion: Versatile style

By admin on December 10th, 2007

weddinguestfashion.jpgThis pretty georgette dress is such a simple style that it could work for almost any wedding-guest scaenraio you want to throw at it. While it would be perfect worn on its own for a summer wedding, a fitted jacket, beaded cardigan or wrap would make it suitable winter attire, and a little bit of dressing up with some sparky accessories and heels would take it from day to evening easily. If you’re stuck for bridesmaid’s dresses, and are looking for something knee-length and simple, it could even work for that, too. It’s £59 and you’ll find it at Great Universal.

Wedding Guest Fashion: Outerwear from LK Bennett

By admin on November 30th, 2007

outerwear.jpgIn the winter, one of the biggest problems a wedding guest faces is how to stay warm and look smart at the same time – a particular problem if the ceremony is taking place in a draughty church! The answer is to invest in a smart opera coat, like this one from LK Bennett. As investments go, it’s a fairly big one – this coat is £389, but you can often find much cheaper versions on the high street, and just think of all of the weddings you’ll be able to wear it to!

The beauty of a coat like this is that it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing underneath: wear something dressy enough for the evening reception, but throw this over the top, and you’ll still look smart enough for church. The gold brocade will go with most colours, too, so it won’t matter too much how you accessorize it.

Guest Fashion: What to wear when you’re expecting

By admin on November 30th, 2007

GTL%20pregnancy.JPG

Finding clothes during pregnancy is enough of a nightmare without having to search out something to wear for a wedding. So, don’t worry, I’ve done it for you. I was thinking of the reception when I was putting this together, but swap the shoes and bag, pull on a wrap and the dress would work for the day too.

The dress is from Isabella Oliver and costs £90. My wrap dress and trousers from Isabella Oliver saw me through the entire pregnancy (and, I must admit, I’ve worn the dress a time or two since as well). The fabric is cool and comfortable and the ruffles add a bit of a dressy aspect.

Wedding Guest Fashion: 40s Style

By admin on November 29th, 2007

fortiesdress.jpg
I’m convinced that one of the reasons people have such trouble finding suitable wedding outfits is because we’re just not used to dressing up these days. Casual attire rules for all but the most formal of occasions, which means we’ve lost the art of smart dressing. That’s why looking back to days gone by can provide such great inspiration for those occasions we absolutely can’t wear jeans to. This 40s style dress by Principles, for instance, would be perfect for a wedding: the red is bright but not brassy and the cut is stylish. It also looks like it’s just crying out to be teamed with that other wedding essential – a great hat! Complete the forties look with a pair of gloves, some high heeled courts and seamed nylons.

Guest fashion: The ‘my ex will be there’ wedding

By admin on November 26th, 2007

Guest%20fash%20ex.JPG
Knowing that your ex will be at a wedding you’re about to attend is often a cause for fashion concern. The key to dressing for this occasion is cool, classic and confident. You want to look smart, stylish and over him before you even split up.

Go for a bold colour which says you aren’t afraid to be noticed but in a fitted stretch satin to show off your figure, smart heels that make your legs look fab and a pair of chandelier earrings that dazzle almost as much as you.

Guest fashion: Cool winter wear

By admin on November 16th, 2007

Like the ubiquitous LBD, everyone should have a great evening coat in their wardrobe. Go for pretty detailing like beading or embroidery and make sure it’s in a tactile fabric such as brocade, velvet or cashmere for a luxurious feel.

This belted cashmere coat will look great at winter weddings – the 3/4 sleeves mean it isn’t worklike, the belt will give you definition and the rich burgandy ‘oxblood’ (shudder) shade is warming. Underneath, pair it with this strapless red dress that with a hem that’ll just peek under the coat and is ready to be shown off at the reception. Product info after the cut.

Guest fashion: Small boys

By admin on November 16th, 2007

urchin.jpgOur three year old son has only attended one wedding and that was as a page boy (in top hat and tails no less!), so now that he’s been invited as a guest I struggled to think what he could possibly wear.

Being three, he usually manages to mess his clothes up within seconds of putting them on. If it’s not milk down his top, then it’s a wiped nose on a sleeve or mud on the knees. But whenever we want him to look even vaguely nice, we always go for a tank top – smart without being too constraining – so I thought this could work for a wedding too. This Burlington Tank Top is by Kent & Carey Boys’ Clothing and costs £25.99 from Urchin. Now we just need to get him into shiny shoes…

Wedding Guest Fashion: Shrug, bag and fascinator from Next

By admin on November 14th, 2007

382-641-X40w.jpg Being a guest at a wedding can often involve a seemingly endless hunt for the right bag to match your shoes and the right hat to match your dress, and so on and so forth. Leave it to Next, though, to make sure your accessories are perfectly co-ordinated, with this matching shrug, bag and fascinator, which would all be fabulous for a summer wedding or evening reception.

The fascinator is £16, the bolero is £25 and the clutch bag is £14, making the full set a relatively inexpensive way to accessories your outfit.

Wedding guest fashion: The Fashionista

By admin on November 9th, 2007

monsoon-octavia.jpg We’ve already talked about how being a guest at a wedding isn’t the time to indulge in your passion for high fashion with showstopper outfits or anything too wild and wacky. If you’re a fashionista at heart, though, there are subtle ways to give a little nod towards the seasons trends in your wedding guest attire. This season’s big colour, for instance, is purple, so this ‘Amelia’ dress by Monsoon would be just perfect.

The shape will show off your figure without being too revealing, the jewel neckline makes it ideal evening wear, and then there’s that lovely rich purple colour – perfect! It’s £95, and will need a shawl or other wrap for the church, if you’ve been invited to the full wedding.

Wedding guest attire: brown silk dress by Jones New York

By admin on November 2nd, 2007

jones-new-york.jpg Someone else’s wedding isn’t really the time to be making bold fashion statements or flashing lots of flesh. The occasion calls for something classy and tasteful, that shows you’ve made a bit of an effort, and this silk dupioni dress by Jones New York fulfills that criteria perfectly.

Falling just above the knee, and with a sheath-style neckline and shape, the pale brown is a great colour for winter weddings, but will work for summer, too. A cream or gold jacket or cardigan will keep you warm during the ceremony, and the silk fabric has enough “flow” to look great when you’re dancing at night. It’s $170 at Nordstrom.

What not to wear when you’re a wedding guest

By admin on November 1st, 2007

Guestwear.JPGIt’s tricky getting your outfit right when you can’t quite decide what smart/casual means and what funnies the weather will present us with. However, there are a few hard and fast rules for what not to wear that wedding guests should follow.

Rule one: The colour white
You’d think this was an obvious one but apparently not. The only one who should be wearing white at a wedding is the bride. Even if she’s chosen a different colour for her gown, still don’t wear white/cream/ivory unless you want to confuse guests or appear a little silly. Conversely, don’t wear black unless it’s black tie or you’re an evening reception guest – it’s not a funeral.

Wedding guest fashion: when you need form and function

By admin on November 1st, 2007

decodress.jpgThe last time I went to a wedding, I struggled to find something to wear. I needed something that would work day and night, that I could wear a wrap or jacket with (since it was probably going to be cold) and that would also be comfortable enough that I could run around after my 2-year-old who was a page boy. After trying and rejecting numerous outfits, I finally found a dress by Great Plains. It was easy to wear (if you don’t count the fact that my boobs threatened to fall out of the neckline when I bent down to pick up my son) and I received loads of compliments (for the dress, not the boobs).

So now, Great Plains is my first port of call for all wedding outfits. I love this Deco Dress, £50 and available in blue and brown, and will be snapping it up for the next wedding I’m attending … along with some more supportive undergarments.

Wedding guest fashion: From day to night

By admin on October 29th, 2007

Guest%20fash2.JPG
Dressing for a day wedding that carries on to a night do is one of the hardest occasions you can dress for. You need to be comfortable yet stylish, not over the top but never underdressed in a style that is subtly sexy and all this with shoes that don’t leave you yearning to rip them off and stuff them in the bin by the time the night is over.

This creamy gold dress will look great during the day with its knee length skirt and vee neck, but the metallic gold belt makes it perfect for an evening reception. Matching shoes have a knotted vamp and a sturdy heel but if you’re not a heels gal, go for a pair of ballet flats instead. A sequinned heart clutch bag is stylish yet fun and finish with glitzy earrings.
