Iconic Brides # 36 – Sarah Michelle Gellar

By admin on December 5th, 2007

[Images unavailable]Sarah Michelle Gellar was yet another celebrity bride who opted to wear a Vera Wang dress when she married Freddie Prinze Jr. in 2002. The couple flew to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, along with a handful of guests, and spent three days relaxing in the sun before marrying at a private hilltop estate with a pool encircling the house. The ceremony was supposed to take place out of doors, but had to be moved inside due to bad weather: it doesn’t look like it damped Sarah Michelle’s spirits, though: the actress is literally glowing with happiness in the wedding pictures which were released!

Brides on Film #7: Alyson Hannigan in American Pie: The Wedding

By admin on December 3rd, 2007

BoF7%20AmericanPie.JPG
Once there was a girl who really enjoyed band camp who met a boy who made apple pie seem wholly un-American and the rest, as they say, was history. American Pie: The Wedding was the final installment in the growing-up comedy series and centres around the nuptials of Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). The wedding dress plays a part in the film with several hilarious scenes. Made by a hard to find designer named Leslie, Jim and his daft crowd embark on a mission to find her, who actually turns out to be a him, and get the dress of Michelle’s dreams. Surprisingly enough, Michelle opted for a traditional A-line teamed with a long veil and cut quite a sophisticated figure along with a suited’n'booted Jim.

Iconic Brides # 35 – Debra Messing

By admin on November 28th, 2007

debram_danielz01.jpgSanta Barbara was the location for actress Debra Messing’s wedding to screenwriter Daniel Zelman, on December 3, 2000. The bride wore a strapless creation by Vera Wang to the outdoor ceremony, which took place on a private estate, with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, while the groom wore Hugo Boss, and gave his new wife a 100 year old sapphire ring as a wedding present – lucky Debra!

The 150 guests included Debra’s Will and Grace co-stars and the honeymoon took place at Santa Barbara’s Bacara Resort.

Brides on Film #6: Gilmore Girls

By admin on November 26th, 2007

Brides%20on%20Film%206%20GilmoreGirls.JPGConfession time. I’ll admit I’ve never watched the Gilmore Girls. To many of my acquaintances this is TV heresy. But you know what, there are repeats and the joys of boxsets so I’m sure I’ll see it in its entirity eventually.

In the mean time, this soft-pinkish dress worn by Lorelai is a joy with its textured bodice, satin waistband and A-line skirt. The veil is a neat addition and the very delicate tiara sets it off perfectly. But if you want to know what happened at the wedding, one of the Gilmore Girls fans will have to share!

Iconic Brides # 34 – Tori Spelling

By admin on November 21st, 2007

They’ve rarely been out of the spotlight since their wedding, thanks to a reality TV show and much-publicised pregnancy, but the path to true love didn’t exactly run smoothly for Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott – in fact, Tori’s divorce from first husband, Charlie Shanian, was only finalised a month before the wedding. The marriage ceremony took place on a Fiji beach, with Tori in a custom-made Badgley Mischka dress. The groom also wore white and both went barefoot for the very private ceremony, with no guests in attendance. At least they didn’t have to travel for their honeymoon, though – the newly married couple remained on Fiji for another nine days to celebrate the marriage.

Iconic Brides # 33 – Natalie Imbruglia

By admin on November 14th, 2007

imbruglia_johns%2C0.jpg Natalie Imbruglia looks good in most things, but in a Monique Lhuillier gown and Jimmy Choo shoes, I’d imagine she must have looked absolutely stunning. I say “imagine” because pictures of Natalie’s Silverchair singer Daniel Johns are few and far between, with this lovely image of the couple one of the few to be released. They married in secret at Thala Beach Lodge in Port Douglas, Australia, with the bride walking down the aisle to the strains of a live orchestra playing music especially composed for the ceremony.

While the bride wore a traditional gown, the groom went for a pale blue suit. Guests are believed to have included Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce and Richard Branson.

Brides on Film #5: Nia Vardolos’ Big Fat Greek Wedding

By admin on November 12th, 2007

BoF5%20Greek.JPG
Who can forget My Big Fat Greek Wedding? It was the tale of Greek American Toula with a very bossy family – some would call it plain intrusive and put their foot firmly down but that doesn’t make good TV, does it? – who want her to marry a nice boy. Instead Nia chooses Ian, played by John Corbett, who is indeed a very nice boy, he’s just not Greek. Still, a film like this deserves a suitably happy ending and that time honoured tradition of a makeover, so they get the fairytale and she gets this enormous frothy frock which, according to Wikipedia, and quite rightly, was called ‘the snow beast’. The biggest fairytale however was behind the scenes. The movie cost just US$5 million to make but grossed US$368 million worldwide.

Iconic Brides # 32 – Eva Longoria

By admin on November 7th, 2007

340x.jpgDesperate Housewives’ Eva Longoria counts as an iconic bride, not just for the day of her wedding itself, but for the entire week that preceded it, during which Eva, and her then-fiance, Tony Parker, flitted around France in a succession of ever-more glamorous outfits.

This photo was taken at Eva and Tony’s first ceremony, on July 6th, 2007, at City Hall in Paris. She wore a short pink Chanel dress and towering high heels, which were replaced with a long, Angel Sanchez gown for her second ceremony, which took place the next day, at a 17th century chateaux outside the city (see a picture here). All of her Desperate Housewives co-stars were in attendance, as were a smattering of other A-listers, including Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones.

Brides on Film #4: The One with Phoebe’s Wedding

Loved the Friends’ weddings? Sure, who didn’t! Phoebe and Mike had a particularly special snow-filled ceremony outside Central Perk with Joey as their minister. Phoebe wore a US$8,500 Rani Totman gown with an elbow length veil and you can hear exactly what she thinks of getting married in the snow at the end of this video clip.

Iconic Brides # 31 – Trudie Styler

By admin on October 31st, 2007

trudie-styler.jpg

Lots of brides choose to arrive at their wedding ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage, but when Trudie Styler married Sting in 1992, Trudie decided to dispense with the carriage altogether and just stick to the horse. With her $40,000 Versace gown trailing almost the ground, she made an iconic bride indeed as she arrived – with her groom – at the 11th century chapel in Wiltshire, England, where the ceremony took place.

Afterwards, the newly-married couple retired, with their 250 guests, to their Elizabethan mansion house, where music was provided by Sting’s band, The Police, who reformed especially for the occasion – awww!

Brides on Film #3: Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy

By admin on October 29th, 2007

BoF3%20Yang1.JPG
The Yang-Burke wedding only aired in the UK last week and whilst the nuptials may have not exactly been smooth, or for that matter, even gone ahead with, at least Cristina Yang looked fabulous in her US$6,600 Amsale dress. The dress is an interesting choice. She wouldn’t suit a puffy frock along the lines of those she was shown trying on (see pic after the cut), nor would she suit something romantic or whimsical. Instead, the no-nonsense surgeon got a glamorous mermaid style dress that fit like a glove.

As for her bridesmaids, characters Izzie, Callie and Meredith all wore chocolate coloured floor length gowns with different necklines to suit their figures.

Iconic Brides # 30 – Christina Aguilera

By admin on October 24th, 2007

christina-aguilera.jpg

When Christina Aguilera married Jordan Bratman on November 19th, 2005, it came as no surprise to any of her fans to see that the usually flamboyant singer went for an equally flamboyant dress – in fact, the ruffled Christian Lacroix creation takes up most of the wedding pictures!

The couple married at sunset, in a vineyard in California’s Nappa Valley, with bridesmaid’s dresses designed by Stevie Wonder’s wife, Kai Milia. Instead of wedding gifts, they asked guests to donate to the relief funds for Hurricane Katrina and Rita, and are rumoured to be expecting their first child, although they’ve steadfastly refused to confirm it!

Brides on Film #2: Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride

By admin on October 22nd, 2007

Bridesonfilm2a.JPG
One of our readers suggested romcom Runaway Bride for our second installment of Brides on Film. In the movie, Julia Roberts plays Maggie who despite seemingly wanting to get married has a tendency to do a last minute flit leaving her numerous husbands-to-be standing at the altar. Finally, after agreeing to marry Ike, an investigative reporter covering Maggie’s story, she even does a moonlight flit on him thus confirming her not so nice reputation as the runaway bride. I’ve rounded up images of a couple of the dresses she wore so click on over to see the other one and compare the very different styles. All dresses from the film were rumoured to have been designed by costume designer Albert Wolsky or Amsale with shoes by Peter Fox. At least one of the dresses was later auctioned for charity.

Iconic Brides # 29 – Katie Price

By admin on October 17th, 2007

_peter_andre_jordan_wedding.jpg

Some brides are iconic, not so much for the elegance of their wedding, but for the sheer, over-the-top drama of it. Once such bride was Katie Price, aka glamour model Jordan, who married Peter Andre on 10th September 2005, at Highclere Castle in Berkshire.

Wearing a huge pink dress with Swarovski crystal detailing on the bodice, and a sparking tiara, Katie looked a little like a Barbie doll as she married her groom, who wore a white suit. Both outfits were designed by Isabell Kristensen. She had eight bridesmaids and walked down the aisle to a gospel choir’s rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Have Nothing’. The couple are still married, and have two children of their own, plus Katie’s son Harvey, from a previous relationship.

Brides on Film #1: Sex and the City’s Charlotte

By admin on October 15th, 2007

Bridesonfilm1.JPG
We’ve mentioned a few TV brides in our Iconic Brides section and as there are so many, they really deserve a category all of their own. First up, in this new series of Brides on Film, is a dress from one of the favourite series in television history. Known for it’s fashion – both iconic and off the wall – it’s no surprise that the weddings were just as stylish. Kristin Davis as Charlotte York may have worn a fantastic frock to her first wedding to Dr McDougal, but it’s her second wedding to loveable Harry Goldenblatt that makes it my favourite.

The Badgley Mischka design is a demure cap sleeved style with a horizontal ribbon hem and chapel length train. Teamed with an elbow length veil that sits on the crown, this is the perfect look for Charlotte.

Do you have a favourite wedding dress from film or TV? Let us know in the comments and if we can track it down, it’ll go on the list!
