Iconic Brides #13 Yoko Ono

By admin on June 1st, 2007

B72722.jpg(I know, I know – it should have happened on Wednesday, but here it is, just two days late…)

White knee socks, a sun hat and a mini skirt. It’s not the most conventional of bridal outfits, but this is Yoko Ono we’re talking about, and given that she’d already appeared naked on the cover of the “Two Virgins” albums she’d made with new husband, John Lennon, we should probably just be grateful that Yoko was clothed at all.

John and Yoko married in Gibraltar on 20th March, 1969 – just two days after Paul McCartney married Linda Eastman. Dressed in her customary ’60s style, and with a pair of huge sunglasses to finish off the look, Yoko made an unusual bride, but the wedding was nothing compared to the honeymoon that followed it.

Iconic Brides # 12 – Jennifer Aniston

By admin on May 23rd, 2007

Pitt_aniston_wedding.jpg

Despite the media’s best efforts, this was the only picture ever released of Jennifer Aniston’s wedding to Brad Pitt, on July 29th, 2000. Jennifer is no less an iconic bride for that, though: although we can’t see much of her Lawrence Steele gown, which was studded with hundreds of tiny pearls, it was Jennifer’s famous hair that grabbed everyone’s attention. Slightly unusually, the Friends actress chose to wear her hair loose under a white veil, creating a simple, natural look.

Jennifer also wore Manolo Blahnik suede sandals, and the couple were married under a flower-decked canopy on a private estate in Malibu, California, with the ceremony taking place as the sun went down. Sadly, this was another celebrity marriage that didn’t last, and it’s rumoured that Jennifer burned her wedding gown in a symbolic gesture when the couple divorced in 2005.

Iconic Bride # 11: Princess Diana

By admin on May 16th, 2007

NYET13203301521-big.jpg No series on Iconic Brides would be complete without Princess Diana, would it? While the cold light of 2007 can make her 1981 wedding gown look just a little bit dated, there’s no denying that it was the iconic dress of its time, and certainly a dress fit for a Princess. Made by David and Elizabeth Emmanuel, the gown was made of ivory silk and taffeta and featured 10,000 hand-sewn pearls and sequins. It also had a 25-foot-train, and drew gasps from the crowd as Diana entered Westminster Abbey.

Iconic Bride # 10: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy

By admin on May 9th, 2007

classic_kennedy.jpgShe may never have become as well known as her famous mother-in-law, Jackie Kennedy, but when Carolyn Bessette married JFK Junior on 21st September, 1996, she certainly managed to channel some of Jackie’s legendary style.

Given that she was marrying into one of America’s most powerful dynasties, the Calvin Klein publicist could probably have afforded to go the ostentatious route. Instead, Carolyn’s wedding was as chic and stylish as she was, with the bride choosing a classic white sheath dress by Narcisco Rodriguez, complimented by a sleek bun and red lipstick.

Iconic Bride #9: Catherine Zeta Jones

By admin on May 2nd, 2007

Most people will remember the wedding of Hollywood superstars Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas because of the million pound landmark legal battle that ensued when Hello! magazine published unauthorised photos of the couple at their wedding. Incase you missed the details of the wedding itself, let me remind you…The ceremony took place on 18th November 2001 at The Plaza Hotel, New York. Estimated to have cost around £1.2 million it was a star studded affair which included guests like Oliver Stone and ex-UN Secretary general Kofi Annan.

Iconic Bride #8: Gwen Stefani

On 14th September 2002 Gwen Stefani, the stunning singer from pop band No Doubt, married Gavin Rossdale, singer from Bush. The ceremony took place in St. Paul’s Church in Covent Garden, London. It was a fairly modest affair, with only a handful of close friends and family invited to the ceremony. The bride arrived a full hour late with her father Dennis, in a 1970′s white Rolls Royce, while the groom waited patiently outside with his sheepdog Winston!

Iconic Bride #7: Kylie Minogue as Charlene Mitchell

By admin on April 18th, 2007

kylie.jpgI would love nothing more than to have pop princess Kylie Minogue here as an iconic bride in her own right, but until she finds a man worthy of her affections (not Olivier Martinez it appears!) we will have to settle for her former alter ego Charlene Mitchell from Aussie TV show Neighbours back in the ’80s instead.

The wedding between her and on-screen boyfriend Scott Robinson (played by Jason Donovan) on 1st July 1987 was watched by millions worldwide. Who can forget the moment the church door opened to reveal the vision in white, on the arm of her big brother Henry?!

celeb%20bride%20montage.jpg

During my search for Iconic Brides I have come across several deserving women I’d like to have featured, but either I couldn’t gather enough information together about their wedding, or they just didn’t quite make the shortlist.

So I thought I’d post a little montage of their images as brides, just to let you see how utterly fabulous they look, plus a little bit about each marriage.

Iconic Brides #5: Bianca Jagger

By admin on April 4th, 2007

Bianca%20Jagger.JPG
Bianca Perez Morena de Macias (say that three times fast!) married Rolling Stone frontman Mick Jagger in French Riviera town St.Tropez on 12th May 1971. The civil ceremony, which took place in the town hall, had a rocky start when an argument broke out between Jagger’s spokesman and local police over the amount of paparazzi who’d been allowed into the hall. As a result the ceremony was postponed by one and a half hours (perhaps that explains Bianca’s expression in the first photograph!)

Iconic Bride #3: Priscilla Presley

By admin on March 28th, 2007

We couldn’t really have an Iconic Bride series without including Priscilla Presley. After all she may not have been an icon herself, but boy did she choose some guy to marry! Personally I think she’s one of the luckiest women alive, but then again I have a thing about men with quiffs!

The wedding of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu (formerly Wagner) took place on 1st may 1967 in one of the most grandios suites of the Aladdin Hotel, Las Vegas. Despite the couple’s notoriety It was a private ceremony that took all of eight minutes to conclude.

Iconic Bride #3: HRH Princess Margaret

By Elisa Smith on March 21st, 2007

Princes_margaretMargaret_gown_museum

There are some pretty obvious candidates within the House of Windsor who could have been chosen for our Iconic Bride series, but I think one of the most stylish and elegant is Princess Margaret during her marriage to Anthony Armstrong Jones.

The wedding took place on 6th May 1960 in Westminster Abbey and it was actually the very first televised Royal wedding, watched by over 20 million people. Margaret was 29 when she married and certainly lived up to the ‘Princess Bride’ title.

Iconic Brides #2 – Jackie Kennedy

We continue our feature on ‘Iconic Brides’ by looking this week at Jackie Bouvier, the woman who captured the heart of then U.S Senator John F. Kennedy, and became the First Lady to the 35th President of the United States.

There is no doubt that Jackie is a style icon, the fact that her wedding dress is the most photographed in U.S history is testament to this. Despite her untimely death in 1994 she continues to inspire women of all ages with her elegant style.

Iconic Brides #1 – Grace Kelly

By admin on March 7th, 2007

Iconic1

In the first of a new series, we’ll be looking at the famous brides that have captivated us by their choice of wedding dress over the decades. Sure, there will be some we hate, some we love, some worn by TV characters rather than real women and some we just can’t think why? But rest assured, we’ll have a never ending supply! And if you won’t to nominate an iconic bride – email us!

Kicking off the first installment is a Hollywood icon who married her own real prince – Grace Kelly. The wedding took place in April 1956 and set the trend for big dresses to come back in fashion after the sparesness of materials during the previous decade. Both the silk and lace and the shape of the dress itself have never gone out fashion and it is very demure as befitting a future royal.
