Lost In Music: The First Dance # 56

By admin on July 9th, 2008

once.jpgI finally watched the movie, Once, the other night. I’ve been hearing about it for ages, mainly because of the soundtrack rather than the film itself and neither aspect disappointed.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova won Best Song at this year’s Oscars for the song Falling Slowly and while the lyrics aren’t exactly wedding-perfect, it’s such an incredibly romantic song that I can absolutely see it working for a first dance.

You Tube wedding video: Amanda and Darren’s first dance

By admin on July 3rd, 2008

I love Bjork’s It’s Oh So Quiet, but I would never have thought of it for a first dance. It works brilliantly, though, as you can see!

Lost In Music: The First Dance # 55

By admin on July 2nd, 2008

josh_g1.jpgIf you don’t know Josh Groban, he did the original version of You Raise Me Up, which (like so many good songs…) was later mullered by Westlife. He’s got a beautiful voice and some beautiful songs. I can only really take him in small doses, but that’s me. Anyway, When You Say You Love Me is very, very slow with lovely lyrics:

And this journey that we’re on.
How far we’ve come and I celebrate every moment.
And when you say you love me,
That’s all you have to say.
I’ll always feel this way.

Find it on his album, Closer.

Lost In Music: The First Dance # 54

By admin on June 25th, 2008

B000HIP4D8.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpgI hadn’t heard of Teitur until about five minutes ago, when I read one of his songs was recommended by Jason Mraz (who I adore) on iTunes. The song was Don’t Want You to Wake Up and Mraz describes it as “bliss vocals, gorgeous strings and tons of reverb.” So I checked it out. And he’s not wrong. It *is* a gorgeous song and it’s also highly romantic and so a perfect first dance song.

If you’re worried about the title – he doesn’t not want her to wake up in a, you know, having her killed kind of way, but more in a don’t want to wake up from our love, kind of way. Which is much better, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Oh and Teitur is a singer-songwriter from the Faroe Islands. Find Don’t Want You to Wake Up on his album, Stay Under the Stars.

Lost In Music: The First Dance # 53

By admin on June 18th, 2008

6a00b8ea0714f21bc000e398cbf5b50005-500pi.jpgI have to admit, I don’t know Angel by Sarah McLachlan, but I just read in a magazine that it was Davina McCall’s first dance and I love Davina, so…

Having just listened to a bit, it sounds like a beautiful song, but the lyrics aren’t very romantic. Fortunately, there’s another track on the same album (Surfacing) called I Love You, which again is beautiful, very slow, but much more suitable for a first dance … at least the first half is (in the second half the bloke’s walked away and she’s forgotten to tell him she loves him). Still, who listens to the lyrics anyway?

The UK’s top wedding ‘first dance’ tracks revealed by Shazam

By admin on June 13th, 2008

EricClapton.JPGIf you’ve been reading Keris’ weekly ‘first dance’ picks then you should be well versed in which tracks are wedding perfect and which are big no-nos. Mobile to web music service provider Shazam surveyed 1009 (not really the whole UK then)16-64 year olds to find out which tracks they would pick for their first dance from their 5million track database.

The results came in as:

1. Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton.
2. Angels by Robbie William.
3. You’re Beautiful by James Blunt. (the top tune for under-25s)
4. You to me are everything by The Real Thing.
5. In My Life by The Beatles.

Lost In Music: The First Dance # 52

I thought I’d go with a video again this week because, well, because it’s Queen! You’re My Best Friend is such a great song: not too slow, not too fast, sweet, wedding-appropriate lyrics and a short guitar solo so the groom can throw some shapes (or not). Find it on any number of the numerous Queen Greatest Hits collections.

The First Dance: why even Bridalwave can’t solve our tune crisis

By Alex Roumbas on June 11th, 2008

Aude-Dan-Firstdanceuk-couple.jpgI say ‘crisis’. I mean ‘pain in the arse’.

I don’t want a first dance. I can’t dance, I find it embarrassing to be the centre of attention, Ashley has at least four left feet and all of the songs we both like are thoroughly inappropriate for a wedding and if we must do this then we don’t want to completely confuse people with a rendition of Jens Lekman’s Black Cab (which is actually one of ‘our’ songs). When I dismissed the idea of a dance to my future mother-in-law she looked like I’d kicked the puppy she’d have if she liked dogs. She looked positively hurt. And because I like her, I said “oh, okay then,” and I’ve regretted it ever since.

Now, Ash and I have gone through Keris’s rather fabulous Lost in Music column. But there’s a problem…

Would you write your own wedding song?

By admin on June 10th, 2008

kirstyg.jpgEach week, we suggest songs you might like for your first dance, but what if you can’t find one that’s just right?

Kirsty Greenwood’s aunt was struggling to find the perfect song, but fortunately her niece (Kirsty!) is a songwriter. Kirsty explains…

Around eighteen months ago, my Auntie Lorraine was busy planning for her impending wedding to Dave. The flowers were sorted, the venue booked and the dress fitted like a dream. They were however, having real trouble picking a song for their first dance.

Lost In Music: The First Dance # 51

By admin on June 4th, 2008

seal.jpgI recently saw Seal and Heidi Klum on Oprah and developed a huge crush on both of them. They seem so sweet and genuinely in love (yeah, I know, but surely *some* celebrities are genuinely in love).

Anyway, Seal talked about how he wrote a song – Wedding Day – on the morning of their wedding by thinking about everything you would want to say to the person you are about to marry. You can’t ask for much more than that, can you? Find it on his album, System.

Lost In Music: The First Dance # 49

If-I-Aint-Got-You.jpgWatching Dancing With the Stars a couple of weeks ago, I was struck by how much I love this song, If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys (sorry, I can’t look up who danced to it, since then I’ll find out who won and it’s not shown here until Friday).

A romantic and dramatic song, it’d be perfect for a first dance. Find it on The Diary of Alicia Keys.
