The royal wedding: The ring

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on November 30th, 2010

Did you look at Kate Middleton’s (or Catherine as we now must learn to call her) engagement ring and think that is The Ring for me?

The royal engagement ring

As you are probably already know, the engagement ring originally belonged to William’s late mother, the Princess of Wales; who wore it even after becoming divorced from Prince Charles; and is one stunning piece of jewellery.

The 12-carat, oval cut Ceylon Sapphire is surrounded by 18 diamonds, set in white gold with a narrow yellow gold band, was selected by Diana from a selection of eight rings by Royal jeweller Garrard. The ring, which cost £28,000 in 1981, is now valued around £250,000.

Now us normal girls can’t afford to pay those sums for our wedding, let alone for one ring! Luckily, online shopping site QVC offers three extremely similar designs at more affordable prices for those looking for ‘the Willerine / Cathiam ring’ (we haven’t decided what to call the happy couple just yet).

Check out the designs below and happy shopping!

Thrifty Brides Cause Boom in Winter Weddings

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on November 18th, 2010

Winter weddingRosy cheeks are popular among blushing brides and it looks like many of you are opting for a natural rosy tint as winter weddings are increasing in popularity.

According to high street chain Debenhams, winter weddings are up 28% with the week of Sunday 26th December 2010 and are now as popular as the first week in July. The change was noted when the Debenhams Gift List service experienced a record number of couples registering lists in September and October for weddings taking place from November through to February.

Debenhams research shows that booking a wedding on a Friday or Sunday, rather than the standard Saturday, has also increased in popularity with brides and grooms looking to cut costs. And as an added bonus it also found that winter wedding guests are likely to be more generous when buying wedding gifts.

So not only can saying “I do” in the cold winter months save a couple of pennies, but think about the added romantic ambiance only a frosty winter day can offer!

Are you planning a winter wedding? Let us know in the comment box below.

Prince William to marry Kate Middleton next year

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on November 16th, 2010

willsandkatethumb.jpgIt’s official! Prince William is to marry Kate Middleton next year, Clarence House has confirmed.

“The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton,” Clarence House said in a statement today. “The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London.”

Very few details have been revealed, but the couple became engaged in October during a private holiday to Kenya.

We are wondering who will have the honour of designing the dress for the most anticipated royal wedding this decade; surely the designer has to be British?

In the meantime, have a look at some other famous royal weddings in more recent times.

Weight Watchers Announces new ProPoints Weight Loss Plan

By LauraScott on October 28th, 2010

wedding-cupcakes.jpg

I don’t think there is any denying that all women try to loose a few pounds before their big day. So when Weight Watchers got in touch to tell me that they had completely revamped their program, I was intrigued.

I have never been one for diets, its not that I couldn’t afford to lose a couple of pounds, but the idea of constantly having to keep track of every calorie I consume sounds overwhelming, not to mention time consuming. Needless to say I was a bit skeptical about their program at first. However, as the nutritionist walked us through the science behind their new program, ProPoints, I quickly began to change my mind and am even debating giving it ago myself.

ProPoints has been developed around the idea that the way we look at calories is out of date and, well… fundamentally flawed. It turns out for most of us the number of calories we believe we are eating and the number we think we are spending is totally inaccurate. The fact is while the idea of calories in and calories out sounds simple, the calories on food labels aren’t the most accurate way to measure your food or assess its effectiveness for weight loss.

In fact, everything we do to process what we eat, from chewing food to chemically breaking it down in our stomachs, all uses energy from the food itself. Traditional calories on labels only tell us what energy there is in a food before you eat it. This is where ProPoints comes in They tell you the amount of energy that’s available in a food after you’ve eaten it. With this knowledge you can pick food that takes more energy for the body to process, yet will leave you will a greater feeling of fullness than fat and carbohydrates without fibre.

The science side of it all sounded great to me, but the reality is I am not going to give up that glass of wine after work, or that sneaky chocolate bar. This is where they really won me over, guilt free bonus points! Every week you are given an additional 49 ProPoints that you can spend how you like and seeing as a bottle of wine, only has 20 ProPoints values you can still have a lot of fun.

Weight Watchers will be rolling out the plan in the UK November 7th and I have to say I might actually give it a go.

Gallery: Nicole Richie confirms autumn wedding plans

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on October 13th, 2010

Former wild child, come fashion designer Nicole Richie and her rocker fiancé Joel Madden are set to wed this autumn after becoming engaged earlier this year.

However, Richie has yet to announce the exact date of her wedding, but sources say that it is likely to be in December. Richie is working with wedding planner Mindy Weiss to ensure that the day will be memorable.

We are certain that with the help of Weiss and personal stylist, Simone Harouche, Richie will be a vision when she finally walks down the isle. With her wedding location and dress still a mystery, Bridalwave couldn`t help but have a look into our office crystal ball to see what Richie might end up wearing when she ties the knot.

Could it be a dress from Marchesa or perhaps a creation by Charlotte Ronson, the fashion designer sister of Samantha and Mark?

Perfect ten: Sunday is set to be a memorable day for many couples

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on October 8th, 2010

wedding.jpgDon’t be surprised if you see an unusual number of brides and grooms around town this coming Sunday – the most memorable day of the year… 10/10/10.

All over the world, the date has been booked up for months, with thousands of couples wanting to tie the knot on the most unique date of the year. According to Brides Magazine over 31,000 UK couples are getting hitched this weekend, with some registry offices and churches opening their doors especially to accommodate demand. Manchester’s 163-year-old register office will be open on a Sunday for only the third time in its history so that romantic couples can say ‘I do’.

This unique phenomenon doesn’t come around too often, in fact only 12 times every 1,000 years. So if you’re planning an equally memorable date for your wedding, there are only two more left this century. Best book that venue post-haste.

Marriage reduces stress claims new study

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on October 7th, 2010

Wedding PlannerIs the pressure of finding the perfect dress making your head spin? Do you wake up in the middle of the night panicking over seating charts? Then you are probably experiencing wedding stress. Planning a wedding is no easy thing – anyone telling you otherwise has probably never planned one!

With millions of things to organise, it is not unusual to experience high levels of stress in the months leading up to your big day. This may put a strain on close relationships, perhaps turning even the nicest girl into Bridezilla. But fear not, there is light at the end of the tunnel. A recent study has found that being married or in a committed romantic relationship alters hormones in a way that reduces stress.

Professor Dario Maestripieri, who lead the team of researchers from the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, says: “The results suggest that single and unpaired individuals are more responsive to psychological stress than married individuals, a finding consistent with a growing body of evidence showing that marriage and social support can buffer against stress.”

The research, published in the current issue of the journal Stress, was conducted on 500 MBA students at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. The students were asked to play a series of computer games that tested economic behaviours, and had their cortisol levels – the stress hormone – measured before and after. In order to induce stress, each student was told that the test was a course requirement and that it would impact their future career placement.

So when you’re finding yourself knee-deep in wedding invitations and stressing over cake samples, remember that once you’ve said “I do” you should be much better equipped to handle other stressors in your life.

Katy Perry-400.jpg

It’s the wedding we’ve all been waiting for.

And according to the gossip grapevine Russell Brand and Katy Perry’s wedding is thought to be just weeks away.

The pair have started the bridal mill talking by reportedly sending out glossy invitations inviting friends to seven days of celebrations in India.

According to The Mirror it is thought 75-100 guests will be attending including the likes of Rihanna (KP’s BFF and hen night organiser), Taylor Swift and Noel Gallagher.

thought to be held at the Taj Rambagh Palace hotel in Jaipur.

The seven day event thought to be held at the Taj Rambagh Palace hotel in Jaipur, is apparently a mix of traditional and Indian celebrations.

‘Expect the most vibrant wedding of the year,’ a friend of the couple told the Mirror. ‘It will be a mix of traditional Hollywood glamour with Katy’s hair and dress, plus Indian touches like henna art on her hands and feet, an Indian tiara and hair brooches.

And it is also thought Katy will be employing dress designer Reem Acra to create her special frock. We can’t wait to see what the day(s) bring.
