Five steps to becoming a wedding planner

By shinychris on September 11th, 2012

A person’s wedding day is widely regarded as being the happiest day of their life and, with this in mind, everything should be perfect and the day itself must run like clockwork. Being the bride and groom can be pressure enough for some and that is why the celebrity fashion of hiring a wedding planner is becoming far more popular and is no longer solely the preserve of the rich and wealthy.

Planning a wedding can be very stressful but when you are doing it for someone else the rewards and satisfaction can be wonderful – and rather lucrative! This explains why they are many wedding planning courses on offer and here are five steps you must take on the road to becoming the architect of others’ dream nuptials:

1. Before you go any further you must ask yourself if you are the right type of person for the job. You’ll be dealing with some very anxious and nervous people so you’ll need a firm but understanding manner to make sure you are able to keep everything under control.

2. You must decide whether your plan is to work for yourself or to join an established operation. Both options have a variety of positives and negatives. Some people need the safety net of being paid a regular wage whilst others relish the opportunity to strike out on their own. Whichever path you choose you need to ensure you are fully armed with the right qualifications and knowledge.

3. Choosing a way to learn the ropes is a major decision. You might have helped out a friend or even organised your own wedding to highly demanding standards but there is much more to professional wedding planning than you might imagine. You can find a range of internationally accredited and certificated courses available online as home learning programmes, which is the perfect solution if you already have commitments on your time which might make it impractical to simply drop everything and set up a new business.

4. Set you aims and know your limits. It can be a fun and rewarding occupation which could run alongside an established career as a second job, or be a sole source of income for someone willing to put in the hours for potentially a limited initial return. Only you will know how much you are willing to put into it and how far you are driven to take it to a logical conclusion.

5. Spread the word. Once you’ve set the parameters and know exactly where you stand the next thing you have to do is get out there and let people know your intentions. If you want to work for someone else make sure you’ve got a great CV that highlights your experience, qualifications and other unique positives. If you’re venturing out on your own you can use all that the Internet has to offer to let people know about your new project. After all, that’s what social networking was invented for!

How to pick the perfect first dance wedding song

By shinychris on July 18th, 2012

There are many aspects to a wedding which you can put your stamp on in order to make it unique to you both. However the first dance is probably the part guests look to for the biggest insight into you as a couple – so how do you get it right?

Choosing a wedding song sets the tone of your day, but also your relationship. The song you pick to dance to for the first time as Mr and Mrs must say something your personalities, your outlook and get everyone in the mood for a good party to celebrate your future happiness together!

Hire a Wedding Band

Playing your favourite song through a music system does the job good enough; but imagine having a live band kick off the evening’s entertainment by playing it to you both in front of all your guests. Bands for weddings are a great idea to make it just that little bit more special and you can tailor your choice of band to your musical tastes.

If you’re a fan of swing then you can have your own Rat Pack style crooners at your big day; or if you like soul music then you can choose a Motown style band. There are lots of themes to pick from Bollywood, jazz, classical, Latin music wedding entertainers and much more, depending on what your tastes are – and this makes your wedding completely unique to you.

Look Back at Key Events in Your Lives

If you look back over the special times you’ve shared together, think about whether there are any songs with words which reflect these times. Are they significant lyrically? Was there any particular music playing when you first met or when you shared your first kiss? You could have the same favourite band and in this case tribute wedding bands are a great idea!

Choose Music from the Decade You Met

If you met in University in the late nineties or early noughties, for example, you could follow the lead of the Royal couple and choose some of the songs that will have been played at your Student Union. Music from the time you met is nostalgic and carries with it a sense of fun that will set the tone for the rest of the evening’s festivities.

Google ‘Love’!

If you’re after a big romantic ballad that sums up that the occasion is a celebration of love, then you might want to simple search on the internet for any songs containing the words ‘love’ – you’re sure to find lots of options this way. Then you can just pick your favourite and the one that most suits you.

How to ensure you have the perfect wedding dress

By shinychris on June 21st, 2012

Commercial feature

It’s common knowledge that women dream of their wedding day as soon as they’re old enough to say Oscar de la Renta. This fantasy rarely dissipates, and follows women into adulthood. It’s no exaggeration, therefore, that a woman’s wedding is one of the most important days of her life – and the dress is a major part of that.

Whether you’re looking in bridal shops, sample sales, thrift stores, or you’re depending on eBay and a trusty courier service, there are certain things that every bride will need to take into consideration.

Inspiration

The latest haven for brides-to-be is Pinterest – the online pin board for sparking ideas. If you start pinning your favourite dresses, colours and trends from the web, it won’t be long before you have more ideas to know what to do with.

Magazines are also a great source of inspiration – some wedding magazines feature other people’s weddings which could ignite a great idea for your dress. Don’t neglect other fashion magazines, though, as these will also help in honing in on your perfect style. Your friends and family will also be a great source for ideas – finding out what did and didn’t work for them will be helpful.

Timing

One of many dilemmas for brides to be is when to start looking for their dress. The general consensus is that six months before the date is the optimum time to start looking. This way, you’re not too late for recent trends, without leaving it too late.

Many brides start dress shopping as soon as they get engaged – but think carefully about doing this. Some brides find The One a year or so before the big day and the lust they have for their dress is unfaltering right up to their wedding. If you follow fashion trends, however, your engagement could see you through a few seasons – so if you know you might get tempted, perhaps hold off until closer to the date. Similarly, if your figure is susceptible to fluctuations, it’s another good reason to try and resist temptation early on into your engagement.

Style

When it comes to colour, cut and style, even the most decisive bride in the world will find it challenging to narrow down her options. There is an ocean of different styles out there, and you’re just one tiny little bride-to-be trying to stay afloat.

The best way to stay afloat is to think about other factors of your wedding first. Take into consideration your venue – if you’re getting married abroad, perhaps on a beach, for instance, this will have a big influence on your dress choice.  You should also bear in mind the time of year your wedding is booked for. A summer wedding will require a dress that will keep you cool when you’re standing in the heat having your photos taken. A winder dress will possibly need a bit more sleeve.

Once you’ve begun the dress hunt, keep an open mind. Don’t eliminate too many styles upfront, as there’s always a disparity between how a dress looks on a hanger to how it looks on a person. Eliminating certain styles without trying them on first could mean you miss the perfect dress!

The next factor to consider is what suits you – your complexion, height and body shape. We’re all aware of what we can and can’t get away with, and what accentuates our best bits – so apply this to your dress. There is a dress to flatter all shapes and sizes – if you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to ask, and do your research!

Trends

If one of your non-negotiable stipulations for a dress is that it’s on-trend, fear not: here is a breakdown of Spring 2013’s crème de la crème of catwalk trends for stylish brides.

Volume

Big, voluminous, skirts are back – so if you want a princess dress, you get a princess dress.

Bows

If you’re looking for something girly and pretty, now is the perfect time to get hunting for bows. Designers have embraced femininity with bows of all sizes.

Scarlet

The colour of love has finally hit the wedding scene, where it rightfully belongs.

Sparkle

There has been a very successful marriage between designers and sparkle – so the more embellishment, the better.

Contrast

The contrast between white and black can make for a breathtaking, dramatic and utterly beautiful dress – and lucky for you, designers have produced a fusion between black and white dresses that won’t disappoint.

Although there’s a ton of things to consider when dress shopping, the most important thing is to remember to enjoy it!

Popular wedding flower trends for 2012

By shinychris on February 24th, 2012

Sponsored post

Wedding trends change as often as the latest fashion looks and are influenced by what goes on at wedding shows, as well as on the catwalk. And such changes in what’s hot also have an effect on what wedding flowers will be popular.

So, here’s our list of the top wedding flower trends to look out for in 2012.

Fragrance

Imagine walking down the aisle with the scent of roses trailing after you. Florists are going to be adding all sorts of aromatic herbs to sweet-smelling bouquets this year. Flowers such as roses, peonies and lilies are expected to feature heavily alongside herbs such as mint, rosemary and oregano!

Purples

There’s been a lot of purple showcased on bridal catwalks and this is going to be reflected in the flower choices couples are making for their weddings. Karen Barnes, Head of Floral Gifting at Interflora, says: “Purple is going to feature heavily in bouquets and other wedding flowers this year. Look for rich, opulent purples and pastel lavenders. This could also be tied in with other decorations and bridesmaids’ dresses.”

Classical

Wedding flowers have been heavily influenced by the royal weddings in 2011. Because of Kate Middleton’s beautiful bouquet of lily of the valley, myrtle and hornbeams, the simplicity of white and green is going to see a surge in popularity.

Karen Barnes says: “White and green are always popular with brides because they are so classic and timeless, but what will change is the horticultural materials florists will be using in these bouquets.”

Vintage

This is a trend that will continue to be popular throughout the coming year. Pastel shades of roses, carnations and tulips look great when mixed with pale greens and whites such as narcissus, rosemary and salal. These bouquets also tend to smell fantastic too and the combination of sweet-smelling flowers and herbs can really add something special to a wedding venue.

How to find special occasion dresses that outshine the rest

By shinychris on February 17th, 2012

Special occasions only come around once in a while, and when they do it’s the only excuse a woman needs to hit the refresh button on her wardrobe. A special occasion outfit should be glam and flattering, and we’ll show you how and where to find the best occasion dresses online. From Teatro occasion dresses to French Connection frocks, a special event or evening calls for glamour aplenty!

Shopping online for a gorgeous dress is a great way to find something that’s affordable. Read the reviews and find out what other fashion lovers are saying about a dress. If it’s got 5 stars, there’s a good chance it won’t let you down on your special day or evening. Teatro occasion dresses are packed with detail and gorgeous embellishment while French Connection dresses are famed for their beautiful cuts. Online shopping at Littlewoods promises a variety of glam dresses at the touch of a button.

Fabrics are key when it comes to pulling together a glam look. Go for satin if you want an expensive look with a glossy finish, or opt for silk if you want a soft and sensual finish. When it comes to style, maxi dresses are instantly elegant while midi dresses are quickly gaining ground on the catwalks. Sleeveless cuts show off toned shoulders, while cap sleeve are a classic finish that flatters. A-line dresses give you a beautifully balanced silhouette while one shoulder dresses lend an unusual look that’s sophisticated and elegant. Occasion dresses from brands like Oasis and French Connection are perfect for A-line cuts.

If you want to top up your vintage look, add a little lace to your outfit. A lace dress is a statement piece with a soft and detailed finish. A lace bolero lends a subtle vintage appeal without going all-out retro. Velvet nods to retro design, and also gives your dress a gorgeous fluid feel.

Remember to finish off your special dress with a tall pair of strappy sandals or heels. Go online shopping at Littlewoods for the latest in accessories, clutch bags, shoes and even the perfect make-up for a stylish finish.

Saving for your wedding day

By shinychris on December 1st, 2011

Getting married might be the happiest day of your life – and it will certainly be one of the most expensive. The average cost of a wedding in the UK today stands at around £18,000. The happy couple typically stump up £4,000 for the reception alone. Then there’s the dress, the suits, the cars, the cake, the photographer and the flowers.

Last year, the average salary for an adult working full time was £25,900. This means a typical couple will spend just over a third of their annual income on tying the knot. So it really makes sense to work out exactly how much you can afford to spend, set yourself a budget to keep control of the costs – and ensure your married life gets off to a good start.

Needing to find large sums of money can be daunting, but having a little patience when it comes to planning your big day can be very calming. For instance, if you’re not in a crazy rush to walk down the aisle and you could wait a year or so, then in that time, small regular savings can easily amount to a significant wedding fund.

ISAs (individual savings accounts) are a great, tax-efficient way to save money and earn interest on it. In the simplest terms, ISAs give you tax advantages on your savings, so you get a higher return on your money. Under this year’s ISA rules, your annual ISA allowance is £10,680 year – that’s a big slice of your wedding budget.

Up to the first £5,340 can be saved in a cash ISA or all of your allowance or the remainder can be saved in a stocks and shares ISA. However, the value of investments and any income they produce can go down as well as up, so you could get back less than you put in.  However, a cash ISA is more suitable for short-term savings. Most high street banks and building societies offer them. Take a look at our best cash ISAs here.

If you already have a lump sum, you could put it in a fixed rate bond, removing the temptation to spend the money – or you could choose a flexible bond, which allows you to withdraw up to 30 per cent without penalty in case of emergencies.

All this talk of budgeting and saving may sound a tad boring, but there are plenty of ways to inject a little fun into the financial planning of your big day. One American couple managed to save around US$480 a month by putting a dollar into a jar each time they heard a Lady Gaga song, saw somebody wearing camouflage or heard an old Madonna song on the radio – and saved even more by regularly emptying their jar into a savings account. Between September 2009 and July 2010, they managed to save well over $6,000.

Don’t let fretting about the finances spoil the excitement of getting married. Instead, take some time out to come up with a budget and work out what you can afford to pay. Once you’ve done that, putting a savings plan in place to pay for your wedding will be a piece of cake.
