Christmas Countdown: Bridalwave’s Top Dresses #3: Oscar de la Renta

By admin on December 24th, 2007

Oscardelarenta.JPGAs I wandered through the Bridalwave archives looking for my favourite dresses of this year, I decided that my criteria should be to find a dress that makes me gasp. When I saw this dress by Oscar de la Renta, I gasped.

And then I read what Camilla wrote about it back in May – “Isn’t this Oscar de la Renta dress breathtaking?” It really is.

Christmas Countdown: Bridalwave’s Top Dresses #4: Melissa Sweet

By admin on December 24th, 2007

Melissa Sweet’s gowns flirt with traditional styles but bring them bang up to date with fun, contemporary styling. Just take this ‘Lark’ gown, it has a simple A-line shape that is given great presence with fun, floaty layers of silk chiffon, delicate frills and that ubiqiutous sash. I’m really pleased that all the layers are cut at any angle – straight horizontal layers would have been so boring and this cut makes the dress a lot of fun.

Christmas Countdown: Bridalwave’s Top Dresses #7: Nicole Miller

Lace can be tricky to get right, too stiff and you could be wearing a tablecloth, too lacy and you could be a doily. Fortunately this Nicole Miller dress didn’t fall in to that chintzy trap. Strapless, with a sashed waist and head to toe lace, it’s super pretty and ideal if you want to go for a romantic look and isn’t that weddings all about? The skirt is great with soft drapes that lightly pool at the feet and despite being semi-full, it doesn’t give the impression of being heavy so you could comfortably wear it from dawn till dusk.

Christmas Countdown: Bridalwave’s Top Dresses #10: David’s Bridal

This David’s bridal trumpet dress has so many possibilities. Dress it up, dress it down, wear a pure white sash or add a bright splash of colour to match your bridesmaid’s dresses or theme – the possibilities are just endless. I still love the way the sash has been tied in an homage to an obi with a double fan bow and pinned with a jewelled detail. Best of all is the price – you really can’t argue with $299.

Top 50 things you should never do at a wedding #4, #3, #2, #1

By admin on January 2nd, 2007

Bridalwave_25The final countdown

#4 – Never fail to thank people for coming. They made efforts in travel, clothing and gifts and that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

#3 – Don’t sneak off for any conjugal visits. Everyone will know what you’re doing. Everyone. But Granny will still ask loudly where you were.

#2 – If you are the bride or groom, never snog or get frisky with anyone else but your bride or groom.

#1 – Never fail to turn up to your own wedding without a really good excuse, like death and even that is pushing it.

#6 – Consider the type of makeup you’re wearing, is it fit for purpose? Waterproof mascara? Check! Non-waterproof mascara is a big no-no as is thick foundation at a summer wedding unless you want to scare small children with your scary melting face.

#5 – Don’t got makeup you’re not used to wearing. Highlighter looks great in person but it can give glare and shine in photos.

Bridalwave_24Little hiccups

#8 – Don’t sweat the small stuff. Little hiccups may happen but hopefully you’re bridal ‘entourage’ will be competent enough to deal with any mishaps.

#7 – Having said that, don’t heap responsibility on your bridesmaids/ groomsmen. They want to have a nice time too.

Bridalwave_23Singles

#10 – Don’t seat your single guests at the same table. It isn’t nice being singled out (excuse the pun) and it will probably offend.

#9 – Don’t insist all single women line up to catch the bouquet. Let the ones who want to participate go for it and the mortified rest, hide.

Bridalwave_21_1 Gifts

# 12 – Don’t criticise the couple’s decision to use a wedding list. Yes, you’re entitled to your opinion, but the middle of someone’s wedding isn’t the time or place to express it! And speaking of wedding lists…

# 11 – If the couple do have a gift registry, don’t go "off list" to get them "something personal", or because you don’t approve of people asking for specific gifts. They’ve decided on a list for a reason – use it!

Bridalwave_21Never question their couples’ choice

#14 – Choice phrases such as ‘you could have done better’ or ‘if only you’d stayed with [insert name]‘ aren’t things that will go down well. Even if they are true!

#13 – Asking ‘why on earth did you choose this venue/band/food’ I doubt they were thinking about what you wanted when they planned their day. If you don’t like it, lump it.

Top 50 things you should never do at a wedding #16, #15

By admin on December 22nd, 2006

Bridalwave_20Food, glorious food

#16 – When working out the timing of your wedding, consider food for guests. A midday or teatime wedding may cause rumbly tummies so have canapes prepared for a cocktail hour. Never leave them hungry.

#15 – Never under estimate for food. Always allow for a few extra slices of cake and enough portions of finger food. It’s better to take home leftovers rather than running out of food midway.

Bridalwave_19_1 Bride & Groom Etiquette

# 18 – Don’t leave your guests standing around for hours on end while you’re whisked off to have your photos taken.  Yes, your pictures are important, but so are your guests, and that long wait between ceremony and meal is one of the most frequent complaints at weddings!

# 17 – Don’t spend the evening gazing soppily into each other’s eyes, to the exclusion of all around you. Your guests have made the effort to be there for your big day, so make sure you make the effort to speak to every last one of them.

Top 50 things you should never do at a wedding #20, #19

By admin on December 21st, 2006

Bridalwave_19Guest etiquette

#20 – Don’t come over holier than thou, like ‘you’ve lived in sin for so long that we thought you were married already’. No, you knew they weren’t and you aren’t funny.

#19 – Never get the names of the couple wrong. You may not remember one of the names if you don’t know that person well or if they have a hard to pronounce name. If you’re not 100% sure, just don’t call them by any name. ‘The happy couple’ or ‘the bride and groom’ will do if talking about them.
