Bridalwave loves: Starlet vintage inspired range by Madeline Isaac James

By Andrea Petrou on October 20th, 2010

Vintage weddings are becoming more and more popular as brides look towards this trend in a bid to stand out on their big day.

Over the past few years vintage inspired dresses have cropped up from a range of designers, giving a nod to the 20s flapper styles, 50s shorties and 70s boho chic.

However one designer we at Bridalwave have fallen in love with is Madeline Isaac James, which has created a range of vintage inspired frocks from different eras.

Frocks in the Starlet range are fishtail, satin and lace with a range of different necklines ranging from strapless and sweetheart to asymmetric with tulle detailing. We also love the beading and cute hats, which finish the vintage look perfectly.

See the gallery below for our fave five from the collection.

Gallery: Madeline Isaac-James launches vintage accessories

By Andrea Petrou on October 19th, 2010

You’ve found that perfect vintage dress and found a venue that fits the theme beautifully, but now it’s time to find those perfect accessories.

Vintage jewellery can be hard to find, but we’ve got some great news for you ladies.

Madeline Isaac-James, a bridalwear designer has launched a range of gorgeous accessories, which not only coordinate with her Starlet and Candlelit 2011 bridal collections, (see the full range here) but are also great for teaming up with other vintage dresses.

The Charleston Collection promises brides beautiful vintage inspired hair accessories designed and hand-made in England. Each unique piece is named after a song, dance or star from the Roaring Twenties, reflecting the excitement, freedom and ‘all that jazz’ reminiscent of that era.

The designer has joined forces with Paula Marsh from The Vintage Sparkle Company to create the vintage inspired collection exclusively for Madeline Isaac-James and the collection includes gorgeous combs, tiaras and headbands – all of which are hand-made in Paula’s studio in Hampshire.

Each piece is individually made to order and include Swarovski crystals and pearls in the design.

Each piece is also beautifully presented in a bespoke box with tissue and ribbon (also perfect as a keepsake box for brides). However if you want to get your hands on a piece of this gorgeous range we advise you get in there quickly. Each piece is individually made to order, with lead-time varying between 2-4 weeks dependant on the time of year.

Check out the gallery below for some of our favourite pieces. For more information and for the full range check out Madeline Isaac-James now.

Inspiration for a 60s style wedding

By Andrea Petrou on February 18th, 2010

As we said in our last post 60s wedding can be fun and you can be as wacky as you want when it comes to this theme from just having daisies on the tables to the full velvet attire, Beatles music and psychedelic patterns in the reception.

We’ve therefore decided to put together a gallery to give you some inspiration should you choose to go for a 60s themed day.

50s wedding dresses

By Andrea Petrou on February 16th, 2010

In our last post we told you how to get the perfect 50s themed wedding. However every bride knows that without the dress, the day won’t be as perfect as she imagined.

Unlike other eras 50s style wedding frocks are alot easier to come by thanks to their tea length timeless fashions.

We’ve therefore put together a gallery of the best ones to give you a few ideas.

How to have a 50s themed wedding

By Andrea Petrou on February 16th, 2010

Juke box.jpg

We’ve been giving you ideas of vintage themed weddings over the past week, and with so many eras to go until we reach the present day, we’re not going to stop just yet.

Yesterday it was 40s style weddings making today the 50s. We love this era for its cute tea dress fashions and think it’s a perfect theme for brides looking to have something that little bit different. We give you a list of things needed for that 50s themed wedding.

The bride
As we’ve already said, tea length dresses was the common fashion in the 50s, many of which were puffed out with netting to give that smarter look. There are many similar dresses available in this style and they can be found in prom or department stores, however, we’ll be putting together a gallery shortly to give you some ideas.
If you don’t want to go for traditional white, this style and theme will also let you get away with bright colours. Team up with gloves and Stilettos to complete the look.

Bridesmaids
Polka dots, pearls, and bows (think Grease) were all popular in the 50s so make sure you get your bridesmaids kitted out in these. Like you, they can wear a tea length dress to really pull the theme together.

The Groom
Many grooms in the 50s were lucky enough to get away with casual clothing such as suits made from grey flannel, with loafers, saddle or wingtip shoes. However why not make this look more modern by giving him a T-Birds theme? Incorporate this into the best mans and groomsmen clothing for that perfect 50s look.

The decoration
Forget the DJ and hire out a jukebox to really give a 50s feel. If you’re feeling brave enough you could also cover the venue in leather sofas and black and white photos to make it look like a 50s diner. Alcoholic milkshakes, hamburgers and French fries would also complete the theme.

How to have a 1940s themed wedding day

By Andrea Petrou on February 15th, 2010

1940s wedding.jpg

Last week we showed you how to have that perfect 20s themed wedding, alongside how to do your make-up for the big day. We also gave you some accessory ideas to help you get that perfect look. To continue the vintage theme, today we’ll be telling you how to plan a 40s style wedding complete with the dress, table decorations and grooms attire too. Early 1940s weddings were traditionally a day of “make do and mend” as rationing began to come into the equation, so use this as inspiration. Ask a great aunt or nan if they still have their frocks.

The 1940s dress
Because of the rationing in the early 40s many brides went for simple designs and borrowed dresses from their best friends. However in the later part of the era the style was a slender fit satin dress with a modest short V shape neckline covered with netting and Gibson sleeves, which is a narrow leg of mutton sleeve shape.
Again finding an original 1940s frock will be hard work by the Vintage Wedding Dress Company may be able to help you source one. If you are feeling brave you can also buy a pattern from eBay or SoVintage patterns.

Bridal accessories
Team up that 40s dress with full length gloves and a hat with a netted face veil. Finish it off with accessories such as seamed stockings and spiked healed shoes (make sure they are comfortable though.). Team up an outfit with pearls, which were the accessory du jour in the 40s.

Groom
If your man is in the army, or you just have a secret penchant for a man in uniform, then you’re in luck. Because of the war one of the trends of 1940s weddings was army uniforms, which, because of the rationing was one of the smartest sets of clothing many men owned. However if your groom refuses to walk down the aisle looking like an extra from Saving Private Ryan then another trend you can try is pin striped suits.

Bridesmaids and grooms men
Calf length and knee length dresses in bright colours were the norm for bridesmaids in the 40s as many had to wear their best dresses due to rationing. Check out Coast for 40s style prom dresses. Again, military or pinstripe suits were the norm for grooms men.

Decorations
Because of the war hobbies were limited, however a big part of the 40s was music with jazz being a huge influence. Add a 40s twist to a traditional tied cake with some musical cake toppers and fill tables with miniature models of saxophones or trombones. You should also make sure you include balloons in the wedding theme as these were a big must have in the 40s.

Diane Hassall launches vintage wedding shoes

By Andrea Petrou on February 12th, 2010

clip_image006.jpg
This week we’ve been focusing on twenties style weddings. And although we bought you a gallery of items that would come in handy, and some tips on how to apply flapper style make-up we didn’t get around to mentioning the shoes.

So we were really pleased when we spotted this new collection of vintage style shoes by Diane Hassall.

The new collection includes lace, bows and organza as well as little gems.
However the best bit about these vintage beauties is that brides can also have the date of the big day imprinted on the sole of their shoe, making each pair a unique memory of the day.

1920s wedding accessories, make-up and flowers

By Andrea Petrou on February 10th, 2010

Vintage weddings can be fun and exciting, and since we’ve told you how to have a perfect 1920s wedding we thought it only right to give you a gallery of make-up, flowers, accessories and some ideas for bridesmaids dresses.

We’ve left out the actual wedding dress itself as many of these are one offs and can only be bought off the rack from specific wedding dress shops such as The Vintage Wedding Company.

If you’re looking for that perfect 1920s wedding dress we suggest scouring second hand shops, vintage stores and even eBay. Alternatively take a design you like to a dress maker who can create the design for you.
