Wedding cakes by Bea’s of Bloomsbury

By Elisabeth on January 19th, 2012

I discovered Bea’s of Bloomsbury years ago on one of my walks around London. Always offering a great window display of sweet delights and impressive cakes, I often ensured my route de jour would take me past this little gem in Bloomsbury. Since then, Bea’s have opened two other branches in London, on King’s Road and in One New Exchange St Pauls, but for me it will always be Theobald’s Road that is the true Bea’s.

And as anyone who enjoys baking cakes, Bea also offers wedding cakes. Take a look at the gallery below to see some of the creations on offer in 2012.

Wedding Cake, Wedding Idea

Wedding idea: Cheese wedding cake

By Elisabeth on December 21st, 2011

If you haven’t got much of a sweet-tooth or just want to have something different for your wedding, then why not commission a wedding cake made out of your favourite cheeses? We all love a bit of cheese – and we’re not talking about music – which goes perfectly with wine.

There are several companies like The Cheese Shed who provide cheese for your cake fancy and The Wedding Cheese Cake Co. who have dedicated their days to create beautiful cheesetastic cakes made of the best Gouda, Brie or perhaps even a Stilton…

Cheese cake definitely has got a new meaning!

The Cheese Shed - Smeaton's Tower (from £147)

Smeaton's Tower is named after the famous red-and-white lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe. The lower tier is made up with Cornish Brie, then Harbourne Blue - a 'white' blue cheese, a Godminster Cheddar followed by Somerset Camembert and a Red Devil (a 'red Leicester' flavoured with chili and pepper), before being topped with a Gevrik goats' cheese from Cornwall.

Kim Kardashian plans wedding to trump Kate Middleton – and she’s copying Kate’s cake!

By Elisabeth on August 5th, 2011

Kim is planning a reality TV royalty wedding

As Kim Kardashian’s wedding to Kris Humphries draws closer details about their forthcoming nuptials are beginning to trickle into the public domain.

She must think of herself a princess as the latest news from Camp Kim reveals she’s planning a to have a wedding cake similar to that of Prince William and Kate Middleton had when they wed in London in April this year. No bonus points for originality then Kimmy.

The reality TV star is getting married to Kris on 20 August and it will be a lavish affair with a 10-tier white cake with chocolate chip icing and black-and-white decorations that the bride-to-be hopes will resemble the one Fiona Cairns designed for the royal wedding.

An insider told USmagazine.com: “Kim wants it to resemble Prince William and Duchess Kate’s!”

Kim who considers herself a bigger celebrity than Kate is reportedly planning the wedding of the century, which will be shown on TV in a two-hour special.

Kim hate to break the news to you but in all honesty we doubt Duchess Catherine knows who you are, let alone cares about what you’re doing for your wedding. You might have Vera Wang – whom we love – but Kate had a McQueen!

A Norwegian wedding – Happy Norwegian Constitution Day!

By Elisabeth on May 17th, 2011

As a born and raised Norwegian today on 17th May I am celebrating Norway’s National Day (along with many other expats around the globe I’m sure). As we’re not in Norway to take part in the festivities (it’s a day for waving flags, dressing like milk maids – check out the photos below – eating as much ice cream you want and show off that national pride) I though  I’d put together a little article on how you can inject some Norwegian into your wedding day.

A Norwegian wedding (bryllup) is usually like most Scandinavian things, a simple, elegant and lovely event. Starting off with the wedding dress, let’s take inspiration from Norway’s Crown Princess, Mette-Marit who tied the knot with Crown Prince Haakon Magnus in 2001. Since then the Norwegian Royal family has grown with Princess Ingrid Alexandra – who will one day be Queen – and Prince Sverre Magnus.

Photo: PA/Antony Jones

Mette-Marit wore an ecru-coloured silk crepe gown with a two-metre long train designed by Ove Harder Finseth and Anna Bratland, with a beautiful yet unusual bridal bouquet worn as a muff.  The bouquet, designed by Mette-Marit and Aina Nyberget Kleppe, was made up with rosary vine, Wanda orchids, and hydrangeas, roses in pink and mauve tones, fescue, beads and metal threads. The bride also wore a six-metre long veil of silk tulle fixed on the back of her head, while an antique diamond tiara adorned her head. If you can’t afford to commission a wedding dress, we quite like these romantic creations by Norwegian designer Cecilie Melli.

http://ceciliemelli.com

http://ceciliemelli.com

The Royal Wedding itself took place on a rainy day but as us Norwegians say: “Rain on your wedding day brings good luck.” It’s a nice saying and most Norwegians try to stay positive despite horrible weather. Perhaps it’s because the weather is very unstable and if you can’t look at the bright side you’re in trouble!

When I think of Norway and weddings, the old fairytales spring to mind: an event where nature takes centre stage – snow-capped mountains and fjords; old Stav churches – most modern brides settle for a more common wooden church; traditional national costumes; perhaps a troll or two; and fele music (that’s fiddle for non-Norwegian speakers).

Many grooms will choose to get married in a national folk costume called Bunad, which signifies where in the country you or your ancestors are from. Some brides will also opt for this over a white wedding dress, and you are bound to see one or more of the wedding guests to arrive in this colourful costume. Considering there are around 200 different types of bunads it can become quite a vibrant wedding – and gorgeous photos! Personally I have a blue Nordlandsbunad, which makes me look like a milk maid more than anything else. An outfit of celebration, bunads are also worn on Norway’s Constitution Day, and are adorned with silver and gold that dangle when you move, creating a melodic sound. According to Norwegian tradition bridesmaids wear similar costumes to the bride – but not identical! – to protect her from evil spirits.

For food we have many options. While some opt for a sit-down dinner a popular choice is koldtbord which is a selection of cold and warm nibbles with bread, fruit, prawns, salmon, and various types on meat, herring and whatever you may desire. Check out London’s Scandinavian Kitchen to source Norwegian and other Scandinavian food items.

Salmon for the koldtbord

For wedding cakes many will go with a traditional blotkake (a layered, cream filled sponge cake) – here’s the recipe for one I made earlier! – or a kransekake (an almond wreath cake) which is hard to touch yet soft and chewy – kind of like a macaroon. Some will serve the kransekake with cloudberry cream and decorate it with tiny Norwegian flags. Another name for the cake is Tower Cake, which makes me believe it dates back to the Viking days.

Blotkake decorated for 17th May

Kransekake

If you’re dreaming about getting married among Norwegian mountains and fjords, go to Bryllupslokaler.com which is the largest Norwegian wedding venue directory. Winter and summer are two VERY different seasons in Norway, so choose wisely when deciding on the time of your wedding; and most importantly have fun and be merry like the modern day Vikings are!!

The return of the Groom’s cake

By Elisabeth on May 13th, 2011

Prince William famously had a McVitie’s chocolate biscuit cake made for his wedding to Kate, now the Duchess of Cambridge, while Kate had more control over the slightly larger, more traditional fruitcake wedding cake. Wills’ cake was made from an old Royal Family recipe and we were happy to see him make sure it was present during his special day. Usually it’s the bride who gets final say in everything, including which cake to have.

“Groom’s cakes are something that has been popular in the US for many years but has only recently taken off over here. It is an excellent way to showcase the fun side of a couple, solve the dilemma of traditional vs. quirky wedding cakes and gives the groom an opportunity to have some control over the cake planning” says Beth, owner of Cakes by Beth.

Has your other half requested a groom’s cake for your wedding? We’d love to see photos!

The Royal Wedding cakes! [photos]

By Elisabeth on May 3rd, 2011

No wedding is complete without a wedding cake. And Kate and William’s royal bash certainly was not an exception; they even had two wedding cakes!

After the couple tied the knot in Westminster Abbey on Friday 29 April, the royal shindig back at Buckingham Palace – they apparently served canapés instead of having a sit-down dinner – the guests were treated to two wedding cakes: one traditional fruit cake and a chocolate biscuit cake.

Photo: John Stillwell/PA Wire

The magnificent eight-tiered fruit cake made by Fiona Cairns took centre stage at the Buckingham Palace reception. Covered in cream and white icing and decorated with up to 900 delicate sugar-paste flowers, the masterpiece took five weeks to make, the Daily Mail writes.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are big fans of Cairns’ fruit cakes, so they must have immediately know who they were going to ask to be official cake maker.

Royal bride Catherine, who is already showing the world she has her own visions, knew exactly what she wanted and provided Ms Cairns with detailed instructions of the blooms and foliage seen on the cake.

Guests were also treated to a McVities chocolate biscuit cake made from a Royal Family recipe that was specially requested by Prince William.

‘Let Them Eat Cake’ royal wedding cake exhibition, 22 – 25 April 2011

By Elisabeth on April 22nd, 2011

Kate and William’s wedding is just one week away, the royal baker has been confirmed and the world awaits to see what the dress will look like. But since our invitation to the royal wedding got lost in the post, we will unfortunately not be sampling the delicious wedding cake on the 29th.

Not to worry though, Tate & Lyle Sugars have dedicated a whole exhibition to the culinary art of wedding cakes, so that we all can get a fix of sugar before the big day!

‘Let Them Eat Cake’ offers members of the public a guide to a number of royal wedding cakes throughout history. Wander around the room at the summit of The Wellington Arch in London (just a stone throw from Buckingham Palace) and marvel at the edible artworks that copy the cakes for the likes of Henry VIII, Charles and Diana as well as a downscaled model of Queen Elizabeth 2nd’s wedding cake which stood 9ft high and weighed 500 pounds.

Tate & Lyle Sugars ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ is on at the Wellington Arch, Hyde Park Corner from 22-25 April, 10am – 5pm daily. Entrance is free. For more information see www.english-heritage.org.uk

Royal Wedding cake details revealed

By Elisabeth on March 30th, 2011

Kate Middleton will definitely have her cake and eat it too. In break with tradition, the royal bride-to-be has opted to have two wedding cakes at her wedding to Prince William on 29th April. According to Hellomagazine, Kate is sharing her sweetness and is having one multi-tiered fruit cake made by Leicestershire based baker Fiona Cairns, as well as a groom’s cake based on a childhood favourite of Prince William. What is his favourite you ask? Apparently it’s an unbaked chocolate biscuit creation made with McVitie’s according to a secret royal recipe.

Fruit cake is a traditional choice for British brides – and is said to be a favourite of the royal couple – and will contain a spot of Brandy for the enjoyment of the fortunate guests. The cake will be decorated with white frosting and the flowers of the four home nations.

Ms Cairns, 56, whose sweet treats are sold in Harrods, Selfridges and Waitrose, was contacted by William’s office in February and asked if she would make the couple’s wedding cake, which she agreed to do.

She added: “I couldn’t believe it, I’m very excited, very daunted and very privileged – a mixture of emotions.

“It’s multi-tiered, doesn’t have colour – it’s cream and white (icing) – and it’s a traditional cake but also quite delicate and modern, all the tiers will have a different theme.”

Kate is said to have been guiding the design of the cake from the beginning, which leads us to believe that she’ll be the same with her wedding dress.
