Wedding fun: The Newlywed’s Instruction Manual

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on November 18th, 2011

Don’t you wish everything in life came with a manual sometimes?

Well for those newlyweds out there, it does! I came across this fun little book* called The Newlywed’s Instruction Manual which sole purpose is to help you and your spouse navigate the ins and outs of those early years of marriage. Unless you’ve been married before chances are you won’t know how to deal with the in-laws, how to best write thank you cards, or how to even deal with the person who didn’t give you a present (so rude!)

Happy marriage!

*It also makes a really good wedding present for happy couples embarking on their new life journey together

Kate Moss receives surprise £200k wedding gift from Banksy

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on July 13th, 2011

We know Kate Moss spared no costs for her wedding to Jamie Hince the other week, but it turns out the supermodel has now been given a surprise wedding gift that money can’t buy (well almost at least).

While newlyweds Kate and Jamie are off celebrating their first days as man and wife on a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean, UK graffiti artist Banksy has been given access to Kate’s Highgate mansion to produce a one of a kind work for the fashion queen.

Artlyst reports that it is not known who has commissioned the artwork, nor given Banksy access to Kate’s pad, but sources say the graffiti artist has been painting a mural   in her bathroom and toilet that is valued at up to £200k.

Is this a artwork made in heaven?

What every bride and groom wants: mini-mes

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on July 12th, 2011

Mini-mes by My Mini You

If you’re struggling to think of the perfect gift for a wedding and you can’t face giving yet another serving bowl or cheese grater (depends on the brand!) here is a novel idea. Why not give them a miniature version of themselves?

Depending on the couple and their interior tastes it might end up on a box stored away in the cupboard, but for some it adds a fun feature to the house. Not to mention it’s a fun memento of their wedding.

Alternatively, My Mini You is a great way to add that personal touch to your wedding cake. Here is a figure of newly-weds Kate Moss and Jamie Hince (or is that Mr and Mrs Hince now?)

Kate’s wedding gift wishes shows her love for cigarettes and champagne

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on June 23rd, 2011

Photo: Yui Mok/PA Wire

Kate and William as we know wished for charity donations instead of wedding presents – they probably have enough cheese graters at the Palace already – and ended up with just over £1 million which will be spread across 26 charities. TV reality star Kim Kardashian on the other hand obviously thinks she should get some pretty sparkly things when she gets married to fiancé Kris and has set up an expensive gift list at luxury store Geary.

And what about Kate Moss? The supermodel – famed for her hard partying ways – sent guests her and fiancé Jamie Hince’s gift list this week, which includes items like 14 ashtrays which cost £240 each and crates of 2002 Louis Roederer Cristal champagne at £1,833 per pop.

Not sure why Kate would need 14 ashtrays, but guess she’s trying to accessorise every room of her house so that she never needs to look for one ever again. Kate is known for her love of smoking after all, and is rumoured to once have had her PA leave 100 cigarettes nearby at all times. The catwalk queen also likes to keep her fridge stocked with at least two bottle of champagne and two bottles of vodka in case she has unexpected guests. We’re not even going to argue there Kate, having some fizz on the chill at all times is just the way life should be.

The couple have registered with luxury London department store Liberty, Berry Bros & Rudd and antique store Talisman, and have also asked for a silk rug, cutlery, a mirror, a cocktail set, some tea strainers and a rabbit-shaped jelly mould – Kate loves to make her own jam!

Kim Kardashian’s expensive Gearys wedding gift list

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on June 16th, 2011

We’re actually really glad that we’re not going to Kim Kardashian’s wedding. If we were it would have been an expensive affair.

The date has been set (31 October) and the bride-to-be – who is marrying basketball star Kris Humphries – has set up her wedding gift list at Gearys of Beverly Hills, a luxury store which has been around for 75 years. The list includes a large collection of crystal items like an $840 ashtray (despite Kim being a non-smoker), a set of 24 champagne flutes at $130 each and a spoon for $1,250!

So what else does Gearys have?

Well you can get a Cherry Blossom vase for $6,700.00 or a resting mare for $4,845.00 from Daum, or perhaps this Nichelle garden box by Jay Strongwater for $1,450.00.

Gift the happy couple Swedish glass to cherish forever

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on June 3rd, 2011

When you find yourself invited to a wedding it can be difficult choosing what to get the happy couple.

Usually most modern couples will already have a china set, a kettle, even that trusty gravy boat that comes out only on special occasions and while most will have a wedding gift list wouldn’t it be great to gift them something different?

There has been a certain Scandinavian movement in food, fashion and interior of late, so why not let your wedding gift reflect this?

Luxury Swedish glassware specialist Orrefors has a host of stunning collections that evoke classic elegance and style. The beautiful designs reflect the purity and grace of glass, making the pieces an unforgettable wedding gift. We fell in love with the Champagne flutes, and the candle sticks and bowl are equally dazzling.

Perfect wedding gift: Vintage powder compact and jewellery case

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on May 24th, 2011

We recently mentioned our web find of the week – Perfectly Vintage – and the gorgeous vintage powder compacts available to buy. Having been given a heads up on yet another stunning 1960s black enamelled powder compact and jewellery case  by Kigu of London (it’s actually a cigarette case, but we’re not promoting smoking in any way shape or form so have re-named it and its use). There is not a more stylish way to store your cocktail rings and earrings on the dressing table than in this glamorous case.

Catherine of Perfectly Vintage found these two items together, and will be selling them as a pair as they are just simply to pretty to split up.

Keep an eye out for them once they go live on the website (sometime this week we hear) – we’re sure they’ll be snapped up within minutes!

UK couples opt for hard cash over traditional wedding gift list

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on April 12th, 2011

When it comes to wedding gifts new research from online bank first direct has found that 35% of forthcoming newlyweds will ask for money or vouchers as a gift for their wedding. The survey also found that a minuscule 3% would follow in Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s footsteps and ask for donations to charity to celebrate their nuptials.

We’re guessing that the latter number is not because Brits are non-charitable, more because we non-royals are not all blessed with the same luxury as the royal couple.

Also, because many get married at a later stage in life these days it is likely that they have already accumulated enough kitchen gadgets and gravy boats to last them a long time. So money or vouchers is simply the easiest option for those that don’t know what to ask for.

Surprisingly, 19% of those asked for nothing at all. Are you one of these?

On the other side of gift giving, the same survey found that 39% of people said they felt money was an impersonal gift while one third would prefer the couple to not know how much they spent on their gift. It’s the thought that counts after all right…

What do you think Bridalwave readers: is asking for money for your wedding gift a yay or a nay?

Prince William and Kate Middleton ask for charitable wedding gifts

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on March 17th, 2011

Forget about the toasters, gravy boats and candlesticks if you were planning on sending a present to the royal couple. Prince William and Catherine Middleton on Wednesday requested charitable gifts instead of wedding presents.

Not that the couple would need more traditional wedding gifts – we’re sure Buckingham Palace has that covered – but it is great to hear that the modern British royals have opted for a more benevolent approach as they pre-empt the flood of extravagant gifts that typically are gifted at royal weddings.

The statement by Clarence House said the couple is “touched by the goodwill shown them” and ”have set up a charitable gift fund for those who very generously may wish to donate to charity to help the couple celebrate their wedding.” A total of 26 charities have been personally chosen by Kate and William (see complete list below).

The 29th April wedding is set to reflect the state of Britain and perhaps the world – a time of economic uncertainty and philanthropic need – and the list includes charitable causes in the UK as well as some in Canada, Australia and New Zealand that reflect the couple’s close ties to and affection for the three countries.

The couple famously got engaged while on holiday in Kenya which is reflected in charities focusing on wildlife conservation in Africa and beyond.

If you would like to donate to the happy couple, you can do so through the official website www.royalweddingcharityfund.org.

The full list of charities that will benefit from the fund is as follows:

  • Peace Players
  • Ocean Youth Trust
  • Greenhouse Schools
  • Oily Cart
  • Dance United
  • IntoUniversity
  • Venture Trust
  • Beat Bullying
  • Keyfund
  • A National Voice
  • Association for Children’s Palliative Care (ACT)
  • Youth Access
  • Community Foundation in Wales
  • Community Foundation in Scotland
  • Community Foundation in Berkshire
  • Combat Stress
  • Cruse Bereavement Care for Children of Forces’ Families
  • Household Cavalry Benevolent Fund
  • Irish Guards Appeal
  • Army Widows Association
  • Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund
  • ZSL
  • EarthWatch
  • The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary
  • New Zealand Government’s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal
  • Royal Flying Doctor Service – Australia

Wedding gift list services with a difference

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on January 25th, 2011

Wedding Gift List Ideas

Wondering where to register your wedding gift list? According to statistics*, the high street department stores are still the most popular place to create a wedding gift list.

In 2010, John Lewis proved most popular with UK couples, taking an almost 50% share of those asked, followed by Debenhams and House of Fraser.

If you are after a wedding gift list with a bit of a difference, Bridalwave had a little scour and we’ve found these great websites that get our vote:

Bouf.com

Back in 2007, while browsing the stalls of Spitalfields Market in East London, Alex Griffin realised that thousands of designer-makers and distinctive brands were being squeezed out by high street retailers and their generic product lines. Alex established Bouf to connect consumers directly with suppliers of unique products, making it easy to buy products that really stand out. Today, choose from thousands of original items that will make friends & colleagues green with envy!

The Wedding Shop at Selfridges

The Wedding Shop has been helping couples create and manage their wedding lists for over eighteen years, making it the longest established independent wedding list provider in the market. It has its own showrooms in Chelsea & Fulham that have been established for many years. In 2006 the company was invited by Selfridges on Oxford Street to develop a new wedding list service in the store as Selfridges looked for a partner that could deliver the quality of service to which store aspires.

The Wedding List by notonthehighstreet.com

Hunting out the great and the original is second nature to founders Holly Tucker and Sophie Cornish, and it led them to have a sparkly idea back in 2006: to create a place where you could find all those charming, unique and carefully-made things that you sometimes stumble across in cool urban markets, village fairs and tucked-away boutiques. A place that was quick and easy to get to, where shopping was simple and fun, and where you could always find the most inspirational and wonderful things.

Bridal prefect badges for hen/stag parties

By Steph Powell on July 20th, 2009

6a00e54ecbc12e8833011571ad9920970b-800wi.jpgI don’t know about you, but at weddings I regularly have trouble trying to spot the bride.

No, I’m kidding, but if I did maybe I could get her to wear one of these.

Maybe though, these would be better for stag and hen nights, especially if you were spending it at one of those school disco clubs! They’d also make cute thank you gifts for your bridemaids/best man. Get them from Colloco for £3.91 each.

‘Do the dishes’ tea towel for a harmonious home

By Steph Powell on July 17th, 2009

Dishes.jpgWhen you’re looking forward to a life of domestic bliss I’m sure you won’t want to be thinking about mundane things like housework. But this tea towel (or dish cloth, whatever)’s message is quite clear don’t you think?

It would make a humourous wedding gift for your betrothed (especially if you give each other joke gifts to not add to the mounting costs of the big day – that’s what I plan on doing anyway), and at £9.95 it won’t break the bank. Happy drying!
