The Knot’s 2008 predictions

By admin on January 8th, 2008

TheKnot2008.JPG
The Knot are full of ideas for what will be hot and happening for the coming year of weddings. They’ve predicted that brides will be having two looks with quick changes between ceremonies and receptions and grey is the new chocolate brown when it comes to bridesmaid attire.

They’re also pipping white as a hot trend for the main colour theme with green and vintage both rising in the cool stakes. You can read all their predictions here.

Geek weddings: More couples choosing Star Trek over Vera Wang

By admin on January 7th, 2008

We’re not adverse to the odd ‘geek’ wedding over here, in fact, we positively relish something a bit unusual, but Cate over at our sister site Dollymix has found this fab montage of the couples who have embraced ‘geek weddings’ which seems to comprise Super Mario cakes, robots, zombie makeup and so much more. Take a look… [via Dollymix]

Online planning tool for brides with Muse Weddings

By admin on January 4th, 2008

Muse%20wedding.JPGWedding planning tools are abundant (just look at any wedding magazine) but this one from Muse Weddings is really versatile. Currently in beta testing, it offers brides a clutter free site to jot down all your inspirations, to-do lists, budgets and tasks to help you in the preparations. It is free too!

The site is pretty easy to use for entering and altering information and you don’t have to be techy in any way to understand it. New features are still being added and you can even duplicate your schedules and share them as Excel spreadsheets with other members of the party. The only noticeable drawback is it isn’t pretty to look at though the simplicity is sure to appeal to those who are fed up of looking at clipart wedding bells and the like. You can find Muse Weddings here.

Ladies, are you going to propose in 2008?

By admin on January 3rd, 2008

LeapYear.JPG
As 2008 is a Leap Year and features the four-yearly occurence of 29th February, now’s supposedly the time for all forthright ladies to be planning to propose to their beaus.Ok, we all know it’s a bit of rubbish but at least it’s a sweet tradition. It all dates back to 1288 when Scottish law officially sanctioned women proposing and if rejected they were able to claim anything from a kiss to £1 or a silk gown – just add inflation into that and think of the riches!

“While February 29th is traditionally the day when women can propose on a Leap Year, Valentine’s Day is also the time when the fellas get down on one knee – but we reckon the shoe will be on the other foot this year, as girls exercise their traditional Leap Year right to propose,” says Debenhams Wedding Insurance spokeswoman Diane Jackson. Debenham’s data already shows that vastly more women than men organise a wedding (61.8% in 2006, compared to 38.2% men and 62.9% women in 2007 with 37.1% men). So, could it be that women will now have to organise the engagement this year too? And will you be one of them?

Would you hire a toastmaster?

By admin on January 3rd, 2008

toastmaster.jpgAt the wedding I attended last weekend (I’ll stop going on about it soon, honest), we were greeted at the door of the reception venue by a smiling man in a red coat. He showed us up to the room, told us where to put our coats and pick up the champagne (important, that) and then hung around the room unobtrusively, chatting to people who approached him. We thought he came with the venue, but as it turned out, he was a toastmaster, hired separately.

I’d never come across this before, but I can see why it would be extremely useful. Later he acted as a master of ceremonies: calling us into dinner, introducing the speeches and announcing the cutting of the cake and the first dance. He was charming and funny and added a bit of structure to the reception (which can sometimes be a tad chaotic). Of course, it also takes the pressure of the bride and groom, who should get to relax and enjoy the reception too!

If you’re going to hire a toastmaster, you should make sure they’re a member of a professional organisation, such as the Guild of Professional Toastmasters or the Federation of Professional Toastmasters. There are, of course, female toastmasters available (although they’re called “Lady” Toastmasters) and toastmasters are happy to attend non-traditional weddings and civil ceremonies too.

If you’ve used one, let us know how you found the experience.

Not CONfetti – Wedding Fetti!

By admin on December 13th, 2007

gd_img.php.jpgNow, I have no idea how this works, but assuming that it does work, it sounds like it could make a great prop for your photos – or just a bit of fun on your wedding day. It’s called “Wedding Fetti“, and while the idea is much the same as traditional confetti, this stuff promises to remain in the air for five times longer than regular confetti, gently floating down to earth slowly, and giving your photographer enough time to capture you standing under it. It’s also easier for your guests to throw, as it comes tightly packed in a tube, with a quick flick all that’s needed to send it soaring into the air. It costs £2.50 per pack from Celebrations Plus.

See Yourself Slimmer

By admin on December 12th, 2007

slimmer2.jpgI know it’s a cliche, but it’s also a fact that the majority of women will want to lose at least a bit of weight before their big day. Some take the drastic step of buying a dress in a much small size. Others, like me, resort to prayer and control knickers. If you’re determined to shift a bit of lard, then I’ve found a service that just might provide the incentive (you know, if the whole wedding thing isn’t incentive enough) (and it often isn’t – I know someone who had to buy a second dress when she couldn’t fit into the first one with just a couple of weeks to go).

See Yourself Slimmer basically takes a photo of you and gives it the old celebrity airbrush treatment to show you what you could look like if you lay off the Pringles and Bailey’s (oh no, sorry, that’s me). Prices start at £14.99 and even if it doesn’t help you lose the weight, at least you’ll have a picture of yourself looking thin… it just won’t be your wedding picture.

Bling Bling Wedding Cameras from The Knot

By admin on December 11th, 2007

blingbling.jpgMost couples go for traditional white or ivory when picking the table cameras for their reception, but if you want to really push the boat out, these crystal covered disposable cameras from The Knot will add a touch of glamour to your tables, as well as providing a talking point for your guests. They’re $7.99 each, and it’s just a shame you can’t keep them!

Gadget E-Nups at PIXmania – non-enforceable prenups for the techno generation

By admin on December 6th, 2007

Pixmania.JPGHow much is your new phone worth to you? Do you reckon you’ll be arguing over that widescreen TV if you split? Gadget retailer Pixmania.com has been researching and suggests there is a new record number of divorces and splits over gadgets – enough to warrant a special pre-nup to protect your gadgetry. With couples owning more than £1043 of electricals and one in ten spending more than £1500 every year on gadgets, they’re aiming to offer couples emotional and financial protection.

“Together with the house and car, gadgets are the new battleground,” says Vanessa Lloyd Platt, leading matrimonial divorce lawyer from Lloyd Platt & Co. Solicitors. “English courts do not like deciding how people should divide their gadgets, but where they do, evidence of who bought the item or a document outlining who will get what, will be very strong evidence. I believe written agreements like the E-Nup will stop the increase in gadget wars once and for all.”

The Bride’s Register: for super-organised brides

By admin on December 5th, 2007

bride%27s-register.jpgYou may think this idea is a little over-the-top at first, but take my word for it: if you’re having even an average amount of wedding guests, you’ll soon find yourself going round in circles as you try to remember who’s replied to your invitations, who has special dietary requirements, and who bought which gifts. By the time the wedding day rolls around, you may well find yourself wishing you’d invested in a Wedding Register after all: it’s basically a little box file containing a checklist and a selection of pre-printed cards which will allow you to keep on top of your organisation. It’s $19.99, but the time and effort it saves you could prove to be invaluable.

Review: BBC2′s Arrange me a marriage

By admin on November 30th, 2007

aneela.JPGOnce upon a time, before you even got to the point of picking out a wedding dress, you actually had to find the right person to marry. In today’s high-pressure, time-poor society that is no easy feat. Many of my single friends ask me where all the good men are as if there is some hiding place where the nice ones are stashed, and I just don’t know. I suspect men might be wondering where all the good women are too. So what does a person do when s/he wants to settle down but doesn’t have the other half? Enter Asian marriage broker Aneela Rahman who in a new BBC2 series is applying Asian marriage brokering techniques to Western clients.

The idea is quite simple. Every woman has relatives and friends and each of these people know single men and other people who also know single men. For some of us that might sound like matchmaking hell, but if you’re on the look out for a potential mate and can’t find one, you may as well accept some help and let your friends and family choose one for you, or, at the very least, suggest a person.

Oprah’s “twenty questions to ask before getting married”

By admin on November 27th, 2007

oprahcom.jpgBeing practically a child bride, I didn’t ask so many questions before getting married (“Will you marry me?” was the only question I was interested in), but if you’re older and wiser than I was (and I really hope you are), check out Oprah Winfrey’s twenty questions.

From “Question #1: What percentage of our income are we prepared to spend to purchase and maintain our home on a monthly or annual basis?” and “Question #7: If one of us doesn’t want to work, under what circumstances, if any, would that be okay?” to “Question #11: Do we eat meals together? Which ones? Who is responsible for the food shopping? Who prepares the meals? Who cleans up afterward?” and “Question #15: Will we have children? If so, when? How many? How important is having children to each of us?” no stone will remain unturned.

You will probably no longer be speaking to each other either, but it’s best to know in advance, eh?

coountdown-clock.jpgJust got engaged? Already sick of trying to work out how many days you have left until the wedding? Well, you can put away the abacus and stop wishing for a wedding advent calendar – this countdown clock does the job for you, showing the “time remaining” until the big day, right down to the very second. When the wedding day finally arrives, the display will start flashing and will continue to do so for 24 hours. Of course, you won’t be there to see it, but by that point you won’t really care!
