Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding planning Las Vegas hen party

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on March 22nd, 2011

If the latest reports are anything to go by there might be some loud girls in Las Vegas soon as singer Sarah Harding is said to be planning her hen party in Sin City.

The pop star – who is engaged to DJ Tom Crane – wants to kiss single life goodbye with a celebration in the gambling capital of America and is planning “a raucous hen weekend in Las Vegas with a selection of her most loyal girlfriends. A full on girlie blow-out is the perfect way for Sarah to bow out of her partying days”, a source said.

Her husband-to-be on the other hand appears to be planning a traditional British country retreat for his friends and brother.

While the hen and stag parties seem to be under control, the couple are said to be in disagreement over the type of ceremony they want. While Tom favours a subtle English wedding, Sarah is keen on having the ceremony in a gothic castle.

Perhaps they could come to an agreement of Sarah wearing a gothic wedding dress while getting married outside in an English rose garden…

Wedding planning is more stressful than day job

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on March 21st, 2011

Do you sometimes feel stressed out in your day job and keep day dreaming of pursuing a career in wedding planning? Perhaps you should think again.

Research from BT – which is currently letting its Facebook fans help plan the wedding of Adam and Jane – reveals that nearly four in ten people (38%) think planning a wedding is more stressful than their day job. Of those asked 27% think it’s even more stressful than moving house.

Well brides-to-be, we’re certain you can vouch for this statistic. Planning a wedding can be pretty nerve-wracking. Just thinking about all the details that will make up your perfect day is enough to make any organisation fanatic break out in a sweat.

The research also reveals that the biggest worry for both men and women is to finalise the guest list and work out a seating plan. And, coming as no surprise, brides tend to be more concerned about losing weight ahead of the big day – wedding dresses can be so unforgiving…

If you fancy having a go at planning someone else’s wedding, why not vote for a few details concerning BT’s Adam and Jane’s forthcoming nuptials on www.facebook.com/btuk. Over 420,000 have cast their vote so far and are in for a chance to win the opportunity to play a wedding guest in the next instalment if the long running advert soap.

Excited about the Royal Wedding? Here are the iPhone and iPad apps!

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on March 17th, 2011

We’ve got the bunting ready, the tea is (nearly) brewed and we’re kitted out with everything needed to take you through the Royal Wedding on 29th April. OK so we haven’t decided on exactly where to camp to watch the wedding of the year – dare we say century?? – but most things are coming together nicely. We hope the situation is the same for the bride-to-be Catherine and her handsome Prince William.

Since the engagement was announced last year, we’ve been striving to provide you with all the details of the forthcoming Royal nuptials, from dress to procession route, to ensure you’re up to date on the who, what, where and when. But if you’re as excited as us, there is no such thing as too much information!

So here is a selection of free Royal Wedding iPhone and iPad apps to keep your hunger for wedding trivia satisfied until the happy couple say ‘I do’ next month.

The Royal Wedding 2011 for iPad by For Life Media (free)

This is produced by a Canadian developer and largely aimed at the Canadian and Us markets this is the digital magazine for Will and Kate’s big day. Among its features are a special feature about the couple’s unique love story – with proof they’re just like us (erm perhaps not exactly…) – and its effect on the British Monarchy, the rules of royal protocol, a fun shopping guide for official – and unofficial – souvenirs, as well as a live feed of photos and articles from the Press Association. Oh and there are tips on how to host the best Royal Wedding part ever as well as a chance to sign the “guest book”, and a‘connect with Facebook’ feature which allows you to connect with other royal watchers. Yep, they’ve even created a dedicated Facebook page. Think people across the pond love royalty even more than we do…

Hello! The Royal Wedding for iPhone/iPad by Hello! magazine (free – but for a limited period)

This “unique collectible” contains exclusive imagery and behind the scenes commentary about Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s forthcoming nuptials from the editorial team at the celeb mag. Divided into nine glossy sections, the app takes a closer look at things like the ring, the couple’s royal romance, their lives before they met, what the dress might look like and of course the ceremony as well as a look back at historic Windsor family weddings. Apparently the app will be updated with the best snaps from the wedding itself… In other words, there are lots of images and little text – just like Hello! in print. We’re not even going to mention the couple of sneaky adds thrown into the mix (oops!)

Royal Wedding by Neon Play (free)

This app contains all the background and history on William and Catherine, plus a gallery of 100+ exclusive photographs by royal photographer Ian Jones (you have to pay to get access to the gallery). Otherwise the app contains, like others, info about the wedding, the engagement, the dress as well as a family tree to see how William and Catherine are related (Related?! Apparently they are already related, from way back when in Elizabethan times).

The Royal Wedding Tea Towel by MD Media Consulting Ltd (free for a limited period)

Get ready for a multi-media, shopping experience. Now you can entertain or annoy people around you with Royal Wedding trumpet solos and organ music, as well as use the app as the source for official and unofficial news. The Tea Towel app also enables you to follow Facebook and Twitter coverage of the Royal Wedding, watch archive video – like the late Lady Diana’s wedding, shop for merchandise through Amazon in-app, get access wedding music through iTunes, download a selection of wallpapers, and, if you live in the UK, access live TV coverage! But where are the tea towels?

Have you downloaded any other Royal Wedding apps?

Wedding SIY: Be a princess without spending a royal fortune

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on March 15th, 2011

I dabbled with sewing, cross-stitching and knitting when I was younger, but once I realised my mother was far better at it I decided to not pursue this past-time – I’m now far better with chopsticks than knitting needles! But with the recent revival of these traditional hobbies, knitting clubs and craft shops popping up everywhere, I admit I’m tempted to make a second attempt at being crafty and make something myself. And seeing these stunning bridal creations by Harriet de Winton and Ros Marshall, creative editors of Cloth Magazine, I am even more eager to try to some SIY – Sew It Yourself.

There is a growing market for do-it-yourself alternative weddings, bespoke bridal wear, accessories and trimmings; buying wedding dresses in charity shop and alternating them yourself is a great way to personalise your big day even more!

In the Spring issue of Cloth magazine, Marshall and de Winton have created a wedding project, which hints at a royal theme, with designs that can create an individual look that is simple yet effortlessly glamorous.

From whimsical headpieces to festive table decorations and wedding dresses, there is something special about tailoring your wedding by sewing it yourself – and feel personally rewarded in the process.

And as Ros Marshall points out, “you don’t have to be a professional designer to get this look right, nor spend a royal fortune to implement it.”

Would love to see some of your own creations dear Bridalwave readers. Why not share them on our Facebook page?

Have an elegant wedding experience with Bulgari

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on March 8th, 2011

Don’t know about you, but I love the idea of going somewhere magical, quite remote and absolutely lavish for a wedding. Not that my current budget would allow it, but thought I’d share this ‘little’ gem from Bulgari with you.

Bulgari Hotel Bali

Over on the island of Bali, the Bulgari Hotels & Resort lies on top of a cliff making sure the backdrop for any wedding is simply spectacular! How romantic wouldn’t it be to exchange vows as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean in the background?

The Italian designer brand perhaps best known for its jewellery and luxury goods; LVMH Group recently acquired a 51% stake in the company; has like several other luxury brands branched out into the world of travel to ensure its fans can have a complete experience with them. The Bulgari catalogue also offers a hotel in Milan, restaurants in Tokyo and will be opening a hotel in London next year.

The Bulgari Resort Bali

If you’re lucky to have a budget that stretches as far as Bali and Bulgari, the resort offers four different wedding experiences: water, beach, bale or pavilion. Depending on what you’d choose, your nuptials could include a white sandy beach, 5,000 blossoms or stunning views of the ocean.

BT lets Facebook fans decide ad couple’s wedding

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on March 2nd, 2011

There is nothing we like more here at Bridalwave than planning weddings: the dress, the song, the car…

So we’re wondering if BT has been reading our stories, as the telecomms company is inviting Facebook fans to help their ad couple, Adam and Jane, plan their wedding on 23rd April 2011. The BT couple has been sharing their lives with UK TV viewers for a long time: from first meeting, moving in together, having a baby and to now planning what they call “the second most important wedding” this year.

By ‘liking’ the recently launched page, fans get to become a wedding planner for a short while and vote for one of three wedding dresses – traditional lace, ‘swan lake’ and 1930s vintage, the first song and the car – all of which will feature in the next BT ad.

If you change your mind, there’s nothing to worry about, you can vote more than once!

Once you’ve cast your vote, you can also enter into a prize draw to win a chance to attend Adam and Jane’s wedding – and make your TV debut!

We’ve cast our vote – will you?

Google launches wedding site

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on February 11th, 2011

Google is apparently the answer to everything. Just in time for Valentine’s Day the search engine has launched a new site that hopes to help happy couples with their wedding preparations. They must be expecting a lot of engagements to happen – as are we all Google!

The newly launched Google for Weddings will be able to assist in planning almost every aspect of the day, bar the cake tasting and band auditions (perhaps additional features to come??). The service will allow you to design your wedding site, share photos, manage your expenses and track invitations through elements that use Google Docs, Google Sites and Picnik.

Choose one of the 20 wedding templates – especially developed with guidance from a professional wedding planner! – and store your wedding plans in the clouds, so that you can access it whenever, wherever (internet connection required) and share it with your friends and family as you see fit.

Not quite sure you want to use it? Google is holding a wedding sweepstakes for engaged couples with a top prize of $25,000 and a chance to have wedding planner Michelle Rago with wedding planning.

More Britons Go Abroad To Get Married

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on February 4th, 2011

If you’re planning on getting married overseas this year you’re not alone.

According to new research by Mintel, almost 1/3 more UK couples chose to get married abroad in 2010 than 2005. Both cheaper overseas travel and a higher cost for getting married in Britain are contributing factors for the 27% rise. While Britons search for something different or better weather, getting married outside the boarders of Britain has its downsides: time and money spent on travel might not be welcomed by potential guests, so ensure that the ones that matter are happy to join you before booking the venue!

Where would you most like to get married then: an Italian castle that overlooks the rolling hills of Tuscany; a Vegas ceremony with you, your man and Elvis; or close to where you live?

Wedding Planning 101: The Budget

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on February 1st, 2011

The engagement photos have now been taken, you’ve got your wedding planner book close at hand – with the date etched in as the now looming deadline – and you’re ready to focus on the task ahead: actually planning your wedding. How exciting!

If you have a particular venue in mind it’s best to get this sorted as soon as possible, as some popular venues get booked up months, if not years in advance. If you haven’t decided where you and your love will say the “I do’s” don’t worry, we’ll focus on venues next week. But before you start planning centre pieces, Krug Champagne or doves to be let out as you depart the church, there is one thing that needs to be sorted: the budget.

You and your husband-to-be have to sit down and figure out exactly how much you both have to spend on your special day. No doubt, you’ll by now invested in a few bridal magazines and scoured the bridal websites and blogs for inspiration – ours included we hope! Perhaps your man will let you take care of all the little details and is happy as long as his suit isn’t pink, but remember that there are two people sharing what will be an amazing day, so make sure both are involved from day one (this way it will also be easier to share responsibilities at a later stage). And if you’re like me, you’re easily distracted by pretty things that eventually could end up costing you a fortune. So a budget – even if horribly tedious – is essential.

We suggest making a night of it. Buy in a few bottles of wine, have some nice food to nibble on and arm yourself with pen, paper and a calculator. Only when you know what you can spend, the quotes you collect will start making sense.

Your trusted friend, the wedding planner, will most likely have a budget template so that you can easily list all items you can think of that need to be taken into account. Otherwise, there are many free templates available online, which a quick Google search and printout will take care of.

What is your overall budget?

OK, now you can start looking at how this should be divided across the budget categories. We find it works to compartmentalise. First think of the bigger picture: bride, groom, outfits for your wedding party, venue and ceremony, food and drink, on the day expenses (e.g. photography and music), and honeymoon. These are now your budget categories. Now you can tackle each category at a time. Most likely you as the bride will have a bigger piece of the cake so to speak compared to your groom, as you’ll need a dress, new shoes, professional makeup and hair, perfume, jewellery, and a head piece (if this is your thing) just to name a few.

Think about your guest list

The size of your wedding party is a huge factor that will determine the costs. Are you thinking only close friends and family or a 200 plus party? Who will attend just the ceremony, just the reception or both? More invites equals more invitations, more gifts, more food and more drink. Aunts and uncles ok, but does Daisy from university really need an invitation if you haven’t seen or spoken to her for months even if you were inseparable at the time? The best way to tackle this would be to decide on an overall size: small, medium or large and stick to it. List the immediate family and friends that are a given, then allocate a number of friends each that you can invite (keep in mind that each might come with a plus one ) and stick to it. If not, your wedding will be super-sized before you know it.

Money, what money?

It is also wise to set up a separate bank account to use for all wedding related expenses and to pay any monetary wedding donations into. Also set up a standing order from both of your bank accounts that will add to the funds on a monthly basis.

Divide and conquer

Whatever your budget is, start writing down what you’re estimating to spend on each element. If you’re afraid of scribbling all over your beautiful wedding planner, use Post It notes and a big board or your wall, and make a big wedding chart. Not only will it add some fun into budgeting it could also make a nice feature for your wall.

It could take a lot of toing and froing to get to the right sum that fits with your budget – and most likely you’ll end up going over it either way *hush hush*. But also think about what means the most to you. Want to get married by a castle but it costs double as much as your local church? Consider what you can save on. If you’re not too bothered about your wedding dress being made especially for you as you’ll only wear it once, consider heading to a charity shop near you – you might find a perfect second-hand dress for a fragment of the price of a new one. Flowers look amazing, but as most will be cut off flowers they will dwindle a few days after the ceremony. Think about other things that can adorn your reception area and tables: candles, bowls of water with a sprinkle of flower petals or even items that hold a sentimental value. Did you and your groom spend time travelling at some stage in your relationship? Why not place items you gathered when travelling or photos as the centrepiece? The possibilities are endless!

Believe us; putting the budget together doesn’t have to be as dreary as it sounds – make it fun by being creative.

How are you getting on planning your wedding? We’d love to hear from you!

Wedding gift list services with a difference

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on January 25th, 2011

Wedding Gift List Ideas

Wondering where to register your wedding gift list? According to statistics*, the high street department stores are still the most popular place to create a wedding gift list.

In 2010, John Lewis proved most popular with UK couples, taking an almost 50% share of those asked, followed by Debenhams and House of Fraser.

If you are after a wedding gift list with a bit of a difference, Bridalwave had a little scour and we’ve found these great websites that get our vote:

Bouf.com

Back in 2007, while browsing the stalls of Spitalfields Market in East London, Alex Griffin realised that thousands of designer-makers and distinctive brands were being squeezed out by high street retailers and their generic product lines. Alex established Bouf to connect consumers directly with suppliers of unique products, making it easy to buy products that really stand out. Today, choose from thousands of original items that will make friends & colleagues green with envy!

The Wedding Shop at Selfridges

The Wedding Shop has been helping couples create and manage their wedding lists for over eighteen years, making it the longest established independent wedding list provider in the market. It has its own showrooms in Chelsea & Fulham that have been established for many years. In 2006 the company was invited by Selfridges on Oxford Street to develop a new wedding list service in the store as Selfridges looked for a partner that could deliver the quality of service to which store aspires.

The Wedding List by notonthehighstreet.com

Hunting out the great and the original is second nature to founders Holly Tucker and Sophie Cornish, and it led them to have a sparkly idea back in 2006: to create a place where you could find all those charming, unique and carefully-made things that you sometimes stumble across in cool urban markets, village fairs and tucked-away boutiques. A place that was quick and easy to get to, where shopping was simple and fun, and where you could always find the most inspirational and wonderful things.

Wedding planning 101: Setting the date

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on January 17th, 2011

Your Facebook status has been updated, you’ve sent out emails to tell everyone that you’re getting hitched, and you constantly find yourself gazing dreamily at that rock on your finger. You’re engaged! Now what?

It’s time to start thinking about how to stay organised in the months ahead so that planning your wedding goes as smoothly as possible.

First of all, get the official engagement photos out of the way. These can be used later on for personalised ‘save the date‘ cards. Then invest in a wedding planner. This will be your best friend in the months ahead, and will help you stay on top of every little detail. It should have a calendar (18-months to be on the safe side), lots of space for list making, pockets for storing clippings and ideas, and space to fill in the contact details of your chosen wedding suppliers. We came across this gorgeous planner and notebook from The Wedding of My Dreams – which will help you stay organised!

Now that you have a beautiful book to save all the ideas and decisions in, it’s time to set the date! It could be that you already know which date you’ll say “I, do”, but if you don’t know picking the perfect date is not always easy – there are 365 to choose from after all!

Even if an extra day off is tempting, getting married on public holiday weekends is best avoided (Bank holidays, Christmas, New Year’s etc). No doubt people will be thrilled to be part of your wedding, but be considerate and realistic – they might have other plans and costs for travel and hotels are usually higher around these dates.

You’ll be wise to avoid 29th April 2011 too, which is Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s wedding day. However, if you’ve just got engaged chances are you’re not planning on saying your vows in only 3 months time. Instead, invite your bridesmaids around for tea and scones and get inspired by what is set to be the wedding of the year (apart from yours of course!).

If you’re planning on tying the knot in London in 2012, you might want to do other things on 27th July through to 12th August when the Olympic Games are taking place. The city will be a nightmare to navigate through.

Want to get married on a memorable date? Then these are your best opportunities:

9/10/11 (Saturday)
11/11/11 (Friday)
10/11/12 (Thursday)
12/12/12/ (Wednesday)

Just keep in mind that all of the above are going to be popular dates, so best to book the venue sooner rather than later.

Once you’ve decided on the date, you might want to consider creating a wedding website. It is a fantastic way to let your guests take part in your journey and share wedding gift lists.

Which date will you be getting married on in 2011/2012? Share with other Bridalwave readers by using the comment box below.
