Amazon launch wedding service

By admin on March 16th, 2006

AmazonFrankly, Amazon’s new wedding service is such a good idea that we don’t know why somebody hadn’t thought of it before now. They’ve moved on from stocking mere books and DVD’s to some fantastic ranges of home and garden items (think Marco Pierre White cookware, iPods or Nigella Lawson latte mugs to name but a few) all ripe for the picking…or should that be mouse-clicking?!

The registration is simple. Browsing the items whilst you put your feet up is far preferable to bashing your way through the shopping centre on a weekend and all you have to do is click the wedding list button to add an item. Your guests can do a quick search for your list where ever they may be (ideal for overseas guests) and have them sent straight to you. Amazon will also provide a thank you list so you know exactly who you should send your pleasure-strewn handwritten notes to. Genius!

‘Green’ Confetti

By admin on March 15th, 2006

Bubbles_1It used to be traditional to throw rice or paper confetti at weddings. Pretty though it may look it isn’t that great for the environment, causes a lot of waste and clearing up. So how about some alternatives to stop that angry official shaking his fist as you scarper?

Two fun alternatives are having your guests blow bubbles at a city wedding. Or if it is in the country, throw handfuls of seeds into the air and a few months later, you’ll have created a gorgeous wildflower feature.

The pack on the left contains 24 champagne glass style bubbles, £7.99 from The Decent Things.

Wedding favours

By admin on March 10th, 2006

GingerbrideA novel way of seating your guests is to have cookie place settings. Not only do they serve a useful purpose but your guests get something cute to take away with them too. Less waste and more taste!

Fairytale Favours have a cute range of gingerbread brides and grooms (the classic ones are my favourite), heart and wedding bell shapes that can be iced with your guests names and presented with a personalised ribbon. They even have a range of mini wedding gingerbread packages to take away in place of the more traditional bonbonniere. Prices start from £1.75 per item.

12 Months to go – 5 starting points

Verawangweddingdress[Laura] In a perfect world you need 12 months to arrange a wedding. You can do it in less, of course, especially if you’re opting for a simple-but-quickie, but if you’ve got the whole kit and caboodle in mind, complete with 400-tiered cake and a whole new set of better looking relatives (to ensure the photos look right) it’s probably best to get cracking as soon as you can.

12 Months to go – 5 starting points

Tell all of your family
You may want to go ahead and tell all of your friends first but it’s probably best to start with the family. You’re friends will understand that they weren’t the first to know – you’re parents won’t. Families are surprisingly good at  bearing grudges, and a surly set of relatives could well mar your wedding  shots.

Don’t start picking bridesmaids and ushers
Try to avoid making decisions about bridesmaids and groomsmen in the initial period of excitement. I made this mistake and I had 6 bridesmaids and 4 groomsmen, which may have been lovely and all that, but wasn’t great for the budget. Besides, after 12 months you may find you no longer like Susan in accounts as much as you thought you did.

It’s over the border we go

By admin on March 1st, 2006

Gretnagreen Those days of teenage brides hightailing it with unsuitable fellas over the Scottish borders to get married have long gone. However there is still something strongly appealing about eloping to foreign climes and enjoying a co-ordinated wedding and honeymoon.

But what about good old Gretna Green? Well it’s still going strong and is still recognised as probably the most famous wedding venue in the world. Since the eighteenth century anyone over the age of 16 could marry there without parental consent, unlike in England.

As anyone could marry couples (until 1940 anyway) the task usually fell to the blacksmith. The lucky chap was usually the first person elopers came across and so ‘anvil weddings’ were forged.

Be warned though, the continued popularity of Gretna Green means you should book well in advance – and these days it’s the registrar who’ll perform the ceremony. Apply here

Gifts galore

Toaster

If you’re setting up a home as well as getting married, the gift registry is all your birthdays and Christmases come at once. One of the easiest sites we’ve come across is Wrap it Start off by signing up for a snail mailed handbook to guide you through (say you saw it here!) then unleash yourselves on the beautiful home wares for your kind guests to have delivered to you.

The choice isn’t overwhelming but by no means is it limited either with plenty for all tastes and pockets. The site gets top marks for easy navigation. For more cute toaster cards like the one on the left visit Toaster Greeting Cards
