Olympic star invites Facebook fans to wedding. Which celebrities do you wish would do the same?

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on November 1st, 2012

Weddings are normally just for family and friends – and the odd colleague that falls into either of the two before-mentioned categories. And as social media, especially Facebook, permeates our lives you might even have kept people up to date on your wedding plans on Facebook…

Malaysian badminton star Lee Chong Wei has taken it one step further. The Olympic silver medallist is offering his top 10 Facebook fans  invitations to his wedding. All you have to do is like his page and leave a comment on why you’d like to attend his nuptials. This smells of a publicity stunt… But we can’t also help to wonder if Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg missed a trick here when he married earlier this year? He could have upped his likes and engagement tenfold.

However, let’s say this catches on and celebrities start ‘inviting’ fans to their weddings: Which celebrities’ upcoming nuptials would you most like to attend? Leave us a comment below with your answer.

Wedding Tech: The way to StumbleUpon a proposal!

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on September 8th, 2011

Yay another innovative geeky proposal! I recently wrote about the Google engineer who sent his girlfriend on a romantic scavenger hunt around New York City using Google Maps and now this guy has used StumbleUpon.

Tyrel Hartman wanted to marry his girlfriend Marquita Arguello and was looking for a memorable way to propose. The couple who don’t own a TV often spend time together Stumbling through the internet to entertain themselves. So guess how surprised Marquita was when they stumbled upon a recommended website showing a photo of Tyrel holding up a series of posters that ended with one saying ‘Will you marry me? Aww am getting a Love Actually flashback.

StumbleUpon is based on your interest and will whizz you through the web to website that it thinks you’ll be interested in. So in order for Marquita to end up on Tyrel’s specially-made blog on this day had to involve some cooperation from the company itself.

As with a lot of proposals most of it will be rigged to fit perfectly. This is a very cute way of proposing, but I still favour the ‘I am so in love with you I need to ask you right now’ type of proposals.

Also – not doubting the couple’s love for each other – but the fact that Tyrel was able to choose pages like zombie weddings, a video of a dog saying ‘I love you’ and a graphic with the words ‘Say yes!’ to appear before Marquita landed on his page means that she’d been influenced subconsciously… Or am I just being unromantic…

And here’s the video capturing the whole StumbleUpon proposal

Geeky proposals: Google engineer proposes using Google Maps for romantic scavenger hunt

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on September 5th, 2011

If you follow my work you’ll know that I from time to time dip into the world of tech and geek culture for ShinyShiny – basically anything online/different/kitsch etc etc – so when I came across this story of what can only be described as a geeky, yet creative proposal I had to share.

Google engineer Ari Gilder sent his girlfriend Faigy on a scavenger hunt in New York City armed with a Nexus One and the Google Maps mobile app (we sense a plug here… but will go with it anyway) with the ultimate prize (if you are so inclined): a marriage proposal.

Writing on Google’s blog Ari wrote: “On the road to ‘The Big Question,’ I wanted Faigy to visit places around New York City that were filled with memories of our relationship. I used My Maps to plan out the route – from the Trader Joe’s we shop at on the Upper West Side, to Magnolia Bakery where we spent part of our first date, to Hudson Bar & Lounge where we enjoyed a night of dancing, to Carnegie Hall where Faigy once surprised me with tickets to a Beethoven concert, all the way to the lighthouse on Roosevelt Island where we went on our second date.”

At each location Faigy was handed a red rose by a friend, took a picture (see gallery) and checked in on Google Maps. Faigy would only get the next clue by putting a password in to a custom built app based on questions her friends asked her on the way. Clever eh! When she answered correctly she’d get the next location. This is what we call a well-planned and highly innovative wedding proposal. Note guys, no more hiding the ring in a champagne flute we want high tech adventures.

Guess you already know what Faigy answered to the last question…

Wedding tech: myPantone Wedding Styleboard app

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on May 18th, 2011

Putting together moodboards – or styleboards – is a favourite pastime of many, especially brides and grooms to-be as it’s important to keep those wedding ideas neatly organised.

If you’ve been pulling images from magazines and storing them in a box or gluing them onto a piece of cardboard and find this a bit time consuming, you’ll like this new iPad app from Pantone and The Dessy Group. The myPantone wedding styleboard app lets you build and share key wedding colours, outfits, wedding products and inspirational images as you plan your big day. You can choose 200 of the Pantone Wedding colours, thousands of preloaded images from invitations and flowers, to cakes and décor, or import your own images to create the perfect styleboard.  Colour co-ordination has never been so easy! OK the only downside is that you’ve got to own an iPad to enjoy this app, but then again that would be a great pre-wedding gift to yourself, wouldn’t it?

You can also let your friends and family – or the wedding planner! – take part in the wedding planning by sharing your creations by email, Facebook or Twitter.

Our advice is to head to designated viewing spots early – the first spectator has already set up camp outside Westminster Abbey! We’ve got the bunting ready, the tea is (nearly) brewed and we’re kitted out with everything needed to take you through the Royal Wedding on 29th April. OK so we haven’t decided on exactly where to camp to watch the wedding of the year – dare we say century?? – but most things are coming together nicely. We hope the situation is the same for the bride-to-be Catherine and her handsome Prince William.

Since the engagement was announced last year, we’ve been striving to provide you with all the details of the forthcoming Royal nuptials, from dress to procession route, to ensure you’re up to date on the who, what, where and when. But if you’re as excited as us, there is no such thing as too much information!

So here is a selection of free Royal Wedding iPhone and iPad apps to keep your hunger for wedding trivia satisfied until the happy couple say ‘I do’ next month.

The Royal Wedding 2011 for iPad by For Life Media (free)

This is produced by a Canadian developer and largely aimed at the Canadian and Us markets this is the digital magazine for Will and Kate’s big day. Among its features are a special feature about the couple’s unique love story – with proof they’re just like us (erm perhaps not exactly…) – and its effect on the British Monarchy, the rules of royal protocol, a fun shopping guide for official – and unofficial – souvenirs, as well as a live feed of photos and articles from the Press Association. Oh and there are tips on how to host the best Royal Wedding part ever as well as a chance to sign the “guest book”, and a‘connect with Facebook’ feature which allows you to connect with other royal watchers. Yep, they’ve even created a dedicated Facebook page. Think people across the pond love royalty even more than we do…

Hello! The Royal Wedding for iPhone/iPad by Hello! magazine (free – but for a limited period)

This “unique collectible” contains exclusive imagery and behind the scenes commentary about Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s forthcoming nuptials from the editorial team at the celeb mag. Divided into nine glossy sections, the app takes a closer look at things like the ring, the couple’s royal romance, their lives before they met, what the dress might look like and of course the ceremony as well as a look back at historic Windsor family weddings. Apparently the app will be updated with the best snaps from the wedding itself… In other words, there are lots of images and little text – just like Hello! in print. We’re not even going to mention the couple of sneaky adds thrown into the mix (oops!)

Royal Wedding by Neon Play (free)

This app contains all the background and history on William and Catherine, plus a gallery of 100+ exclusive photographs by royal photographer Ian Jones (you have to pay to get access to the gallery). Otherwise the app contains, like others, info about the wedding, the engagement, the dress as well as a family tree to see how William and Catherine are related (Related?! Apparently they are already related, from way back when in Elizabethan times).

The Royal Wedding Tea Towel by MD Media Consulting Ltd (free for a limited period)

Get ready for a multi-media, shopping experience. Now you can entertain or annoy people around you with Royal Wedding trumpet solos and organ music, as well as use the app as the source for official and unofficial news. The Tea Towel app also enables you to follow Facebook and Twitter coverage of the Royal Wedding, watch archive video – like the late Lady Diana’s wedding, shop for merchandise through Amazon in-app, get access wedding music through iTunes, download a selection of wallpapers, and, if you live in the UK, access live TV coverage! But where are the tea towels?

Have you downloaded any other Royal Wedding apps?
