Yay or Nay Wednesday: layered skirts

By admin on April 9th, 2008

YayNay9April.JPG
Whilst there is a lot going on with this dress, most of it is quite discreet such as the covered buttons running down one side from which pleats delicately span the bodice. The A-line skirt has a cut away detail with layers of tulle and beaded fabrics that add a certain opulence to the overall look without becoming a fairytale pastiche. Is it a yay or nay for you and why? I’ll reveal the designer next Wednesday, as per usual.

Last wek’s ruffle hemmed gown by Caroline Parkes didn’t prove too inspiring and got a nay.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: romantic summer style

By admin on April 2nd, 2008

YayNay2April.JPGSummer brides will no doubt already be searching for their dress and will this pretty, romantic style inspire you? The form fitting dress has a thick band of little ruffles at the hem for texture and a matching shrug to stave off the summer breeze. I think it’s a gentle look that anyone can wear. Will you give it a yay or nay though? Over to you…

Two weeks is a long, long time but you may recall our last yay or nay dress in ivory and rose tulle. Our voters liked it and it can be found at Benjamin Roberts in the Vintage collection (style 911).

Yay or Nay Wednesday – ivory and rose tulle

By admin on March 19th, 2008

YayNay19March.JPG
For a romantic style, I think this style is spot on. It’s got all the right elements – swathes of tulle, insterspersed with pretty pink embroidered roses on the bodice and a long train. What do you think to it and will you give it a yay or a nay?

Last week’s sashed dress was pretty from the front but we agreed it wasn’t really wrking from the back. Well, maybe as ‘a chair cover’, says Jo. The dress is ‘Aimee’ from Melanie Potro.

Yay or Nay Wednesday – sash and bow dress

By admin on March 12th, 2008

YayNay 12March.JPG
I’m sure this dress is wholly inoffensive. Not spectacular in my opinion but rather nice and traditional. I wonder what you’ll think of that apricot-shaded bow though with it’s flouncy tie and long trailing ends? The sash is interchangeble in style and colour so plenty of options to change it – would you and what to? Plus, a yay or nay?

Last week’s two tone taffeta dress garned a piffling two votes and both were a no. Style 1125 comes from Alfred Angelo.

Yay or Nay Wednesday – two tone taffeta and tulle gown

By admin on March 5th, 2008

YayNay5March.JPG
When you’re split between wearing a coloured dress and a plain white one, two tone is an obvious option but do you like the way this one has been done? The strapless bodice is plain red taffeta (there’s blue, pink, purple, sage and other shades) and the skirt is a tulle A-line with a matching coloured hem. Love it or hate it, vote on it in the comments.

Last week I asked you about a tiered assymetrical style and our grand total of two votes were split down the middle. I’ll do the tiebreak and give the ‘Maria’ dress from WTOO Brides a yay!

Yay or Nay Wednesday – tiered assymetrical dress

By admin on February 27th, 2008

YayNay27Feb.JPG
With so much going on with this dress, it veers close to being overly thought out. The strapless ruched bodice is standard fare but it’s overlaid with a crystal beaded sash and instead of a boring plain skirt, there are pretty assymetrical layers. I think it’s rather lovely but it’s your vote that counts – yay or nay and can you guess where it’s from?

Last week’s dress was an embroidered empire line style. Our voters really liked the beading detail and that the designer didn’t cross the line between unique and overdone. The dress comes from Nicole Miller.

Yay or Nay Wednesday – embroidered empire-line gown

By admin on February 20th, 2008

YayNay20Feb.JPG
Naturally what struck me about this dress is that band of embroidery that spans the dress under the ruched and folded bust. It stops the dress being too sheet like and too underdressed, instead providing it with an unbtrusive oomph. Do you like it – yay or nay and why?

Last week you loved that simple silk dress with several correct guesses – yes, it’s from JCrew and costs $225. You can also get it in espresso and black which would make great bridesmaid dresses.

Yay or Nay Wednesday – Simple silk dress

By admin on February 13th, 2008

YayNay13Feb.JPG
This is a dress for the ladies who are utterly bored of overly fussy numbers. With a nicely draping skirt, this silk dress has a shirred empire-line bust. Sure, it isn’t princessy but it’s classic and elegant and under $250 which makes it a bargain too. Yays or nays, please!

Last week’s burgandy corsage dress got a nay. No one needs butt flowers. End of!

Yay or Nay Wednesday – burgandy corsage dress

By admin on February 6th, 2008

YayNay6Feb.JPG
I think the problem I have with this dress is probably obvious to you too. It’s not the shape, the draped organza front is fairly delicate, the bodice also has draping and boning, again, ok. It’s that burgandy flower on the model’s, err, derriere. Looks like she sat on something bad. The good news is the flower is detachable, so, keep it or lose it? Yay or nay and why?

The puffball wedding dress from last week was an unusual one, wasn’t it? Your votes were split down the middle with Claire saying it looked like an Ian Stuart style – top points to you! You can find ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’ at Ian Stuart.

Yay or Nay Wednesday – short, puffball wedding dress

By admin on January 30th, 2008

YayNay30Jan.JPG
Short dresses are hugely popular but they don’t usually look quite like this with its assymetric draping, ruching and puffball skirt with a bow and tails sat on one side. You’d have to be either very confident or outstounding in the gene pool to pull it off. Could you? Would you want to? Yay or Nay and I’ll reveal the designer next week if you haven’t already guessed.

Last week’s gown had a jewelled pick-up detail on the skirt but you weren’t that impressed by the detailing or the model’s razor sharp clavicle. It scored 75% nay but if you loved it, you can find it at Cosmobella.

Yay or Nay Wednesday – jewelled pick-up skirt

By admin on January 23rd, 2008

YayNay23Jan.JPG
A lot of work has gone in to this style to make it a special dress for someone. There’s a ruched bodice with embroidery and a big skirt with pick-ups and jewelled detailing yet it doesn’t look particularly fussy possibly because it’s stayed quite form fitting. Love it or hate it, give it a vote with a yay or nay and why.

When I asked you about a satin sash dress last week, I hadn’t realised 80% of the vote would be a ‘nay’ with comments like ‘dull’ and ‘bland.’ Take note designers, our readers want more than just a pretty sash on their dream dress. You can find last week’s dress at Mori Lee.

Yay or Nay Wednesday – satin sash dress

I don’t know about you, but coloured accents like sashes are still working for me. What’s particularly handy with this style is you can view different coloured detailing on this dress via it’s website (I’ll reveal who it’s by next week). The sash and satin band on the bustline along with the satin strip in the train certainly liven up dresses like this white ballgown and the embroidery ensure that it isn’t a carbon copy of every other sashed dress out there. What do you think to the dress? Yay or Nay?

Last week’s floaty corsage gown was a nay and I quite agree, not sure many could get away with wearing it. Crystal suggests it’s loose look is a good way to start off a few rumours though. The dress is from Amsale.

Yay or Nay Wednesday – loose, corsage gown

By admin on January 9th, 2008

YayNay9Jan.JPG
Could you wear something this unstructured? I’m not sure I could. And before you ask it isn’t a maternity dress either. No, this unstructured gown is aimed at all of you. The corsage is bang on trend but it might be difficult to carry it off right under your chin and I think the coloured ribbon is a pretty touch, but the rest of it? Well, you decide. Yays or Nays at the ready!

Last week I asked you about a dress with a skirt of applique flowers and you said votes just tipped in its favour with you wishing for more appliqued designs. I’d tell you where you could find this one, but, being a bit dozy today I’ve deleted the link and can’t remember where it’s from. Oops!

Yay or Nay Wednesday – applique flowers

By admin on January 2nd, 2008

YayNay2Jan.JPG
If you’re looking for some extra texture in your dress, have you thought about trying an appliqued style? The skirt of this simple square necked dress is embroidered with dozens of fabric flowers to give it a whimsical appeal. Love it or hate it, yay or nay it!

We took a break from the Yay or Nay slot just before Christmas so there’s nothing to report back on this week. Let’s take a fresh look at the rules instead. I show you a dress every Wednesday, you give it a Yay or Nay in the comments section (which we’ve repaired to make voting easier – hurrah!) and tell me why. Next week the designer is revealed and you will all be suitably overjoyed or horrified. Easy!

Yay or Nay Wednesday – last week’s results

By admin on December 19th, 2007

YayNay19Dec.JPGWe’re taking a short break from Yay or Nay Wednesday over the Christmas break but come back in the new year for more gorgeous, unusual and different gowns for you to vote on every week not to mention leave your insightful comments.

Last week’s white trouser suit is £1500 from Johanna Hehir. The vote was split down the middle with comments ranging from ‘unfussy’ to ‘boring.’
