In our last post we told you how to get the perfect 50s themed wedding. However every bride knows that without the dress, the day won't be as perfect as she imagined.

Unlike other eras 50s style wedding frocks are alot easier to come by thanks to their tea length timeless fashions.

We've therefore put together a gallery of the best ones to give you a few ideas.

How to have a 50s themed wedding

Juke box.jpg

We've been giving you ideas of vintage themed weddings over the past week, and with so many eras to go until we reach the present day, we're not going to stop just yet.

Yesterday it was 40s style weddings making today the 50s. We love this era for its cute tea dress fashions and think it's a perfect theme for brides looking to have something that little bit different. We give you a list of things needed for that 50s themed wedding.

The bride
As we've already said, tea length dresses was the common fashion in the 50s, many of which were puffed out with netting to give that smarter look. There are many similar dresses available in this style and they can be found in prom or department stores, however, we'll be putting together a gallery shortly to give you some ideas.
If you don't want to go for traditional white, this style and theme will also let you get away with bright colours. Team up with gloves and Stilettos to complete the look.

Bridesmaids
Polka dots, pearls, and bows (think Grease) were all popular in the 50s so make sure you get your bridesmaids kitted out in these. Like you, they can wear a tea length dress to really pull the theme together.

The Groom
Many grooms in the 50s were lucky enough to get away with casual clothing such as suits made from grey flannel, with loafers, saddle or wingtip shoes. However why not make this look more modern by giving him a T-Birds theme? Incorporate this into the best mans and groomsmen clothing for that perfect 50s look.

The decoration
Forget the DJ and hire out a jukebox to really give a 50s feel. If you're feeling brave enough you could also cover the venue in leather sofas and black and white photos to make it look like a 50s diner. Alcoholic milkshakes, hamburgers and French fries would also complete the theme.

How to have a 1940s themed wedding day

1940s wedding.jpg

Last week we showed you how to have that perfect 20s themed wedding, alongside how to do your make-up for the big day. We also gave you some accessory ideas to help you get that perfect look. To continue the vintage theme, today we'll be telling you how to plan a 40s style wedding complete with the dress, table decorations and grooms attire too. Early 1940s weddings were traditionally a day of "make do and mend" as rationing began to come into the equation, so use this as inspiration. Ask a great aunt or nan if they still have their frocks.

The 1940s dress
Because of the rationing in the early 40s many brides went for simple designs and borrowed dresses from their best friends. However in the later part of the era the style was a slender fit satin dress with a modest short V shape neckline covered with netting and Gibson sleeves, which is a narrow leg of mutton sleeve shape.
Again finding an original 1940s frock will be hard work by the Vintage Wedding Dress Company may be able to help you source one. If you are feeling brave you can also buy a pattern from eBay or SoVintage patterns.

Bridal accessories
Team up that 40s dress with full length gloves and a hat with a netted face veil. Finish it off with accessories such as seamed stockings and spiked healed shoes (make sure they are comfortable though.). Team up an outfit with pearls, which were the accessory du jour in the 40s.

Groom
If your man is in the army, or you just have a secret penchant for a man in uniform, then you're in luck. Because of the war one of the trends of 1940s weddings was army uniforms, which, because of the rationing was one of the smartest sets of clothing many men owned. However if your groom refuses to walk down the aisle looking like an extra from Saving Private Ryan then another trend you can try is pin striped suits.

Bridesmaids and grooms men
Calf length and knee length dresses in bright colours were the norm for bridesmaids in the 40s as many had to wear their best dresses due to rationing. Check out Coast for 40s style prom dresses. Again, military or pinstripe suits were the norm for grooms men.

Decorations
Because of the war hobbies were limited, however a big part of the 40s was music with jazz being a huge influence. Add a 40s twist to a traditional tied cake with some musical cake toppers and fill tables with miniature models of saxophones or trombones. You should also make sure you include balloons in the wedding theme as these were a big must have in the 40s.

Diane Hassall launches vintage wedding shoes

This week we've been focusing on twenties style weddings. And although we bought you a gallery of items that would come in handy, and some tips on how to apply flapper style make-up we didn't get around to mentioning the shoes.

So we were really pleased when we spotted this new collection of vintage style shoes by Diane Hassall.

The new collection includes lace, bows and organza as well as little gems.
However the best bit about these vintage beauties is that brides can also have the date of the big day imprinted on the sole of their shoe, making each pair a unique memory of the day.

Vintage weddings can be fun and exciting, and since we've told you how to have a perfect 1920s wedding we thought it only right to give you a gallery of make-up, flowers, accessories and some ideas for bridesmaids dresses.

We've left out the actual wedding dress itself as many of these are one offs and can only be bought off the rack from specific wedding dress shops such as The Vintage Wedding Company.

If you're looking for that perfect 1920s wedding dress we suggest scouring second hand shops, vintage stores and even eBay. Alternatively take a design you like to a dress maker who can create the design for you.

Vintage dresses available off the rack

Vintage dresses have always been one of our favourite styles when it comes to wedding frocks.

Many brides will look long and hard to find an original one off dress, many of which add a touch of Victorian style to a wedding day.

The key thing about vintage is that it's unique and usual. However some bridalwear designers have woken up to the fact that brides-to-be don't have time to trawl second hand shops and vintage fairs and created a few dresses that can be bought off the rack.

We have a look at some of them.

Taupe lace vintage-style dress, £3,200, Claire Pettibone at Blackburn Bridal Couture.jpg

If you're a regular reader of Bridalwave you'll know how much we love vintage. So you can imagine how excited we were when we spotted this gorgeous frock by Clare Pettibone.

This dress screams vintage with it's lace fabric and straight style and we love the straps and bust shapes.

Head to Blackburn Bridal couture now.

Daily Frock.jpgSince we're on the subject of vintage wedding dresses, we couldn't resist sharing this lace lovely with you.

The frock by Monique Lhuillier at Browns Bride, has a lace bustier with diamante clad straps and a ribbon around the middle, to give brides a slimmer looking waist. This is complemented by a plain sating A-line skirt, which we think is a perfect match to the busy bodice.

In fact, we love this dress so much we've put it on the top of our wedding dress list. Quite a compliment when you have a list as long as ours.

state-of-grace-thumb.jpgIf you want to add some Hollywood glamour to your wedding day then head down to London's Home House on the 15th November.

State Of Grace, which specialises in Hollywood vintage glamour will be hosting its latest collection of beautiful wedding dresses, accessories and shoes.

There will also be a catwalk show and personal styling advice on hand as well as other exhibitors including florist Matthew Dickinson (yes we can't contain our excitement either) and wedding planner Dominique Douglas.

One lucky bride will also win two nights in the Royal Suite at Dar Jaguar, the luxury villa Lucia has set up as a guest house in Marrakech.

Get you tickets now online or call 0870 850 0350, see you there.

HAPPY BRIDE 2.jpgWe're a bit envious of brides to be up in the North of England today.

We've just heard that vintage-inspired bridal boutique, The White Closet, is due to open next month in Manchester.

The store, which is situated in the boho district of West Didsbury, is said to be aimed at "more arsty, creative brides-to-be, who are after something a little bit different."

It is also said to stock dresses from a range of eras including fifties-inspired dresses to slinky Art Deco frocks. And if this wasn't enough, we're even greener with envy to hear that the store will be creating its own vintage line next year.

Lucky brides also get vintage afternoon tea with cupcakes and Champagne at appointments, we know where we'll be travelling to when we need a wedding dress.

To book your appointment call 0161 445 5678.

Last week we gave you a list of companies who made eco friendly frocks for environmentally conscious brides.

And this week we thought we'd give you a gallery of some of the beautiful dresses these designers make.

However we also recommend you also contact these companies if you want something that little bit special as many will work with you to either recycle an old wedding dress or to create something you have in mind.

If you're looking for ethical jewellery for your bridesmaids or yourself then also check out our gallery over at ShinyStyle for some ideas.

Make your own authentic vintage wedding dress

Comments (2)

vintage pattern.JPGMany years ago, before off the rack and bridal designers, it was a tradition for brides to ask their mothers or a close female relative to make their wedding dress for them.

This of course has faded out as many women have full time work and are not dependent on sewing as they were in the Victorian era.

However, with many of us becoming more creative and more aware of the economic climate, it seems this trend is slowly trickling back in with companies offering patterns for wedding dresses.

I love this 1950s pattern from So vintage Patterns, which I think would make a gorgeous dress, and it's only $95.

Now this is an American company that ships to the UK, but remember the sizes are different over there so please double check them.

Because the patterns are vintage the company also checks each one for completeness, for the pattern pieces and the instruction sheet. In many cases the vintage patterns are uncut and factory folded. So you won't have to worry about missing parts.

If you're brave enough to do this please do send your pictures in. We would love to see them.

vin dress.jpgAs I've said before I love vintage, and bridal wear is no different.

So I was as pleased, am I'm sure you will be, to hear that this weekend the Vintage Wedding Dress Company is holding a trunk sale of vintage dresses at the Sanderson Hotel.

I highly recommend taking a trip down there if you're a bride looking for something special and original for your special day.

If you're not familiar with this company then let me tell you a little bit about it. It stocks vintage dresses from the Victorian era to the 1970s. They are all cleaned and restored to give you an old fashioned look, which you could team up with some old jewellery from an older relative to really complete the look and sort out your "something borrowed."

However, before I get ahead of myself I should point out that the sale is by appointment only. Call the company on 0207 242 4792 to make sure you get a place. The show is open from 10-5 tomorrow or you could try and squeeze in an appointment today before the show closes at 5.
